When they returned from their vacation in the Bahamas, David and Elena Barnes decided to share a home video of their family snorkeling with sharks on YouTube. What was meant to be viewed primarily by friends and relatives quickly went viral, provoking massive amounts of controversy. In the beginning of the 9-minute clip, Power Boat Adventures employees are seen feeding nurse, reef, and lemon sharks. Later in the video, David, Elena, and their five-year-old daughter Anaia are seen swimming with them.

As the video piled up hits, the Internet began chiming in. Many criticized the parents for putting their daughter in danger, while others supported their actions. Eventually, the couple disabled commenting on the video and left a message defending their parenting skills. They explained that these varieties of sharks are rarely aggressive and that the company in the Bahamas has been operating for twenty years without incident.

They also appeared on “Good Morning America” to defend themselves. “Life is too short to be boring,” said Elena. “There’s just always risk assessments in life every day,” added David. “I’m more concerned that they don’t put seatbelts in school buses.”

So, what do you think SodaHeads? Were David and Elena Barnes being reckless?

I'd guess that school buses are more dangerous than these sharks. At least they're teaching their daughter how to live life.

Sharks are harmless unless you provoke them. They don't like eating humans. Any you are more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a shark.

I agree. I personally am actually a bit afraid of sharks. But I justify the parents opinion anyway.

I think they read humans are kind of greasy and taste like perservatives. One of those, 'if you are hungry enough, you'll eat anything' kind of deals.

Tell that to the 22 people who were attacked by Lemon sharks. And the 27 who were attacked by Nurse sharks and the people who were attacked by Reef sharks.

As of early 2009, 11 unprovoked attacks and 21 attacks total (none fatal) were listed on the International Shark Attack File that are attributable to the blacktip reef shark

She was under the constant supervision of her parents and the body guard and she seemed to have never veered too far away from them. Those sharks are of the lesser aggressive sharks (from what I remember learning), but like any animal they can achieve unpredictable actions, so there was definitely a lot of risk, but I think the proper precautions were set. I don't think she, or anyone that I could see, went out of their way to interact directly with the sharks but instead viewed from afar.

Life is full of risks and dangerous surprises. I could get slammed by a drunk driver on the way to work or get shot in the head while filling up for gas. That's life. You can't fear it forever.

Parents do certain things, but cannot tell you how to live your life forever. Just like both me and my mom knows that working at the EFRC can be dangerous, but I would still work there anyway.

Her "parents" are morons. Some people just shouldn't have kids. IF I had kids, I'd never put them in water that has sharks in it.

I don't see how this is reckless, there is potential in danger in everything a person does, she probably has a better or equal chance of having her school shot up.

Or choking on their cheerios, or getting in a car crash on their way to school. Some people get so caught up in what looks dangerous, that they forget the fact that some of the biggest risks to their child's life lies in their everyday routine.

Well far as I am concerned, your parents didn't make good choices. And in Rome they had orgies and sex with children, so I guess you think that is ok too huh.

I wouldn't say reckless. Reckless would be letting her jump in while he was feeding the sharks! Obviously this is a resort that has this attraction and has monitoring and safety protocols. Now yes, any animal is unpredictable and this is still a dangerous situation for anyone let alone a 5 yr old. But under the circumstances I wouldn't say their reckless, just very trusting.

    this is a BAD idea.

now that girl is going to take away from this the lesson that sharks are not dangerous predators.... they are cute, like a dolphin... who are not cuddly either, btw.

Or she will take away that there is danger in everything (hence why they had the feed the sharks so much before they swam) and that you shouldn't always live life so safe and that it is okay take risks and have adventures.

Haven't you ever watched Animal Planet? There's plenty on TV to stike fear into every child a thousand times over. From what I've seen, kids are usually the apprehensive ones, and parents always trying to coax them into something.

I just think that all animals are unpredictable, just think she should have been older.
We dont want to be a nanny state, what would have happend if the shark would have taken a bite, would the parents have taken the attitude, its ok it was a accident, these things do happen, or would they have sued!

Yes that what i though too, the voice they had prior to the event "let her enjoy life is for living" would have gone righ out of the window, they would have seen the $ sign they would have has a Shark lawyer and sued the pants of them.

On the surface when you see the headline you think the parents put a child in the middle of a shark infested area of water somewhere away from supervision. But after reading and watching and researching the swim on the Internet you realize the parents were only trying to show their child more about life. In that environment, an attack by a shark is almost non existent. Your child has a greater chance of being hurt in school, in traffic and at the hands of molesters. I'm not 100% sure I would allow mine, unless I was there and understood the environment.

Good point, but there are people who were conisiderd animal experts and they were killed by animals they thought they knew everything about that animal.
