Was it ‘Oppressive’ for These ‘White’ Christian Missionaries to Distribute VBS Invites Outside a NYC Public School?

The men allegedly stood at the public school’s front gate on Tuesday to hand out the invites during morning drop-off, a busy time during which children and parents flow into and out of the building. While church members claim that no children were forced to take the fliers, DNAInfo.com reports that a number of parents were uncomfortable with their children, ranging from grades first through fifth, being urged to do so.

What resulted was furor on the part of some who believe that it’s irresponsible and improper for missionaries to be taking such actions outside of a public school. But the criticisms went well beyond the traditional church versus state argument, as some parents even charged that the missionaries are “discriminatory.”

“I know this church. Every summer they truck these kids up to proselytize,” said Ernestine Heldring, a mother with children at the school who also attends a Dutch Reformed church in New York. “It‘s a brand of Christianity that’s homophobic and homogeneous, and I find it oppressive to have three white guys standing there making it impossible for kids to pass without taking a flier.”

While this may seem like an odd statement, apparently Heldring was uncomfortable with the racial differences between the three white missionaries and the diverse student body (67 percent of students at the school are African American). She was also upset over the church’s rejection of gay marriage.

What can possibly be less "opressive", and more tolerant, than to issue an INVITATION for someone to share time to learn your own culture or religion?

I would have thought it to be "exclusive" to not issue the invitation.

No, they were exercising, both their freedom of speech rights and free exercise of religion rights. No one 'had' to take an invitation and if someone was oppressed, it was the good people who cared enough to reach-out in an effort to invite youngsters to Vacation Bible School.
If there was ever a time our nation needed young people to rediscover our true national roots and foundations, it is now.

It was obviously a racist person that complained:
"...I find it oppressive to have three white guys standing there.."

Better make sure the children get to their liberal sexual perversion and victim status indoctrination public school classes on time.

You can or cannot participate...it is merely an invitation for the community!!! But how do you feel about condoms being passed out in public high schools? Does that seem opressive to you? Im m opinion, I prefer people leave it in their pants until they get home!

NO of course not. How silly. If you don't want your kid to go, don't send them VBS is really fun for most kids. Mine look forward to it so much. Sometimes they get invited even to participate in a friends VBS, and they are allowed to go. They do crafts, and sing songs, and do plays, and play games. It is really awesome.

They didn't have to take the invites. Just walk by them like you didn't see them. That is exactly what I would have done.

    How is it oppressive> ?
Its not like they were taking people and forcing them to come or threatening them if they didnt come, that would be Oppressive!
Handing out flyers is freedom of speech. SO, if you dont want to go dont take a flyer, or if you dont want to be rude -take a flyer and pitch it if your intention is to ignore it.
