My daughter was 7 when she got one in her room, but still does not have cable. She has a TV with a VCR and a huge collection of tapes to watch.

My daughter got hers when she turned 10. But we had very strict rules on what she could and could not watch, how long she could watch, etc. We would not have permitted it if she was a problem in other areas. But she loved to read, was a good student, was well behaved, etc., so this was a reward for her. When she got older, if she misbehaved, the TV came out of her room until she "earned" it back with good behavior.

If there was one thing that made me lose my eye-sight the fastest it was falling asleep with the T.V on. Regret it greatly.

If they are still home when 18 then they can start having their own TV and computer in their room. I do not want a hermit living in my house.

    12. But I always had a TV in my room. At age 12 though, I was always outside doing something. Playing sports, walking in the woods, or just hanging with friends.

That's the difference between then and now. After school, we hit the basketball court, Boys Club or Community Center. The last thing we wanted was to be cooped up inside.

Make them do something really weird and force them to watch t.v. with the rest of the family. You can even control what they watch.

That's one reason kids are so fat and lazy. What's wrong with watching tv in the living room as a family. There are some things kids should have privacy on but not what they watch on tv

15-and that's with some very clear rules about how much can be watched, when and what. If you have cable, monitor what channels or pay per views they are accessing.

I hate the way people make it out as if the TV itself is bad. It's not. It's the way you're brought up to think about it. My family has always had a TV in our bedrooms. Every person in the house does. The youngest is 5. Having a TV in a room doesn't have to mean it's connected to actual channels. My siblings have their dvd player and consoles plugged in. They use it when they want to play games and my little sister likes to fall asleep with movies playing. Half the time the kids are outside and don't even care to watch it until bedtime or they're all sitting in the living room. Not everything has to be evil just because most parents use it as a babysitter and others see it as a way of corrupting a kids mind. How about you actually sit there and watch the shows with your kid instead of making it an individual activity? You are allowed to tell kids what they can and can not watch and when and when they can't watch it. Do people realize that? imo

Good question. I'm interested to see the opinions. I had one at least by the age of seven. Of course that was before the advent of cable, vcr and video games. I did'nt do homework anyway, so I don't know if it affected me adversely. I think the programs back then were fairly decent.

    Up to their parents.

Speaking entirely hypothetical as I have no children and don't wish to have children, I would not even have a cable box or a subscription for TV whatsoever. I and my kids, however, would have computers and the internet - at least both of those are good for learning things, unlike TV. I wouldn't want to subject my kids to the trash on TV, and I'm not even talking about the nudity here... mostly, its all the Hollywood BS and the propaganda and lies from the media and Government etc. I would be more concerned with shielding my kids from (they didn't call it "PROGRAMMING" for nothing)!

I always had a TV in my boys room ... doesn't mean they could watch it whenever they wanted - and I had restrictions on the channels.

When I was twelve I had a TV in my room and at the time it was awesome. But now I know it was a horrible mistake.
