When they returned from their vacation in the Bahamas, David and Elena Barnes decided to share a home video of their family snorkeling with sharks on YouTube. What was meant to be viewed primarily by friends and relatives quickly went viral, provoking massive amounts of controversy. In the beginning of the 9-minute clip, Power Boat Adventures employees are seen feeding nurse, reef, and lemon sharks. Later in the video, David, Elena, and their five-year-old daughter Anaia are seen swimming with them.

As the video piled up hits, the Internet began chiming in. Many criticized the parents for putting their daughter in danger, while others supported their actions. Eventually, the couple disabled commenting on the video and left a message defending their parenting skills. They explained that these varieties of sharks are rarely aggressive and that the company in the Bahamas has been operating for twenty years without incident.

They also appeared on “Good Morning America” to defend themselves. “Life is too short to be boring,” said Elena. “There’s just always risk assessments in life every day,” added David. “I’m more concerned that they don’t put seatbelts in school buses.”

So, what do you think SodaHeads? Were David and Elena Barnes being reckless?

I'd guess that school buses are more dangerous than these sharks. At least they're teaching their daughter how to live life.

Lemon and nurse sharks are quite harmless, as evident by the video and the vast amount of people swimming with them... shouting "5 year old swimming with sharks" can sound really wrong, but given the context it's really not.

I went on several scuba diving shark feeds in the Bahamas.
These reef sharks mouths are to small and people are to big interest them.

BUT a pile of these sharks will get greedy and act before thinking to try and get food before another shark gets their first. So a five year old won't know to keep their hands in against their body and not engage the shark. These sharks will bite a hand or finger off. Maybe even carry a small child off.

Certain shark species are not aggressive at all towards humans. I've been in the water with up to 30 white and black tipped reef sharks along with occasional lemon and nurse sharks. Bull sharks are probably the most aggressive and they are far more likely to turn up off a beach in Florida where parents let their kids frolic in the surf.

Here's the break down: 2011 stats for a shark attack- All attacks recorded were from three species Bull, Tiger, and White. Total global attacks 5,197. 477 female 4720 male. Only 1,333 proved fatal. Estimated global beach/shore water tourism was 27.6 million making this a 1:5,310 chance of being attacked if she were swimming with one of the three species that attacked last year(unknowingly). Her chances of dying were 1:20,705.
To put this into perspective, you have a 1:4,807 chance of being involved in a fatal car accident (including pedestrians) which is a 10% better chance of dying in a car accident than just being attacked by a shark and over 400% better chance of dying in a car accident than dying of a shark attack.
And this all ignores the fact that Females statistically are better off against sharks by 90.8% according to last years statistics!

I dove the Bahamas for shark feedings. They are black tipped reef sharks. not very big with small mouths at largest maybe half a dinner plate. People are to big for them. So we keep our arms in and hands in fist. but having a 5 year old is bad since the kid is around the size of their prey and if several sharks are in a frenzy to get food before the others they will grab what they don't want and sometimes keep it if they think another wants it.

I didn't say it couldn't happen, I just think it's no more likely than any other accident. People are so afraid to take any risks these days.

I wasn't arguing with you and your info.
I thought you would be interested since you had all that data.

More people die and slip in bathtubs every year than get bit by sharks.
Its just not as exciting and it doesn't sell as many newspapers.

(most people don't grease the tub though either LOL)

And add to the fact that she was swimming with nurse sharks and lemon sharks?

Yeah, I've heard of each of them biting, but I think only ONCE in my entire life. The kid was safe, and she's being taught respect for the ocean and its creatures. All for it. :-)

Awesome amount of work you put into those statistics. The female/male statistics are interesting. Makes one wonder if males are ten times more likely to be in the water with sharks or if they just look a little meatier to the sharks.

I think that it might have something to do with the gender proportion of surfers, recreational divers, fisherman, and professional divers (seeing as how they might be the most commonly bit persons). The statistics didn't account for the fact that some of the recorded bites may have come from fisherman freeing sharks from their nets when they pull them up. Basically, proposed wounded fisherman might go to hospital and the doc says "How'd that happen?" and he says "Shark bit me!" and it becomes part of the statistic. Fisherman and professional divers are overwhelmingly male, so that may have something to do with it.

On the one hand, these sharks are apparantly somewhat tamed, as they are captive, instead of wild and there were a lot of people swimming with them. On the other hand, they're freakin' SHARKS!!

Is it necessary to be rude to a person because you happen to know more about a subject? When I say I would never let a five-year-old swim with sharks, I speak as a mother and a grandmother, and you can never know how that feels. Nothing is worth risking the safety of my precious babies.

the sharks arent dangerous. dolphins attack more per year than sharks. And i bet you would jump at the chance to take him/her to see those. Oh and their are more toilet caused deaths than shark attacks per year.
I am very sorry for being rude. I just am a ardent animal lover and i dont like the assumption that certain animals are relentless attackers or big flea bags.Everyone asumes he is a attack dog because he is big and barks. They talk about how dangerous he iss.But he just thinks they want to hurt me. My two yr old neice plays with him and he is thrice as big as her. But to everyone, even my little brother,he is just waiting to take a chunk out of everyone for fun.

I'm not that way - just scared to death of pretty much everything in the ocean. And being that I've never been there, I don't have the experience that you do. My brother lives in Florida and has gators in his backyard. He wanted me to move my grandchildren there to live with him! I think he's insane!

i see what you mean. But gators are actually fun to wrestle with!Haha. My grandmother has big property and panthers come into her backyard rarely but repeatedly.I've even caught some sharks while fishing.Unbelievably after awhile you get used to it and you start to appreciate them. You should really visit florida, its fun.

Geez.........she was submersed in water for the first nine months of her existence! I don't see any recklessness in this activity and I DO applaud the parents for giving the child not only the opportunity but the expertise to perform this kind of activity. Certainly will make Show & Tell a lot more interesting.

Like the parents said Lemon sharks are basically harmless towards humans and they were with a company that knew what they were doing they didn't just going swimming with a bunch of random sharks on their own.

Not at all. How many people are bite by sharks each year compared to attacked and killed by a dog. Per National Geographic's number, 16 people are bitten by a shark each year in the US. The yearly average of both adult and children killed by a dog attack is 84 people, over half of those were children.

So I think if these parent are considered to be neglectful, any family with a dog should be seen as the same.

I swam with these sharks in Belize. They are harmless. Thousands of people do this every year without incident.
