What point was Obama making when he said 'If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen' ?

President Barack Obama addressed supporters in Roanoke, Virginia on Saturday afternoon and took a shot at the business community. President Obama dismissed any credit business owners give themselves for their success:

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

Ok Mr. Obama, just exactly who was it that got up before sunrise to cook from scratch several varieties of soup each day. Who was it that hand crafted each and every specialty sandwich and salad? Who washed those dishes ran the cash register and mopped the floors? My little "mom and pop" was very successful and with the exception of my one employee who worked as a waitress from 8am to 2pm and my mom who handled the register through the lunch rush, I seem to have different ideas about small business than you do...

From what I've been able to find out, he has no record of attending any of the schools he claims to have attended. How he learned all of his tripe must have been from some of the earlier disgruntled rebellious nuts who have now moved from the FBI's wanted list into politics. Truthfully, I just don't understand how that coulld have happened without crooked politiicians in Washington and Chicago.

The trouble with Obama is that he is constantly on the move. Makes me wonder who's running the country. He and Michelle burn more jet fuel than any other president and first lady that I know of. Not to mentioin Pelosi's private jet to her home in California each weekend. They surely don't mind spending the money, whose money? Our money.

    Nothing, that's right,
Michelle's last job was to remove the poor from a city hospital to reduce their red ink. Nice mid 6 figure pay to send poor patients our of the hospital.
Obama's time is Chicago was spent funneling money to his pals Tony Rezco for the south side slums, setting up his pal Jackson Jr for a bought Senate seat, and getting his retainer out of fighting alongside ACORN and disrupting banks while suing them to make more bad loans.
I've never seen such absolutely outrageous spending from a POTUS and FLOTUS during the worst prolonged recession in our history.
Small businesses are closing at rapid rates, they're jobs gone forever while the gov't hires more IRS agents to control our healthcare.

Yes, 3 were mine. Our family grew over the years :) This is the that house, there's always a crowd, lol.
My last argument with the high school was the removal of the American flag from the lobby and replacing it with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Earth poster. The parents and the kids won, flag's back, the poster's in the english teachers class again.

I thought I'd get a break in college, but no, there are some indoctrinators in both of our schools. I make the kids bring me home all the stuff they get handed, and I read their books, not to mention the groups you can join on campus. I've only reported two professors so far for handing out political brochures in class. The glory of the Bolshevieks and Red Emma Goldstein tipped me off. lol
They are bold and even militant.

It keeps me in the academic loop.

Some of the people they have as teachers these days...I mean, really??!!
College, yeah, been thinking about that even though I'm not even pregnant yet. But I figure i I start Now, I'll have a good strategy set up to deal with the PolCorr crap, groups and indoctrination/assimilation things going on.
'Glory of the Bolsheviks'...that idiot you all should have burned, and not in-effigy, trying a stunt like that with minds entrusted to them?? Seriously UNcool..
That teacher is entitled to their thoughts, but NOT assimilationary tactics and using revisionist history PolCorr BS.

I think the best hope I've got for keeping my kids from eventually being subsumed by nonsensical crap like that, is to give them the best education I can about thinking and being true to themselves from the start. To look at Facts, and I'll teach them about PolCorr as well as how to deal with it.

Again, Kudos to you for keeping your kid's minds out of the swamps! :-D

It's great that you are thinking of the finances and responsibilities of parenthood before getting pregnant.
Planning for college is even more important today then ever before.

When the US govt took over the student loan programs they added some interesting requirements to the loan docs, like mandatory servitude.
My friends didn't believe me, I begged a close friend to ensure she read the docs before she signed, thank God she did.
The sad part is that she is a teacher and she did not know about the "summer of service" and so much more loan demands on her kid or all other American kids. Yes, mandatory servitude (the definition of slavery) to our government was passed in the 2009 Give Act, hr 1388, forcing our children to serve the government.

She took out a home equity loan instead.

    I agree!! Obviously enough. :-)
When we got married, the first thing hubby did was open an account with ING Direct, Savings, high interest as a plan for the future for kids. Since then we've moved it to Ally for better interest, same plan though.

Kids take $$, and Husband is a very Deliberate man, always looking ahead. When he told me about it during a convo about kids, I relaxed a LOT!! :-)

Money and such is set aside for pregnancy and all that goes with a child's first year. More $$ as material things tend to change quite a bit over time.
Yeah, the student loans situation in the states is...disturbing as hell on that point.
    Good for her!!
Slavery is just anathema to America. 'The Give Act'...luv that wording, all nice, fluffy-harmless.

It is great you are being a responsible adult. My sister planned her two children and saved for 8 years to afford to be a stay at home Mom for 5 years. She would get so angry when people would call her lucky. She'd say luck has nothing to do with it, while you were doing Vegas and Rio and buying a Caddy, I was saving to buy diapers and make my much cheaper than yours car payments.

I still remember her tears on her return to work 3 yrs ago, the 5 yrs of funds lasted 3.5 yrs and she didn't want to leave the kids.
Half her paycheck goes to child care.

Now if there were more responsible self reliant people, with self respect and a stronger work ethic, there would be more successful people. This is not what our POTUS wants, obviously since his destruction of Clinton's Workfare program that helped so many climb out of the welfare mentality to success. Most of those people were women, maybe that explains why women are realizing Obama's got to go.

I couldn't possibly agree with you more, and I applaud what your friend did--sorry it didn't last as long as she planned though.
I'm also very sorry you Americans got saddled with 'mr. nanny-state' in the Office. He needs a hardcore remdial education in what being American and America means.
Preferably at the claws of a LOT of angry Moms.
Kids are serious business, they're the future, one has to do the best one possibly can as a parent long before conception happens--that's our Job, right?
I've helped my friends set things up for themselves so they can have a financial cushion to assist in raising kids later on, maybe it'll catch on...
    Gov't = Useless.
Once again, it's up to us Moms and future Moms to clean up a mess.

That We the people created -

The roads and bridges that allow costermers and the goods you sell get to your businesses.

We created and maintain the courts and police that protect your assets.

The postal system that delivers your flyers and bills.

A public education system so your entry level employes can read and wright.

We protect the shiping lanes your import and export goods move on.

We have DEPT.s of weights and mesures so you and your customers don't get cheated.

The FDA so you don't kill your clients.
