Was an All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry Right to Cut This Guy Off?

All Bill Wisth wanted was a couple of pieces of fried fish. Is that so much to ask? OK, so it was more like... over a dozen pieces. But hey, the sign said "all-you-can-eat"! The 6 foot 6 inch, 350 pound customer is accusing Chuck's Place in Thiensville, Wisconsin, of false advertising after a waitress refused to bring him a 13th piece of fish. (Although, they reportedly gave him eight more pieces to-go.)

Wisth told a local news station, "We asked for more fish and they refused to give us any more fish. I think that people have to stand up for consumers." And stand up he did. He called the police, then started picketing the restaurant. But apparently Wisth has been a problem in the past. A waitress there says they've dealt with him for years, and that he still hasn't paid off his tab. In their defense, Wisth added, "They do have like some of the best pizza in town." Do you think the all-you-can-eat restaurant was right to refuse this guy more fish?

... It's called ALL YOU CAN EAT.

Not all we THINK you SHOULD eat

If you're going to put a limit, then don't advertise your special as "All you can eat", or at least put finer print that says the limit.

If the restaurant can't afford the hungriest of patrons, then by all means, just CANCEL the "all you can eat" special.

EDIT: Since some are under the impression I didn't read the article; yes, I did. No, I'm not defending this guy. HOWEVER, the restaurant IS at fault for not practicing PROPER refusal of service.

Instead of refusing him from the get-go - which they had EVERY RIGHT TO DO since he'd been causing problems before - they didn't, welcomes him in, and LET him order the ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT.

With that, since he was welcomed and allowed to order what he wanted, they HAVE to see that service through - all he CAN eat, or rather all he wanted to.

Case in point: The restaurant did NOT practice their right to refusal PROPERLY, and thus are unfortunately the ones at fault here. Lesson learned, I should hope.

Good for him! All you can eat means all you can eat. Plain & simple. I've been to many all you can eat buffets. I get full after a few plates. I always leave wishing a had a big stomach so I could eat more. Maybe I am just glutton.

They should have never have served him in the first place.

However......" still hasn't paid off his tab."

Could it be possible that they would serve him as long as he didn't cause a scene? Then when he started abusing their kindness they refused him food?

Seems logical, however they should have just told him to hit the road........

My comments are based purely on the photo: This guy wants to "stand up for consumers"?! Uh, can he even perform the simple stand-up maneuver? And yes, he is certainly a "consumer" in the grossest sense of the word.

By the way, if this obese BLACK gentleman was abusing the restaurant's all-you-can-eat policy, would they have refused him further service? Just some food for thought,,,pun intended. obese african_american male

Race has nothing to do with it. I have seen different races of people scam restaurants. It doesn't matter.

If it's all you can eat, do not false advertise. It is illegal to do so in the United States. Also, if he had a tab unpaid, why was he served before payment to begin with?

Buddy has an unpaid tab... they were clearly having issues with this customer that led up to this event.
But, of course, more than 50% of people will defend this tub of lard, 'cause "this is Amuricah"

Actually even though my vote is no, I don't defend this porker in the least.

I will say however that the restaurant is at fault for letting him order to begin with. He asked for the service, which they granted, and since it IS called all you CAN eat, they MUST fulfill that promise by giving him as much as he wanted.

The main penalty on their part was they did not exercise their right to refuse service PROPERLY. The RIGHT way to go about it would be to deny him from even placing an order. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

Also.... they supposedly hooked him up with EIGHT more to go. I don't know who was running the business at that time, but I'd sack their patooties for their stupid move.

  • Wyveryx Somkey ... 2012/05/19 20:53:50
    Wyveryx
Their rules? What about their responsibility?
This has nothing to do with entitlement, if they know someone with a history of tabbing the bill and not paying has come in, they should refuse service then, not after the fact and then cry foul.
It's just as much their fault as his, if not more so because they allowed him to eat.

They didn't refuse him from the get-go, but welcomed him in and let him order.

I'm not defending this jackass, but the mistake WAS on the fault of the restaurant for not properly exercising their right to refuse.

Although the fact that he has an outstanding tab makes it more understandable. If he was a paying customer, I don't think they would have had the right to deny him more food at an all you can eat buffet.

I agree. I mean, if he had a tab that was THAT outstanding, then the right action would be refusing business BEFORE ordering... not eleven pieces in.

And your point is what? If they didn't think he was going to pay the bill, they shouldn't have served him at all. I've never eaten at a restaurant where I was served part of my meal and then required to pay before being served the remainer of my meal. I doubt this was the case here either. So.....your point is?????
