Weather Bulletin the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Weather Bulletin

This text is from a county emergency manager out in the western part of

the Upper Peninsula of Michigan after a severe snow storm last winter.

The Mining Journal, Marquette , MI

Up here in the Northern part of Michigan we just

recovered from a Historic event

--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" ---

with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow

and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half,

knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of

motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads,

isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.
Photobucket

FYI:

.

FEMA did nothing.

No one howled for the government.

No one blamed the government.

No one even uttered an expletive on TV.

Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.

Our Mayor's did not blame Bush or anyone else.

Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else either.

CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC did not visit - or even

report on this category 5 snow storm.
Photobucket

Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.

No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.

No one looted.

Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.

Nobody expected the government to do anything either.

No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah,

No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.

No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.

Photobucket

Nope, we just melted the snow for water.
Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.

The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks

and didn't ask for a penny.

Local restaurants made food, and the police and fire

departments delivered it to the snow bound families.

Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.

Photobucket

We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.

We put on an extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die".

We did not wait for some affirmative action government

to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized

by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.

Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen

this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

Photobucket

I hope this gets passed on.

Maybe ....
SOME people will get the message ....
The world does Not owe you a living!!!

Global warming??
You!

I don’t see why the pain and natural disasters of the different regions of our country have to pit us against each other. Obviously the Katrina disaster was a horror for every one. My thought is that those in the north deal with disaster yearly. They stay properly prepared. The people and the government have become lazy in the south where this kind of disaster happens rarely. We need to be prepared to take care of our self and our neighbors regardless of where we live. Our communities are the responsibility of the residents that live there and the people we elect to office. If your community is unsafe do something about it! If global warming is true then the coast will get more and more sever storms take the warning and be prepared to take care of your self. Then the government can come in and help people get back to A LIFE STYLE. Nobody is guaranteed you a certain life style except your own ability to produce it.

Even though this was not an actual event (according to snopes), there is still something to be said about the fact someone cared enough to send it out. There is a message to be heard. Many people agree with the message and more communities SHOULD behave just as the email stated. If people acted like this, there would be hope for a better tomorrow. Our liberal government has created lazy, unreliable, worthless people due to giving a handout in everyones hand that is out. People should be more reliant on their own abilities to survive, and on their neighbors and communities for support. It saddens me for the elderly that remember when the world WAS that way. We have lost our way and our current government is leading us further and further away from what we were.

God Bless America!

i never said wikipedia refered to snopes as liberal, i merely said look it up on wikipedia. liberal was my take from everything coming out of their site regarding anything negative toward their slant and the fact that they "actively" campaigned for Obama.

what i could have better articulated was that wikipedia found that it is a mom and pop shop. sorry for the confusion.

I couldn't agree with you more! I believe that our socialistic government is working very diligently to revoke the freedoms our country is based on, and will not stop until they own and conrol everything. Since when does the government OWN anything? As you stated, they are forcing me and you to pay for others happiness with no effort of pursuit on their part and I am sick of carrying the load of every freeloader that has their hand out. I am not against the government having the ability and willingness to help it's people in desperate times of need, but the government does not OWE anyone anything and too many people feel that way. You are correct, the more the government hands out, the more likely the socialist liberals will be kept in office. They dwell on the bottom feeders of our country, those who will not do for themselves. It's a scary time in our nation, and if this continues I see civil conflicts and the risk of a mutany against the administration. This country needs to stand on it's own two feet and take back what is ours before it's too late. NOW, how that for a rant! lol. Thanks for getting my blood flowing this morning!

Where do you get your information from? I certainly hope it's not from snopes. Further, I wasn't aware I was writing a paper for college, but if I was, I'm certain I could find a good source for information.

I simply made the point that a premise derived from snopes is the wrong premise, and that snopes is not a good source for a politcal answer. I never said, "in college/school we were told never to use snopes as a reference EVER."

The information I received that tipped me off on snopes was not from wikipedia, but rather from the LA Times, who in turn made reference to wikipedia. It seemed expedient at the time to mention wikipedia than go into the whole LA Times scenario. However, now that I am aware my posts are going to held to a standard not being put on the MSM, I will be certain to make the proper references. I'm certain the LA Times does not meet your gold standard for informational reference, just as snopes fails on my end.

I think wikipedia is a decent source (again I am not writing an essay or thesis), not an end all, but certainly better than snopes.

So it appears we are at an impasse... I will use wikipedia and you can police my posts and ensure I hurt no other's feelings, or at the very least, let me know I have done so... It won't change the tenor or delivery of my posts but at least I know I have done my part and created discussion.

This letter is a lie first propagated in 2005. It is no more true today. Change it from Bush to Obama, and it's still a lie. Anyone who sends you this is lying to you, and making you out to be a fool. They are punking you. Anyone justifying this letter because they think it's a parable is attempting to justify a lie, and furthering a lying piece of propaganda.

Words matter, and have consequences. The truth matters.

the people in New orleans had DAYS to leave, they also live well below sea level and this shold have been expected. Dont make excuses for their behavior. They acted badly. With all the hurricanes that have devistated other locations across the gulf shores over ALL these years...No other state has even demanded so much from the government and the behavior with looting and wanting MONEY have never been like it was in new Orleans!

I don't think it was meant to be a real story. It was not claiming actually when the snowstorm pictures were taken and it appeared to be using Michigan's snowfall and recovery as model to express how people can work together on their own (MI Hazards Awareness).

They certainly do get the big snow up there. I snowboarded at Mt. Bohemia a year ago and also at Marquette Mt. the year before. I've personally talked with people up there that have had snow up to their rooftops. Lake affect snow is really big up there and they certainly do plan for it as trees get taken down in strong winds and the inches accululate but that story was a bit exaggerated for a point it looks like. Snoops looks like an interesting site but it has it's inconsistancies, too.

VIRTUAL TOURIST: Marquette, like many Northwoods communities, enforces an overnight ban on street parking during the winter months - November 1 to April 15. (Six and a half months of winter? Yep.) Keeping your driveway clear is essential. It can also be quite challenging, especially after a 25-inch dump such as is shown in this photo from 1997. (That's my driveway - it's a long one, and I don't have a snowblower.) http://www.virtualtourist.com...

USA TODAY: Folks across the UP of Michigan are bracing for yet another round of snow tonight in this seemingly endless winter of 2007-08. So far this winter, Marquette has received 181.9 inches of snow, which, amazingly, is only 6 inches above its seasonal average of 175.4 inches. While that's certainly a lot of snow, it can't compare to the all-time record for snow in Marquette, which was which was 319.8 inches (THAT'S 26 FEET!!!) that fell in the winter of 2001-02 (http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/med... ). http://blogs.usatoday.com/wea...

I KNOW the UP, LP and surrounding areas get tons of snow, I lived there for 28 years.

Someone USED that weather tidbit, found some kick-ass snow storm images and put together that offensive email, rallying like-minded folks and perpetuating the myths about Katrina. I have a friend that worked as a counselor to victims of Katrina down in Texas. It was the hardest 5 weeks of her life. She dealth with rape victims, hungry people, people mourning the loss of life as they knew. People lost friends and family, some people couldn't FIND their friends and family. People that spent their entire lives there cannot go back. Would you be able to just "go back to work" after experiencing such devastation!?

Clearly you have not read all that much about the ramifications of Katrina or your sources are ignorant of the facts - or your sources don't care about the facts. Yes, a lot of people (the mayor was mentioned in a thread below) screwed up, but that doesn't get us off the hook when it comes to caring about our fellow man.

Well i live in Louisiana and i was there when Katrina hit. I went to the shelters with food, clothing and money and was horrified at what i witnessed. The welfare sucking losers that stayed in NO stayed there for one reason... to lot, rape and murder. N.O. got exactly what it deserved. It is to bad that the national guard did nto kill more of those thugs when they had the chance.
The email above is a hoax just like most emails like it, but it does not change the fact that when something like Katrina happens in the north you might hear it mentioned on the news and then they go on to something much more important like our DUMB ASS Persident.

we got alot of the katrina victims from new orleans here in mississippi and it's amazing how many of them were arrested in my town alone for commiting burglaries and rape. i'm sorry but i don't pity those lazy welfare recipients. they knew a storm was coming yet they sat on their lazy asses and waited for the working people and the government to rescue them. i guess that's what this country has done to the lazy that expect everything to be handed to them. and i'm sure they're still sitting on their lazy asses letting us, the working people feed and clothe them and once again...rescue them. i commend any community / town / state that comes together and works through a situation like this instead of sitting around expecting handouts and the national guard and god knows who else, to come bail them out. my heart goes out to ALL the elderly who suffered and lost their lives during katrina and to all the animals that suffered through it. god bless them.
