Was Mitt Romney Hoping to Be Booed During His NAACP Speech?

No one likes to get booed, but some pundits are out in force saying that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney went for the boos at a recent NAACP event on purpose. I mean seriously, what did Romney expect? If you tell The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that the white guy is better for black people and that Obamacare sucks, you've got to be expecting some boos, right?

CSMONITOR.COM reports:
Mitt Romney expected and, his critics say, even wanted to be booed at the NAACP convention, as a signal to voters that he's willing to face an audience not likely to agree with him – and not pander.
romney expected critics booed naacp convention signal voters audience pander

I would think that mlk idea of judging a man on his character and not skin color would matter to the NAACP

How can you say that others in line to take them over would have run them correctly, when for the last 40 years America's Auto Industry (GM in particular) have been losing market share and CEOs have been getting larger and larger salaries??? Do you remember Ross Perot? He tried to save GM years ago and point out the errors in the ways of the GM Board of Directors and they kindly bought him out and kicked him to the curb.

Yes, I agree that many of those companies took that money and paid bonuses to their execs and upper managament, and it caused a backlash and more government scrutiny, and those companies have to pay that money back as well.

Oh, you must be talking about Al Gore then if you're talking about the 2000 election. Again, my point would be that Gore would have risen to the occassion and showed leadership as well as Bush did.

Companies that fail should fail regardless of who they are. It's called bankruptcy. It doesn't mean that the company closes it's doors, it means the people who run them lose and new people can come in and get it right.

I wonder if the unfulfilled promises of Barack Obama is the reason Joe Biden did his speaking for him at the NAACP?

What was his racist comment? I looked and I didn't see any. However, the person he was talking to "Arse-Whole" did make a statement that one could mistake for racist ". He state that they instll total and utter dependence, but I later found out he was talking about the NAACP, not Black People, so I give him a pass and I don't believe he's racist either.

"It makes it appear as if African Americans/other minorities automatically side with Obama because of race."

Polling data from numerous sources indicates that over 90% of blacks did vote for Obama because of his skin color.

"It makes it appear as if liberals and people who support Obama have racist tendencies."

That aforementioned 90% does have racist tendencies.

Really, people actually stated, "Oh I voted for him because he's Black". Come on....

Those same Black People overwhelmingly voted for Clinton too. In fact, 94% of Blacks voted for Clinton and 95% voted for Obama. Thats a 1% difference, I see no evidence of Blacks voting for Obama because of his skin color when the same percentage voted for Clinton.

"Really, people actually stated, "Oh I voted for him because he's Black". Come on...."

Morgan Freeman and Samuel L. Jackson both said that very thing. Obama is counting it. That's why he created the http://www.barackobama.com/af... site.

"Those same Black People overwhelmingly voted for Clinton too."

Yes many of them probably did vote for Clinton, but not because of his skin color.

"Thats a 1% difference, I see no evidence of Blacks voting for Obama because of his skin color when the same percentage voted for Clinton."

You see no evidence aside form that which I've already provided.

That would be my point! - that when those very same Black People voted for Clinton they weren't accused of being racist, so long as they vote for a White Candidate (and consequentially the White People who voted for White candidates weren't considered racist either). Why then, would you make the claim that if the Black People voted for a Black Candidate, they all of a sudden become racist? I don't get it???

As I told another poster, Bush's message for his second term was fear of a Terrorist Attack (very powerful) which got him elected. Obama's message was fear of economic collapse (very powerful) which got him elected. People are going to vote what their heart tells them to. Skin color is the least of the issues.

"Why then, would you make the claim that if the Black People voted for a Black Candidate, they all of a sudden become racist?"

If you consider voting for someone based on his skin color an act of racism, which I believe is an accurate assessment, I've already answered that question.
  • PM SoD 2012/07/19 17:50:23 (edited)

You seem to only apply this "accurate assessment" to Black People. History shows that Blacks voted in the same percentage range for Clinton (the Democrat). I don't understand your logic. If there would have been a Black Republican and a Black Democrat running for President, Blacks would have more than likely voted for the Democrat.

So the "African Americans for Obama" site doesn't strike you as generally worrisome?

A "White People for [generic white candidate]" site would certainly raise my hackles, just as the aforementioned site has.

Can't view it at my job, they've got political sites blocked, but I get your point. Can't say that I like that idea, shows divisiveness to me.

My point was simply that you can't paint all Black People with a racist brush because they voted the same way they've always voted, Democratic.

Until the Repub Party changes its message to attract more minorities, the Dems will continue to have an unequalled following of minorities.

I didn't paint all black people with a racist brush.

My wife is a non white.

The last thing any party should do is change it's message to attract any ethnic demographic. As you said, it's an exhibition of divisiveness.
  • PM SoD 2012/07/19 21:22:11

Well, I think parties have to evolve over time to be more inclusive. What worked 50 or even 25 years ago, might not be so appropriate in today's world. I don't see that as flip flopping, but more like changing with the times. I'm not saying we should be trying to change the national language to spanish to pander to hispanics voters, but if there are other things that are commonly recognized by a large minority group, we can at least acknowledge it.
  • SoD PM 2012/07/19 22:39:05
    SoD
An appeal to a particular demographic is pandering. It's more judicious to appeal to all citizens.
  • PM SoD 2012/07/24 20:14:27
    PM
Yes, it is pandering, but only to a point, depending on how far you go. Every community has issues specific unto itself, and to acknowledge them is in fact appealing to "all" citizens. One must be careful as to how far one goes however in this manner as there is a fine line between pandering and acknowledgement.

He sure didn't have to hope too hard. I'm pretty sure Bush was critized for Not attending an NAACP roast as the guest of honor. It's just a no win for any GOP candidate. So I think he was as honest as he could be in spite of it.

Some guy on O'Reily last night claimed Romney should have "tailored" his speach, but admitted it would have made no difference in the outcome.

Huh? If he would have tailored his speech, the guy on O'Reilly still thinks he would have gotten booed? So, if Romney would had said, I think the Affordable Health Care Act should remain in place and not be repealed, the NAACP would have still booed him??? I'm not so sure about that.

To say that he was "hoping" to get boo'd is silly...

More, I'm sure, he was 'expecting' it, though !

In light of this, I respect him, even more ;0 )

and is exactly what / who we need

as leader of this noble country ~

    Integrity is key, and imho,

    he wears it quite well
