Was Walmart Right to Kick Woman Out for Wearing a String Bikini?

Maybe you've considered going to the store in something less-than-prudent on an exceptionally hot day -- perhaps a too-short skirt or an especially revealing top.

Just don't go to Walmart if you plan on finishing your spree in the outfit.

Sandy McMillan had to learn the hard way.

The Oregon resident decided to go to her local Walmart in a string bikini top on Sunday because of the 90 degree weather, and ended up with her face (and her impressive bikini bod) all over the news.

sunday 90 degree weather ended impressive bikini bod news

But she didn't get pegged for dress code violation. She says an employee told her to put a shirt on because she was violating "health codes."

McMillan's sister, Karla Vogt, told KVAL News, "I was horrified. I am embarrassed. We just walked in, straight over to the clothing. It's wrong. If you don't like the way someone looks, don't look at them."

McMillan added, "I hadn't done anything obnoxious or outlandish."

KVAL reached out to Walmart to get their official stance on the issue.

A spokesperson for the company claims McMillan was actually approached by an employee because she was verbally abusing customers, and that she was not even asked to leave.

Despite their claim, they still apologized.

"We can understand her frustration," the spokesperson said. "It was not our intent to offend the customer, and we have apologized to her. We have also reinforced with our associates our expectations of how to handle these matters."

Your notion of "appropriately" attired is different from my notion. If you want to go into a store dressed to the nines, that's your option. But don't try to limit my freedom of dressing how I choose (whether it be a string bikini or turtle neck) whenever I leave my house. Walmart should just be happy that they have customers.

Absolutely Disgusting, inappropriate, and would be a dress-code violation at any other business establishment. Walmart needs to post a dress code in large type, in full view, at several locations at all store entrances, and in the parking lot.

Everyone knows the saying..."No shoes, No shirt, No service". Come on now....no one wants to have to look at that, so be considerate and throw a shirt on over top (it would have taken all of 5 seconds to do that).

Excuse me? "...no one wants to have to look at that..." Look at what? A woman who is comfortable in her body no matter what the shape? Listen, youngster, I am one of those women who fought for equal rights for women. If you want to dress a certain way, go ahead. But you can't tell others how to dress. You are as bad as a man and it's girls like you who push back all the progress that was made for women's rights. Yes, even if it means somebody doesn't dress the way YOU think they should, they still have that right. And if Walmart makes a "dress code" for their customers, they might as well shoot themselves in the foot for all the business they'll lose.

Well listen hear you "oldie"...you can take you feminist crap elsewhere bc I'm entitled to my opinion whether or not you like it and it's not because of you, but bc of those who have fought for our country! Who are you to say that a business doesn't have the right to make a dress code?? You can have your liberal views...I'm not buying into them.

Yes, it's a private business and they can set the dress code rules for shoppers. If you don't like it, don't shop there.

A bikini is a woman's shirt and you know damn well that if the woman was slim and attractive we wouldn't be having this debate. Talk about discrimination!

This is not Tinman lol.....................I have worn bikini tops with swimming trunks to Wal-Mart before and no one never kicked me out. Maybe because I'm not overweight....I don't know, but misconduct is the only way to be kicked out. She had shoes a top and bottoms which allows her to stay. She must of done something else in order for her to be kicked out. Once again she may not look good to most people, but she has the right to wear that since it is allowed at Wal-Mart. If I can go in there without being disturb then she can too.

I'm just curious...why would you ever wear a bathing suit top into a store??? I'm sorry but that comes across as trashy to me. It would only take a few seconds to throw a shirt over top. A bathing suit is not a shirt..."No shoes, No shirt, No service". She is not allowed to wear whatever she likes if they have dress codes in place and health regulations to uphold.

When it's hot outside I wear as little as possible. I have gone shopping with just my bikini top and short shorts many times without a problem. Why? Because I was great to look at. So stop being a hypocrite and recognize that this is discrimination against women who don't look the way YOU think they should look.

According to the story... she was NOT KICKED OUT!! All those that voted YES, didn't read the story. The reason she was confronted, by store employees, was not due to her dress or lack of it... it was because she was arguing with customers. The store has a right to bring order to its place of business. The bikini and tattoos just added to the drama.

For those of us reading the article, we also see that she wasn't kicked out.

Were they right? I dont know. But the important thing it that they HAVE THE RIGHT. Walmart can decide who to do service with and what standards to hold. Any private business has that right. But, then again, Walmart recieves so much god damn tax payer dollars and write offs that maybe they shouldnt have private business rights.... I hate Walmart...and Walmart hates America.

Walmart loves itself and all it can get from whatever source. It's the corporatist American way. And I hate that as much as I hate Walmart! I think your comment about their not having private business rights needs to apply to a lot of other companies as well, like Monsanto Frakenfood and Halliburton Defense Works.
  • FatherL... merlins... 2011/08/01 17:47:42 (edited)

Well, I'd disagree actually. All those companies, including Walmart, should have the right to make their own decisions as private businesses. I even would argue that if a business owner is a racist pig he should be allowed to say he doesnt serve other races. In the end, most people are not racist, and it is his business that will fail because people wont support it. That is freedom. Also, on that point, I'd rather know he is racist so I wouldnt give him my money. But, like private businesses, none of these corporations should be recieving tax payer dollars and special tax exemptions at all... NO corporation. Allow the free market, and stop the business/government embedding. Second, these businesses importing all their products from China need to have tariff's on their goods.
