In a denunciation of an American economic and political system that she said had become badly distorted, Massachusetts Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren declared to the Democratic convention Wednesday night that “the game is rigged” against many Americans. “We celebrate success,” Warren said. “We just don't want the game to be rigged” – a word she used half a dozen times in her 15-minute speech.

With the latest jobs report to be released Friday morning by the Labor Department, Warren painted a pessimistic portrait of the U.S. economy. “Our middle class has been chipped, squeezed, and hammered,” she said. “Talk to the construction worker I met from Malden, Mass., who went nine months without finding work” – an allusion to the 30 percent drop in employment in the construction sector since 2007. Without identifying any specific CEO by name, Warren said Wall Street executives had “wrecked our economy and destroyed millions of jobs,” but she said they “still strut around Congress, no shame, demanding favors, and acting like we should thank them.”

She portrayed middle-class Americans as law-abiding, and wealthy executives as lawbreakers.

Praising “nurses and programmers, salespeople and firefighters,” she said that “not one of them — not one — stashes their money in the Cayman Islands to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.”

The Washington Post reported in January that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has a stake in a partnership based in the Cayman Islands. But it said, “It is unclear how, if at all, Romney’s taxes were affected by the offshore arrangement.” Warren also tore into Romney as “the guy who said corporations are people. No, Gov. Romney, corporations are not people. People have hearts, they have kids, they get jobs, they get sick, they cry, they dance. They live, they love, and they die.” She said she and President Barack Obama want a country in which “everyone is held accountable. Where no one can steal your purse on Main Street, or your pension on Wall Street. “

She also praised the role of federal spending on infrastructure and public schools, saying “Obama believes in a country where we invest in education, in roads and bridges, in science, and in the future, so we can create new opportunities, so the next kid can make it big, and the kid after that, and the kid after that.”

Warren also used her time in front of the national television audience to burnish her self-portrait for Massachusetts voters: “I grew up in a family on the ragged edges of the middle class. My daddy sold carpeting and ended up as a maintenance man. After he had a heart attack, my mom worked the phones at Sears so we could hang on to our house.” And she was waiting tables at age 13, Warren told the crowd. While she blasted Romney in her speech, Warren did not mention the man she is running against: Republican Sen. Scott Brown, who was elected in a special election in 2010 for the seat once held by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Public opinion polling shows the race to be statistically tied. Winning the Massachusetts is vital to the Democrats’ hopes of retaining control of the Senate where they now enjoy a 53-seat majority.

she deserves a seat; in what alternate universe should this happen? at the GOP convention women and some men wore designer made vaginas to protest a women's right to choose. I am a man and do not usually get involved with abortion issues except to say that abortion should not be a woman's only option especially since so many forms of contraception are not available. and while it was fine that women wore vaginas in protest I am afraid they will vote their vaginas and elect this undocumented minority into office.
I am an independent and free from the party line yet I don't believe that Senator Brown was attacking Professor Warren's family but her inability to prove her heritage ( yet, her tag line about brown attacking her family but she will still work for ours was genius, untrue but brilliant) I also don't believe that Professor Warren, given her credentials, would need to show minority status to be hired by Harvard but to proclaim her as Harvard's first woman of color makes me sad for Harvard.

I'm a regular guy in the middle class and I would never vote for her. The Democrats have a pattern of raising taxes. I don't want to pay more taxes. They say they won't raise them on the middle class. They've said that before and they've either raised them anyway or re-defined the middle class as what was once the lower class. A leopard can't change its spots.

Wait is she the lying socialist who claimed to be part indian to claim minority status to get a teaching job ? Hmmm i guess the ends justifys the means when your a lying witch, Just ask debbie wasserman schultz. when your not quite qualified or no quite smart enough to get the job its always better to claim that things are rigged against you as opposed to working hard to try and improve your self or maybe even face the facts that you are not qualified for the job. Does she think that the NBA system is "rigged" against small white guys? Same arguement logic the socialist is using against the successful working person (of any color, creed, sexual preference) just so she and others of the same twisted anti american socialist mind set can re distribute other's wealth

This country badly needs to re-examine the failures of the capitalist system in a world of proprietary global oligarchies that cannot be allowed to fail. There are a good many countries with near-socialist National Health Systems. I suspect that only a minority of hem deliver the goods less well than our capitalist system, even as improved by Obama after his concessions to House and Senate pressures funded by the oxymoronic "health industry".

Then move there and dont let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Funny how when the well off in all these country's get sick they sure fly over to the US fast enough to get the treatment they really need to save their lives. And if Obama care is so good for the rest of us how come it aint good enough for the president and the senate ????
