What’s Better on a Passport: 'Mother' and 'Father' or 'Parent 1' and 'Parent 2'?

As if another battleground was needed over the subject of gay parenting, now the fight has moved into the air. Well, not exactly the air, but the airport anyway.

Thanks to the work of gay-rights supporters, the face of your passport could soon be changing in a way that may strip a bit more of your gender identity.

The State Department has announced that the words “mother” and “father” on U.S. passport applications will now be replaced with the more gender-neutral terms “parent one” and “parent two.” The agency said the change is part of an improvement intended to give a more accurate description of “a child’s parents and in recognition of different types of families.”

While gay parents cheered the news, Christian conservative organizations were quick to pounce on the news and decry the changes.

"Only in the topsy-turvy world of left-wing political correctness could it be considered an 'improvement' for a birth-related document to provide less information about the circumstances of that birth," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council in a statement.

Perkins, a longtime foe of same-sex marriage, said the gender neutral terms were "designed to advance the causes of same-sex 'marriage' and homosexual parenting without statutory authority, and violates the spirit if not the letter of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)."

He was referring to the 1996 federal law that legally defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The new passport applications will be available online next month.

So, which do you prefer? Mom and dad or “parent one” and “parent two?”

The problem with Parent 1 and Parent 2 is it doesn't cover the Aunts, the Uncles, the cousins, the G'parents, and the best friend you had in college that should something happen to you, you chose to raise your children. These people are not 'parents', but they are the "legal guardians", and are the ones legally responsible for the child.

If this is so important on the visa's and passport's then it needs to be accurate/ If whoever is checking the passport asks you if you are the parent and you have to say no I'm the Aunt, I'm the foster mother, no I'm the Uncle... then why did you put your name on the mother or parent 1 block?

Legal guardians are what they are looking for, now most of the time legal guardians are the mom and dad, sometimes they are 2 moms or 2 dads, other times they can be any relative or non relative that is raising your child after you are gone or gave the child up.

The one thing they ALLLLLLLL have in common and fulfill what they want to know is "Legal Guardian"

I"M all for legal guardian being on the passport instead of 'parent' at all.

No. The application needs your legal parents. Not your biological parents. That's the point. Many people don't even know their biological parents.

Depends on if the couple is same sex or not I'd say. I'd also have to say that it should be to the preference of the the individual to whom the passport is being issued.

But what does it change? Nothing is changing. If the media hadn't made this into a fuss, no one would even notice if it said "parents names" rather then "mother's and father's names". Seriously, it's sad how whiney some people can be.

The destruction of our history, our freedoms and our Liberty is the goal for Progressives.
When will the rest of you understand that they WANT to destroy the Constitution of the United States as well as our country.
Nothing short of turning us into a Marxist nation will satisfy their hate for us.

You are right. I think it' because, (for me at least) I'm not adept at the ins and outs to this site.
