When they returned from their vacation in the Bahamas, David and Elena Barnes decided to share a home video of their family snorkeling with sharks on YouTube. What was meant to be viewed primarily by friends and relatives quickly went viral, provoking massive amounts of controversy. In the beginning of the 9-minute clip, Power Boat Adventures employees are seen feeding nurse, reef, and lemon sharks. Later in the video, David, Elena, and their five-year-old daughter Anaia are seen swimming with them.

As the video piled up hits, the Internet began chiming in. Many criticized the parents for putting their daughter in danger, while others supported their actions. Eventually, the couple disabled commenting on the video and left a message defending their parenting skills. They explained that these varieties of sharks are rarely aggressive and that the company in the Bahamas has been operating for twenty years without incident.

They also appeared on “Good Morning America” to defend themselves. “Life is too short to be boring,” said Elena. “There’s just always risk assessments in life every day,” added David. “I’m more concerned that they don’t put seatbelts in school buses.”

So, what do you think SodaHeads? Were David and Elena Barnes being reckless?

I'd guess that school buses are more dangerous than these sharks. At least they're teaching their daughter how to live life.

My husband was born in Florida, is a diver and has raised gators in his bathtub. I call him "nature boy" and I'm sure he knows a hell of a lot more about both than you do.

By what? Gators, sharks or snakes? He rides mountain bikes and sometimes the gators are across the trails. They won't usually come after you because they aren't fed by humans, but I wouldn't put my five year old on the trail with one. He's been bitten by snakes, chased by alligators but never by sharks. It doesn't really mean anything, he's an adult and can make his own choices. Sometimes things happen and I wouldn't let my dog swim in a pond or lake with gators, much less my kids. It wasn't long ago that a kid was water skiing and he fell into a pit of water moccasins and was killed. My in-laws don't believe a hurricane can kill you in Florida either because they've lived here so long and have never been in a big one. Does that mean that it can't happen?

We're not living our lives in fear, we mountain bike, we're at Whistler, BC right now downhill mountain biking and we snow ski. We just try not to do stupid things with children.

Since this article is about lemon sharks, the question is how many times has a lemon shark attacked him? Where did he study them? Where did he get his degree?

Oh, don't be ridiculous. Okay, let's take a look at Lemon sharks in a feeding frenzy! I accept your apology for your misinformation!

What? No comment? They never once attacked or acted like they wanted to attack the living, breathing, warm blooded human in their midst. You got an answer for that? I am waiting.

So you'd have to see one attack a human with your own eyes to believe it? God help your kids.

Yes I would. Especially when there is not one, not a single solitary record of a lemon shark attacking a living person. God help your kids for your paranoia. And you still better get that pom away from your kids.

Oh my God. You actually found ONE. Congratulations. And I will take the victims word for it, being as he himself said he has worked with these sharks for 6 years and never been attacked til then. So how old is this video??

And like your precious poms, who attack rarely but do, I guess they all should be banned.

LOL, the video was from 2010 right in Florida, maybe a neighbor! It's not the only Lemon Shark attack, there are more on record. Not everyone makes a video, you know!

My Pomeranian has itty bitty teeth, your point is mainly pointless. I'd be more worried that you'd put your child in danger to make your point, than I'd worry about which animal it might be!

BTW, I have no small children, mine is grown. We did plenty of adventurous things, if you knew us you'd know how ridiculous your premise is. I just didn't put my child in danger unnecessarily. It's called being a good parent.

Wild animals aren't domestic animals, no matter how well behaved and isolated from the wilderness: they can simply change their mannerisms at the drop of a hat. There are plenty of stories about animals suddenly turning on their kids, snakes eating babies, about "domesticated" tigers who suddenly turn on their owners/trainers, etc. Moreover, even though this was well supervised danger and under controlled conditions, it's still dangerous...

To the quote: "Life is too short to be boring," I say this: "Life is too short for the careless." How long will your life be if you, say, jumped out of a plane without a parachute? Sounds like an excuse to justify actions.

    Take care,

I have heard of more domesticated dogs attacking and killing kids than I have of sharks doing so...which is more dangerous again?

Which is most dangerous depends on factors which can't be represented by statistics :P Would you say that the stingray that killed Steve Erwin is more dangerous than a Lion, than a gun, than a car accident? Indeed, don't try to conflate hearsay/statistics with levels of danger :P Take care,
  • Andrea Anthony... 2012/07/08 04:43:59
    Andrea
No I would not because freak accidents happen. Millions of people come in contact with stingrays from May to October at beaches all over the world. How many are killed by them? Point made.

And? People let their kids do things that can be dangerous for years like letting their kids take prescription medicine, riding buses without seatbelts, swim with dolphMoreau resorts or aquariums (more dangerous than sharks), swim with sea lions, swim with orcas, etc should it be called bad parenting?

Comparing swimming with wild animals to other statistically more dangerous activities doesn't work in my book. I, say: Swimming with wild animals is more innately prone to unpredictably dangerous side-effects. Also, the conditions are just not comparable, they are too different for me.

I wish there was an undecided option. Nurse, Reef, and Lemon sharks are not dangerous. If the child is a good swimmer, there is likely no problem AS LONG AS SHE HAS AN ADULT RIGHT WITH HER! It is the swimming issue rather than the shark issue that concerns me.

I disagree, it's s potentially dangerous no matter how mild-mannered the species of shark. They could become startled and drag her under the water or some other unpredictable behavior. Wild animals can always change their behavior.

It's like people who decide to let their babies be around domesticated snakes, around friendly dogs, and so forth, only to have them kill their loves ones through some unknown behavior.

So can domestic dogs. More dogs kill kids than sharks do. And people are in the oceans by the millions everyday.

Domesticated dogs can kill babies/children, wouldn't call them "more dangerous" per say. Danger depends on conditions and circumstances. I'm just stating the obvious, allowing your children to play in a den of wild sharks isn't the same as petting a small puppy :P Although, most likely nothing would have happened, you know that the facility that offers the service has insurance against such things: It's dangerous, that's why.

Squirrels are wild animals and can harm a human, yet how many are giving people rabies by attacking in their habitat? Just because an animal is not domesticated does not make it deadly.

Going for a drive in the car is potentially dangerous too. are you going to stop doing it? I doubt it. Letting children ride buses that don't have seatbelts is potentially dangerous, and yet most parents let them go anyway. Almost everything we do has the potential for bodily injury or death. Being afraid to do something because you MIGHT get hurt is a poor reason to not do something. that might have been the only chance that little girl had for that kind of excitement. Her parents might have saved for years for that trip. She will remember that for the rest of her life. It was really less dangerous than driving there was.

most sharks are fine to be around and rarely attack people. also with these species of sharks you're very much safe with them. why teach little kids to fear something thats so cool?

there was no danger, i've petted sharks before. ones to really worry about are bulls and tigers and a small hand full of others. while the great white attacks people because they think they are a seal, it's main prey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
