Horrible. Thank goodness I had great teachers who cared alot about their students, and giving them a great education, but most all, my mother who stay on her kids in getting a good education.
I don't think I've learned anything that has stuck/ will actually be of use in the real world since 7th grade(I took Algebra 1 in 8th grade and the first year of algebra is generally a freshman class)
There is no place in education for unions. This country has proven the fact that teachers unions and actually teaching do not go hand in hand and do not give us good results. It's all about the teachers and not the students.
it needs rennovated. first off, it needs limitied attachments to the federal government, to prevent liberal indoctrination, and second, it needs state funding.
It has nothing to do with Liberal/Conservative or Democrat/Republican. As a High School student myself, I've had many substantive discussions with a lot of people on what we view as the reason for failing schools. I've essentially come down to 2 essential ideas.
1) Kids aren't motivated. They're scorning learning, becoming apathetic, being more receptive to pop. culture than their futures. We need to ask ourselves whether schools are failing kids or whether KIDS are failing SCHOOLS. Many of our teachers are trained and competent, but the thing is that they don't know how connect with kids who don't want to learn
2) Vocational schools are not as big as they should be. If a kid can't do calculus but knows how to take apart and put back together a car engine, shouldn't he have training schools to ensure he or she can become a mechanic? The "College for everyone" championed by the Liberals is a lie and it is putting kids down the wrong path and dooming them to career failure. But Conservatives need to realize that vocational schools need to be funded by federal dollars to actually put up educational infrastructure.
We do fund vocational schools. I agree with you in part. My job was to work with kids that wanted to learn about mechanics, welding, nursing aids etc. What you may not realize is the fact that we throw money at the problem of education and that money goes into the pockets of the administrators and benefits for the teachers. It seldom creates in depth education for the students. You seem aware and might want to study this issue. The school I worked in received a huge grant and the superintendent got a huge raise, nothing changed for the benefit of the students but his salary skyrocketed.
Can't disagree with that. I think the problem is that when places legitimately need funding, any attempts to fund it go awry. Vocational schools are not as prevalent across the nation as they need to be.
I also think its a travesty that administrators get paid a whole lot while teachers are struggling to make ends meet.
I believe teachers should make a decent salary, however, do some math. Look at the number of days they actually work, the benefits they receive and the how our young are doing world wide. For the most part, teachers work as part time workers when you consider summers off, spring break, all holidays off, Christmas break and very short hours. I worked from 8 a.m until 3 p.m. and had at least four months off a year.
A Dysfunctional System that is based in the 17th Century and union controlled costing 150% more than it should plus their millionaire pension plans but most importantly destroying the future of the children and the competitiveness of the US...it is nothing but the modern day political patronage organization...massively bloated and unskilled...
It needs improvement. Teachers unions make it very difficult for the students' education at times. Luckily, I live in NJ, and Christie is doing a great deal to improve education for students by taking down teachers unions.
One of my first jobs was in a high school. I loved working with the kids. After getting to know the "system" it was apparent that a majority of the teachers, principals and staff were not the caring the individuals I hoped to surround myself with. There are some great teachers, but they are in the minority. Most just show up and do what they have to do to collect their paychecks and benefits. I have never been around so many synical people. Parents should also be more involved and push for the teachers to be qualified to teach. I have four kids, three are in great schools, but I am there every day at 3 0'clock to make sure my kids behaved and have done what they were supposed to do. If parents create a relationship with the teachers, it makes a huge difference and can become a partnership to help your child succeed. I know I'm a pain to some of the liberal teachers, but these are my kids, not theirs to brainwash.

The system is fine... many of the teachers and faculty are fine... HOWEVER I do believe the people in charge are paid to slowly collapse it. Now that America is invested in sickness and has exported its legitimate industries we no longer need smart citizens we need functioning sick people. Smart citizens challenge for power... sick stupids are a crop to be farmed and corralled.
The public system has served its purpose to give business a labor force that can read and follow simple direction. It is no longer useful because the labor force needs to be more educated than what the system was designed to produce. Anyone serious about educating their child for today's opportunities cannot consider public education as an option.
I think that the education in America is not globalized. The education supplied is only confined to their own country. Unlike most of the world, their education is not very professional. Instead of considering the crisis of bankruptcy and other issues. They pay attention to the superficial aspects like which celebrity looks hot, et cetra. Which reflects on the kind of education they get.
You are describing the reported culture, the public education system fails because it is not allowed to adapt. It is mired in useless tradition and weighted with bloated union/government power.
