Thoughtful and provoking? No, because I'm way too testy after reading said article. I am so sick to death of everyone hollering over the salary teachers are given and that we all should cough up more dough to get the best. And most districts have the last in-first out bit going so we keep those that need to go and good ones aren't able to get in and stay. And all the while we seem to be completely dumbing down our students. IF IT IS PUBLIC INFO, ABOUT ANYTHING, I HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW IT, period, end of discussion.

That being said not all questions or answers are thought provoking or thoughtful, including some of my own. lol

Wisconsin isn't the only state with said problem/s. In a sense we have the same problem in Ohio.

There was a time when unions were definitely needed. Unfortunately unions have grown into some kind of monster devouring all before them with their continuing demands.

Schools are not big, profit making corporations or manufacturers. Schools are non-profit funded by the taxpayer. Mores demands by the unions mean more property taxes, etc. created by levies. If said levies are voted down, cuts are made, not to teachers salaries or benefits, but to school curriculum, busing, etc.

Teachers positions should be based on performance, not longevity. Should also be no tenure.

Everyone should know were thier tax dollars are spent and if the Teachers feel offended that's to bad. There is nothing wrong with public information being public. I do think in general teachers are under paid but their pay should be based on performance not how long they have been able to hold onto their job.
By testing the teachers and students on the basics we could see which teachers are doing well and which ones are not. This would also give them less tome to do political indoctrination as their jobs and pay raises would be riding on their ability to teach the basics, therefore changing their focus.

If you are a member of a Wisconsin teachers union making this information public is very wrong.
People might start stringing random facts together in to a cohesive thought that would be very embarrassing.
The schools are underfunded(so they claim).
75% of funding goes to unionized work force.
Increased funding would go to higher pay and benefits for the union workers.
How does paying the same people even more money create better results?
Are those same people withholding their full services now while waiting for more money to unleash their talents?
Or are they planning to replace the under performing members with higher caliber teachers(safe to say that IS NOT the union plan).
Increased funding holds no promise of better results.

This kind of thought pattern could lead to more tough questions,

Why are we paying for ever expanding head start programs that show no benefits in practice?
Why could older Americans attend classes with 30-35 students and have better results than classes today with 18-25 students?
Why do older Americans do so much better on knowledge test after being out of the classroom for 40-50 years than ones who have just left the public school systems?

No, public information can do no good, and in fact do great harm if made available to the public.

Good article. People moan about education and do not understand that teachers, for the most part, are well paid with excellent benefits - the huge amounts of money poured into education make for good, mediocre and bad teachers getting higher salaries and huge benefits while the children receive poorer and poorer educations.

The union teachers in Janesville are proof that they care for nothing other than themselves and damn the children now in larger classes with people losing their jobs so they alone can get more and more unearned money and benefits. It really is sickening.

They don't want people knowing how much they make because they probably aren't earning that much. The unions really wouldn't be pleased if it showed what they got.
I think they need performance based pay. If you are succeeding at educating you make good money, if you are mediocre you make less, if you are poor, you are gone. We have some here that aren't much more intelligent than the kids, but they are protected by unions.
They don't like informed parents or voters they are a danger to the agenda and they really like teaching the agenda of the government.

There's not a thing wrong with it. In my state, the salaries of teachers are listed online for everyone to see. I checked them out at the beginning of this school year, particularly my son's. I was pretty surprised to find that his teacher was earning less - noticeably less - than every other teacher. I find that discouraging, especially after seeing her devotion to the kids. And boy do they adore her.

Today was his last day. He wanted to do something special for her - so we got her a card and a small gift to show our appreciation. She was really surprised, even a little teary eyed - and she mentioned how great it made her feel to see that she was effective in making their year fun so they would be excited to come back. Little did we know, she left a gift for the parents as well. Apparently she's just been snapping pictures of the kids all year during class. She sent packs of the best ones home with all the children today.

I wish there were more teachers like her, our schools would be a much better place for our kids. He was so lucky to have such a great teacher - and as his very first teacher. I hate to think most kids lack that - and so do most teachers.
