Vietnam Bans Smoking in Public: Great Idea or Too Extreme?

Some countries are taking strides to cut down on smoking by banning it in schools, in the workplace, at bars... But Vietnam just took a giant leap by passing a law that completely bans smoking in public, and outlaws all tobacco advertising. According to Agence-France Press, the law passed by a vote of 440 out of 468, and will go into effect next May. It will be a tough pill to swallow -- about 47.4 percent of Vietnam's male population smokes.

The crackdown is meant to supplement a 2010 ban on smoking in public places like schools and hospitals. Though that ban has been in place for two years now, few pay it mind. The Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance projects that by 2030, tobacco will kill 70,000 people per year in Vietnam if something isn't done to curtail the habit. But is completely banning smoking in public a little too extreme?

It`s the same level of dictatorship that imposes mass non-white immigration and "assimilation" on ALL white countries and ONLY white countries which is genocide.

and yes , it is also extreme . But smoking is also extremely unhealthy , not only for the smoker himself . I am into everything against smoking . I am a big cigarette hater.

Obesity is a larger health concern than smoking, it cause more disease and death, and often their children are also obese and have diabetes and such, I don't see anyone trying to take away their freedoms or punish them for their habit of eating unhealthy and not exercising and hurting their children. There are too many laws, education and encouragement would be better. Do you hate overweight people too?

They don't harm people sitting with them , the people sitting with them is not being overweight ,too . But a pregnant woman sitting next to a smoker is affected & harmed by the smoker . The name is " smoke " ; emit a cloud of fine particles . To surroundings .

Oh good the social behavior engineers have made it to Vietnam now, I don't even smoke but I just wished the ban fanatics would come out with a guide book to show just how they want each country how to live. Tolerance has left the auditorium along with many other freedoms being taken away all under the banner of "public safety" the seemingly now universal catch phrase.

Bring what on themselves, being jailed for doing something that only affects them? Because the "science" proving that second hand smoke is harmful has all been proven to be junk science

It's effects others. Keep it to yourself and smoke in an enclosed place and suffocate yourself if you wish. I honestly don't care, just don't expose others to it. There are already enough things out there that are being shoved down our throats.

It's banned in some states of India too... I'd just like to add that most of the lower class people in Asia are not educated on this kind of social etiquette. There are lots of social gatherings in these certain Asian countries, unlike America and parts of Europe, and smokers who go to these gatherings just continue to smoke without any regards for the people around them. There are so many people like that in Asia, so it would be next to impossible to educate these people about the same. The best solution is to ban public smoking. It's been done in my hometown too and it's a great relief for non-smokers. I'm not saying that it should be done in other, more developed countries because people over there are more educated on these things.
