An elementary school teacher in the state of Georgia, USA, has been jailed for 40 years for having sex with a 14-year-old student.

Shannon Alicia Schmieder, 39, was told she will have to serve 20 years - by far the toughest sentence ever handed out by a U.S. court to an educator accused of underage sex, Daily Mail reported Legal experts said the jail term was the same for manslaughter and other serious crimes.

The 39-year-old knew the boy since he was born and was at one stage like a mother-figure to him, according to his family.

His mother said: 'She was a close family friend. We had gone to the same church together for 10 years.

She dosnt deserve anything like that, no one was hurt and I bet the kid wasn't unhappy.

good sentence

39 year old female teacher rapes a 14 year old minor that sees her as a parental figure.
20 years jail seems reasonable for this.
the jail sentence should be until he is out of school (8 years) plus the rape sentence (10 years) plus distress to the family (2 years) = 20 years.

The sentence should be the same as for rape, but not less than a man's- as long as it meets that criteria I am ok with the sentence.

Our public servants from teachers to presidents should be held to the highest moral and ethical standards. Our future is in their hands and when they violate our trust they should pay dearly.

You send your kids to school to learn good morals and get a good education. She is old enough to know what's right and what's wrong. That is definitely wrong. That boy could be her son!

Bad sentence

I believe the sentence is excessive. Of course if we were talking about an adult male in these circumstances everyone would be screaming for the death penalty.
