Was Mitt Romney Right to Criticize Preparations for the London Olympics?

Fox Report with Shepard Smith 2012/07/27 17:33:33

Mitt Romney recently made some pretty undiplomatic remarks about the upcoming Olympics in London, saying he wasn't sure if the country was prepared to host the event. Do you think his comments hold some truth -- or was it a completely unpresidential move?

What's the big deal? The press has been reporting on security problems for weeks. Why the big hoopla when a candidate actually (gasp!) says what everyone else is thinking?

And reports from news sources in the UK and here show that he was right. You cannot improve things if every criticism is taken as a personal affront. Ticket distribution was poor, favoring EU nations over Asian and American nations. Security was questionable with several on the terror watch list allowed in the country and repeated breeches of security even during the opening ceremonies where a strange woman walked in with the Indian team.

As an Olympic Organizer himself, he is an Expert. His opinion in that regard should have been respected. Instead, the London folk wanted to chime in on the US elections. What he said was not that bad either.

The most entertaining thing are the former popular olympians flopping.
Otherwise Go Team USA and don't ever do this in London again!

One only has to reflect back when the Israeli team and coaches were taken hostage and eventually murdered to realize where Romney was coming from. England is a hot bed of muslim malcontents. When a private security agency couldn't find 18,000 individuals that vetted, it is cause for concern. Remember we have over 200 athletes competing.

It's actually funny because there were reports that the press and other agencies questioned the security of the Olympics.. the man headed up the Olympics before. I think he is entitled to make a statement and I consider him fully capable of having a valid opinion of what he saw as potential flaws. I guess they would rather hear platitudes of hollow support rather than maybe look at potential problems. They asked, he answered... why is it so bad to say what you think?????/

Funny, those are also the headlines on British papers. So by agreeing with the reports, how is Mitt being in any way disrespectful. I mean, if they didn't have enough water in the pools or matts in the gyms, would you simply say nothing? Many on the terror watch list were allowed into Britain, the ticket distribution has been catastrophic to the point where military personnel are acting as seat fillers and every comment Romney made has been confirmed. Part of the problem with the Obama administration is that any and all criticism is shouted down as racism. At some point even liberals have to face the truth.

It still was not his place to criticize them. First he said there was a problem, then when the fertilizer hit the fan,, then he said there was no problem and everything was fine all of a sudden. The man is a moron. You can dissect it anyway you want to, the fact remains that the Brits, can't stand him, including the current Prime Minister, or anyone else that becomes the Prime Minister. He will never be able to establish a good relationship with them as President.

What is that relationship going to sound like if Mitt actually wins?

The gaffe, of course, was not the female reporter screaming out a political question at the Tomb. It was Mr. Romney's aide being angry enough to say - albeit quietly - what I strongly expect just about every one of Romney's people would like to scream at the press - many of whom have worked mightily to undercut and ridicule every facet of his trip any way they could come up with.

Maybe I'm just too optimistic. But I can't help thinking that more and more people are catching on to the impossibly biased actions of these media people.

I can't help thinking that a great many people agree with what Mr. Romney said regarding the readiness of London for the Olympics, about the reasons Israel predominates economically over Palestinian Arabs and are elated at how the Polish people connected with him. Then, when they see/read reports that seem to contradict what actually appeared to take place, instead of being upset with Romney, they are upset with the press bias, and have even less faith in media than they used to (which, for some of us, is nearly impossible).

If so, the press assault on Mitt Romney could actually wind up benefitting rather than damaging him in his campaign against The Annointed One.

    At least I hope so."

Home Secretary Theresa May said Monday that G4S had "repeatedly assured us that they would overshoot their target."

Britain is calling in 3,500 extra troops to cover the positions G4S could not fill.

G4S chairman John Connolly says senior managers could lose their jobs over the fiasco.

The company said Monday its loss on the contract would range between $54 million and $78 million US in this financial year.

A loss of $78 million is about 12 to 13 per cent of the company's annual profit, analysts calculated.

The country's Olympic security plans fell under fresh scrutiny Sunday, with a newspaper report that several people on a terrorism watch list have been waved through airport border controls without being flagged and the revelation that the government was warned 10 months ago about the ability of G4S to fulfil its staffing obligations.

With less than two weeks until the opening ceremony, and athletes from around the world starting to arrive for the Games, government ministers are insisting the Games will be secure and dismissing the G4S fiasco as no more than a "hitch."

'It is incomprehensible that the Home Office didn't know about this.'
    — Labour Party MP Yvette CooperHowever, those assurances are being increasingly questioned. The Observer reported Sunday that, since the start of the month, immigration staff at London's Heathrow Airport have let through several people on a security watch list. When people on the list arrive in the country, it is supposed to be reported to counter-terrorism police or Britain's domestic intelligence service.

The newspaper cited unions as suggesting staff brought in to help relieve pressure at Heathrow, which has faced recurring problems handling large influxes of passengers, weren't being properly trained. The airport, Europe's busiest, has recently struggled to clear huge lines that build up at immigration checkpoints during peak times, leading to fears of Olympics-related chaos as tourists fly in to watch the games.

London has four other airports, but Heathrow is the only airport where participants can get their Olympic credentials, so it is handling the bulk of arrivals for the Olympics, which start July 27 and end Aug. 12.

The newspaper report left it unclear whether the people on the watch list were still in the country, whether they were intercepted later, or exactly why they had attracted the attention of counter-terrorism officials in the first place. Britain's Home Office declined to comment Sunday on the story."

Note the date-July 16th. Romney said nothing that wasn't being said at large in the British press.

My comment "your bias is showing" is used when one is going on and on about something when if it were reversed, they would not.

Romney voiced legitimate concerns that most everybody has with every Olympics. Since he has actually been in charge of the Olympic Games at one time, no one knows better than him all of the things that go into it. He also said not everything goes as planned but it always gets ironed out.

If you'r real concern is the British being offended, look no further than Obama. I mean how rude and offensive was he when he chose to return to Winston Churchill bust, which was offered & given to us by the British after 9/11. When Obama took office, the British offered to extend the possession of the bust, but Obama turned down their kind gesture and sent it back to them.... I think that's pretty darn rude. More so than Romney voicing normal concerns about the Olympics.

The British lent it to Bush for his art collection to the White House, when Obama took office he sent it back. It was the property of the British government/people.
It was something loaned to Dubya, not Obama. So it was sent back. It wasn't like it was a gift that Obama sent back. It needed to return back home to Britain anyway.

Exactly as I predicted, you have your Obama protection glasses on. The gracious offer was extended to Obama and he turned the British down & promptly sent back to them. That bust had nothing to do with the previous president... it had everything to do with one of our greatest allies showing our nation some honor due to something very tragic as 9/11 was. Obama did not think anything of that; he placed no importance into that. Maybe it was his childish behavior not wanting something George W. Bush had, which is no reason to insult an ally, and it says a lot to me. And it said a lot to the British. But please, continue ranting how Romney is blah blah blah for voicing legitimate concerns for a world event that involves everyone.
