Little Angel 2012/07/12 14:09:48
Make lots of noise...
Leave the garbage out or leave food...
Chase the bear away....
Observe the bear from a distance...
Try to make a family pet of the bear....

We have a lot of bears in Colorado and they have been coming into
the populated areas looking for food. There were a few cars that were
destroyed on the inside by a bear and then the bear started going
into garages searching through the trash for food. One family left
a stereo on all night and the bear stopped coming around. The
music ....Country Music. Guess that would scare the bears.

One family started leaving food out for the bear and of course he
became a real problem. So the Forest Rangers had to sedate
him but then they put him down. Now they are looking for another
bear in the same area.

What should you do if a bear is in your area?

act immediately to scare it away: make as much noise as possible by yelling very loudly If you are with other people, stand together to present a more intimidating figure, but do not surround the bear.

Bears must be turned back to their natural environment.
They should not be fed, and garbage containers must be secured.
There is no sense in killing bears. Why don't the rangers bring them back to the wild?
Are all these documentations informing about bringing bears successfully back to nature a lie?
Making noise to keep bears away might also be useful.

........... the only bears that I have ever seen had a high fence between me and them, but if I encountered such a bear, I'd be moving fast in the opposite direction, and then phone the local authorities..........

I've never had a bear in my area. If I saw a bear in the area I now live in, I would be concerned for the bear; NOT a safe place for a bear. The Florida black bear is having a difficult time surviving, in this very human populated state. I know the things you should, or shouldn't do. I would call the guy at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, that I talked to at length once, to let him that another bear was far from where he/she is safe. He genuinely seems to care about them.

Either call the Forest Service to deal with it, or turn it into bear-meat.

Stay inside and call the police. You don't mess with bears. The police can contact animal control a lot quicker
Those bears in your yard aren't Yogi. Leaving food out is just stupid because eventually the bear will turn on you and try to eat you too.

I live out in the country and there is a lot of space for them. They really don't come around much. Sometimes they visit our yard, but they don't really do anything. We just keep an eye on them. If they meant us harm my dad could just shoot it with his shotgun. I don't really feel threatened by them. The most they ever do is rip the garbage apart every so often.

    Random Note:
This question reminded me of a dream I had about bears. I was living in town and there was a bear going around killing people. It came to my house. The bear clawed its way through the door. It then tried to kill my family and I. Very heart-racing to have a bear trying to kill you in a dream. The bear was cute except for the fact that it had blood stained all over it fur. Lol.

You should always watch wild animals from a distance and appreciate them. If
a bear starts to come near you, make lots of noise and it will leave. Never
chase or run from a bear, they most likely are just as scared of you as you
are of them. They only leave their natural habitat when hungry and can't
find food so never leave food or garbage outside where they can get it.
trying to make a pet of a wild bear or any other wild animal is very
    dangerous.

They are looking for food, so I wouldn't leave anything edible accessible. I'd leave music on in my house to make it appear occupied.

Yeah, I finally made it up there...it's beautiful...but, I wasn't up there that long only about a day and a half...the cottage was real nice too...I'm going to make it up there again sometime soon hopefully...where are you at again...I seem to recall this came up when we were talking about towns with funny names and someone mentioned "Accident"...but, maybe that was another thread.

How have you been by the way?...I just started to frequent this place maybe three weeks ago...but I'm only on a few hours at night mostly and this is the first I've seen of you.

Move closer to the city? Bear proof your car and home and leave NO food or traces of food where the bear can get to? Have a motion detector bright light and or noise alarm?

I don't know, we only get birds and squirrels here. Lots of birds. The geese are a bit annoying sometimes (can't they fly over the freaking road? Does Canada have no crosswalks?) bunnies and even deer. No bears.

garbage dumps are great places to go at night and watch. that being said i don't shot things i won't eat, but i did get between a mom and her two cubs one year bow hunting. i froze in my tracks, and waited till the cubs walked passed hoping i wouldn't have to use one shot with my bow at a charging full grow-en mama.
my brother and cousin climbed trees that were about 6 inches in diameter one year. the tress were to small for a bear to climb, and yet big enough that a bear can knock down.
