In a country that allows guns to be owned for this very reason, I don't think running someone over is at all over the top. In fact it's probably a better outcome that a bullet in the head. Which no doubt some believe it would be warranted.

What if he had killed the customer - accidentedly or intentionally? Shop lifting is not punishable by death. Heck, at WalMart it wouldn't even be a felony.
