What do you fear more, a temporary government shut down of non-essential services or the United States going bankrupt?

I didn't care much for either choice, but had to vote for one. We are already bankrupt, actually. I'd like to see a permanent shut-down of all "non-essential" government services. I'm betting my idea of "non-essential government services" would be different from theirs. For example, I'd eliminate the NATIONAL Board of Education, and the EPA, among others, and I'd make the energy companies comply with the "Clean Water Act". I could go on and on.

A shut down won't be as bad as the Washington politicians want us to believe, all they care about are their jobs, not us. If it does shut down there should be no pay for the Senate or Congress.

it's such a simple choice. Massive cuts now or passing the buck and going bankrupt later.
Pain for the few or pain for us all

    Hi CIC,

I hope I don't sound crazy, but I think a government shutdown might be a good thing. With $1.6 trillion annual deficits, $15 trillion of official debt, and $90 trillion of off balance sheet debt, the best anyone is offfering is $60 billion in cuts. There is no talk of sufficient spending cuts and tax base increases to generate surpluses to pay off the official debt, and no talk of entitlement reform that would allow abrogation of off balance sheet debt we can never pay without debauching our currency. As drastic as it sounds, a government shutdown might be the shock therapy Congress needs to take the hard fiscal steps required to solve the problem before it becomes so big we can never solve it.

    I agree...

Not only would a government shutdown save money, but after 2-3 months, the American People would realize how little they miss the federal government as well as how much better off they are without the federal government intruding into every single aspect of their lives.

That's pretty one sided if you ask me. That's like asking someone if they want to die now or live an extra day. I think I would like to live an extra day. It would give me an opportunity to escape. When are we going to put a CPA in the White House for once instead of crooked lawyers and failed CEO's?

When the US goes bankrupt we will have a partual shutdown, immediate layoffs, government mandated cuts in all services. The essential serives like Obama care if it remains would become bare bones essentials only.

Our Almighty Dollar,so to speak , is on a path to crash land. Shut totally non value aded essential services down until January 1st 2012. This is easily justified by looking at the state of our nation.

If we shut down the gov't. we will find out just how many services and people we can do without and then we will know where to cut the budget and which departments can be closed permanently.

If government services are shut down, it doesn't include essential services like the left would like you to think! They always threaten that, but that would not happen! Do you really think they would forego getting their paychecks! No, the armed forces will still be there and ready, as well as firemen and police! The unnecessary things like park services and sovernier shops and and all the little mimioms thaey have added which essentially have no purpose other then to suck us dry! In fact, the shutdown just might reveal how very little we need from government!!!

    BRING IT ON!!!!!

shut the government down for 3 months...it will save billions, and the American People will realize how little they need the federal government in their lives. In fact, the American Peopole will find out how much better they are without the Central Planners interfering in the lives.
