Sorry this is a long one, but I hope you read all of the information.
Violence Towards Humans + Animal Abuse
(KY) This month, a measure that would make it a Class D felony on the first offense for torturing a dog or cat breezed through the House Judiciary Committee after a lengthy discussion. The bill, sponsored by Republican Sen. Tom Buford of Nicholasville, would toughen the penalty for the first instance of subjecting a dog or cat "to extreme physical pain or injury, motivated by an intent to increase or prolong the pain of the animal."
Buford told the committee that he researched FBI reports in which a majority of serial killer have admitted in interviews that they tortured cats and dogs regularly.
Many studies in psychology, sociology, and criminology during the last 35 years have demonstrated that violent offenders frequently have childhood and adolescent histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty. The FBI has recognized the connection since the 1970s, when its analysis of the lives of serial killers suggested that most had killed or tortured animals as children. Other research has shown consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of more common forms of violence, including child abuse, spouse abuse, and elder abuse.
Some highly publicized case examples of the "connection" are:
Albert Disalvo (better known as the Boston Strangler) used to trap dogs and cats as a child and then shoot them with arrows.
Edward Emil Kemper lll was convicted of killing eight women, one of which was his own mother. When he was thirteen yrs. old he would kill neighborhood cats and put their heads on poles. Kemper killed his own cat, decapitated it and then cut it into small pieces. This is the same thing he did to his own mother!
David Berkowitz was convicted of thirteen murders and attempted murders. He used to abuse the neighborhood dogs. He shot one neighbors dog because according to him, the dog was an "evil force" that compelled him to kill.
Ted Bundy was convicted of two murders though he was suspected of at least forty! Bundy used to watch as his own father tortured animals. Eventually, Bundy did the same.
Jeffrey Dahmer showed an intense interest in dismembering animals as a child. As an adult he was charged with murdering and dismembering at least sixteen people.
Andrew Cunanan was the man who killed designer Versace and was suspected in the murders of five other people. Cunanan used to gather crabs and then burn their eyes out with a lighted match. He would watch their eyes sizzle then turn them loose.
Kip Kinkel, 15, allegedly walked into his high school cafeteria and opened fire on his classmates. Friends and family indicated that Kinkel has a history of animal abuse and torture. Friends said that he often bragged about torturing and killing animals.
Seven and 8 year old brothers and an 11 year old friend were arrested for kidnapping, beating and sexually assaulting a 3 year old girl. A local television station reported that the brothers had been involved in animal cruelty.
Mitchell Johnson - 13, and Andrew Golden - 11, allegedly shot and killed four students and one teacher ambushed during a fire drill. A school friend of Golden stated that Andrew "said he shoots dogs all the time with a .22."
Luke Woodham - 16, allegedly stabbed his mother to death. Woodham then allegedly went to his high school where he shot and killed two classmates and injured seven others. Woodham stated in his personal journal that he and an accomplice beat, burned, and tortured his dog, Sparkle, to death. He wrote, "On Saturday of last week, I made my first kill." After brutally beating Sparkle, they set her on fire. The diary continues, "We sprayed fluid down her throat. Her neck caught on fire inside and out. It was true beauty."
Michael Carneal - 14, allegedly shot and killed three classmates at school. According to another student, Carneal talked about throwing a cat into a bonfire.
Rod Ferrell - 17, "vampire cult leader" and cult members Heather Wendorf, 16, Howard Anderson, 17, Dana Cooper, 20, and Charity Keesee, 17, were arrested in connection with the bludgeoning deaths of Wendorf's parents. Media accounts include animal torture and mutilation as part of their rituals.
A 17 year old, along with two 15 year old friends were arrested in the beating death of a 15 year old friend. Officials reported that the older boy had a history of fire starting and animal torture, including an incident at age 11 where he is reported to have thrown a cat in the air until he broke two of its legs.
"Jack," a 16 year old serial sex offender in Cleveland was charged with rape and sexual battery. His other victims reportedly included infants and animals.

Some Chilling Statistics:
The U.S. Bureau of Statistics reported that in 1996 there were 9.1 million violent crimes in the United States.
A 1997 study by the MSPCA and Northeastern University found that 70% of animal abusers had committed at least one other criminal offense and almost 40% had committed violent crimes against people.
A 1986 study reported that 48% of convicted rapists and 30% of convicted child molesters admitted perpetrating acts of animal cruelty in their childhood or adolescence. (Tingle et al, 1986)
A history of animal abuse was found in 25% of aggressive male criminals, 30% of convicted child molesters, 36% of those who assaulted women, and 46% of those convicted of sexual homicide. (Petrovoski, 1997)
Every 15 seconds a woman is battered in the United States (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence).
In three surveys in women's shelters in Wisconsin and Utah in the late 1990s, an average of 74% of pet-owning women reported that a pet had been threatened, injured or killed by the abusers. (Ascione 1995 & 1997 and Quinlisk, 1995)
The Buffalo, NY police department and the SPCA of Erie County found that 1/3 of the residences with animal abuse complaints also had domestic violence complaints. (1998)
A survey of women in a safehouse in Utah found that 20% delayed leaving the abusive situation out of fear that their pet would be harmed. Data currently being collected in Canada found almost 50% delayed leaving. (Ascione, 1997)
The 1995 Utah survey also found that children witnessed the animal abuse in over 60% of the cases and 32% of women reported that one or more of their children hurt or killed a pet.
In 1991 the US Board on Child Abuse and Neglect released a report indicating that more than 2.5 million American children are suffering from abuse and neglect.
A 1983 survey in New Jersey of families reported for child abuse found that in 88% of the families at least one person had abused animals. (Devine, Dickered & Lockwood, 1983)
The New Jersey study also found that in 2/3 of these cases, the abusive parent had injured or killed a pet and in 1/3 of the cases, children were the animal abusers.
A study by the Royal SPCA in Great Britain found that 83% of families with a history of animal abuse had also been identified by social service agencies as at-risk for child abuse or neglect. (Hutton, 1981)
There are people, however, who refute the validity of any of this information and insist that there really is no connection between animal abuse and violence towards humans. That you can't predict that a child who pokes a puppies eyes out will go on to hurt a human when he's bigger and stronger.
What do you think, SodaHeads? Do you feel there is enough evidence to support a link between animal abuse and violence towards humans or is it all just propaganda by the tree-huggers?

U.S. Statistics for ‘Food Animals’ Slaughtered in 2003, available at http://www.cok.net/lit/statis... (9.1 billion animals killed in 2003 for food, not including aquatic animals or animals who died in transit or before slaughter, which would increase the total number killed by 100 million). All you have to do is look at the crime statistics in counties that contain slaughterhouses. Domestic abuse and other violent crimes are higher in those areas. Plus repeated exposure and participation in the killing of animals is known to produce psychological damage similar to soldiers during war time, and a desensitization to death and violence.
I recommend people to read the research done by the Social Science Research Network at this website: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/p... entitled

Unless we admit that killing animals ultimately leads to the justification of killing humans, there can be no distinction between us. The only thing separating our existence from that of an animal is morality. Ahimals aren't concerned with moral behavior, but we are. If we treat animals immorally, then we are simply animals.
If animal abuse was a precursor to serial killing then we all would be dead. Animal abuse cases run into the ten of thousands every year yet only a few serial killers are known to exist.
Serial killers also;
Eat meat and or vegetables,
live in houses,
have parents,
wear clothes,
are normaly caucasion, middle aged males and
are humans.
So by the study if you fall into any of those catagories then you are a serial killer threat.
This doesn't mean we treat animals equally to humans, but punish and monitor those that don't show remorse at hurting animals.
Annecdotes don't prove much.
Torturing animals should be against the law because it's wrong!
