The best American television sitcoms of all time are tried, tested, and true. We still enjoy watching them today, and they will likely be around for our grandchildren to watch. Here is a list of the ten best American television sitcoms of all time.
THE TEN BEST TELEVISION SITCOMS OF ALL TIME
1. The Honeymooners. Jackie Gleason, and Art Carney were a great twist on the old "fatty and skinny" routine. Watching Alice get the better of Ralph puts this one over the top.
2. The Andy Griffith Show. Watch this series from beginning to end. It changes from a depicting a goofy Andy Taylor, to a wise Andy, with Barney as the goofy sidekick. But even after the departure of Don Knotts it's still great viewing.
3. I Love Lucy. The funniest sitcom ever according to legions of viewers. No sitcom has ever packed more laughs per line than Lucy.
4. The Beverly Hillbillies. This show was panned by critics when it first came out, but it's one that has stood the test of time. Rent the old movie The Southerner to see an early version of Granny Clampett's character.
5. Happy Days. If you were around in the 1970's this one has to be on your list. We still love the Fonz.
6. M.A.S.H. Turning the subject of war into a situation comedy took real creativity, and this show changed forever how sitcoms were created, and the subjects with which they were permitted to deal.
7. All in the Family. A seminal sitcom. A strong cast and great scripts challenged viewers, and episodes became the focal points of lively debates.
8. Married... With Children. The Bundy family values shocked early viewers. This Fox offering changed the way we think about winning and losing in America, mostly losing....
9. Third Rock From the Sun. No show had more original material than Third Rock. Brilliant performances by the cast members has meant this will live on for a long time in syndication.
10. Seinfeld. This is the easily the strongest sitcom to come along in the 1990's, and may be the greatest American sitcom ever. Only time will tell, but it's likely that Seinfeld will be watched for many years to come, and be regarded as a milestone in American sitcom history.
I've left out a lot of fine sitcoms, like the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and animated series, such as The Simpsons. Compiling this list of the best American television sitcoms of all time convinced me that there has been no shortage of humorous fare in American television, and that American sitcoms are arguably the best in the world
