Some countries are taking strides to cut down on smoking by banning it in schools, in the workplace, at bars... But Vietnam just took a giant leap by passing a law that completely bans smoking in public, and outlaws all tobacco advertising. According to Agence-France Press, the law passed by a vote of 440 out of 468, and will go into effect next May. It will be a tough pill to swallow -- about 47.4 percent of Vietnam's male population smokes.
The crackdown is meant to supplement a 2010 ban on smoking in public places like schools and hospitals. Though that ban has been in place for two years now, few pay it mind. The Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance projects that by 2030, tobacco will kill 70,000 people per year in Vietnam if something isn't done to curtail the habit. But is completely banning smoking in public a little too extreme?

For the dangers of smoking: there are plenty of other very dangerous things out there. Weed contains chemicals that affect your mind and body. It's also an object being inhaled into your lungs, something not intended for your body. There's toxins sprayed into the air, toxins put into our food and water. If you eat poultry, you're consuming trace amounts of arsenic and antibiotics...
For second-hand smoke: if radiation can dilute in the Pacific Ocean, smoke can dilute in the air. Each person is different, so is the distance, the amount of consumption and the length of time subjected to it. You're probably not going to get instant cancer if someone is smoking in the park fifty feet from you for five minutes. With the allergy defense, I've known people allergic to marijuana (etc). There are people allergic to peanuts.
We get it, you don't like the smell and don't want to take a chance with something you choose not to do. That might seem reasonable to some people, but where does it end? That is the price of freedom. One day they'll get to something you do like.
(And I'm a non-smoker btw, so don't think I'm biased or anything).
When the incident happened in the restaurant, I did ask the owner to tell that guy to not light up. He did nothing. I mean they are acting like inconsiderate little children who DO need a nanny.
I have to tolerate something that makes me sick? Come on really now.
There is a line, and that line is, when your actions are infringing on another person's freedoms and rights, that's where YOUR freedom ends. Even Dr Paul would say that, in fact I believe he has.
