Vietnam Bans Smoking in Public: Great Idea or Too Extreme?

Some countries are taking strides to cut down on smoking by banning it in schools, in the workplace, at bars... But Vietnam just took a giant leap by passing a law that completely bans smoking in public, and outlaws all tobacco advertising. According to Agence-France Press, the law passed by a vote of 440 out of 468, and will go into effect next May. It will be a tough pill to swallow -- about 47.4 percent of Vietnam's male population smokes.

The crackdown is meant to supplement a 2010 ban on smoking in public places like schools and hospitals. Though that ban has been in place for two years now, few pay it mind. The Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance projects that by 2030, tobacco will kill 70,000 people per year in Vietnam if something isn't done to curtail the habit. But is completely banning smoking in public a little too extreme?

How about the slime that the FDA allowed in ground meat here? Our children were secretly fed this in public schools. No one has done long term testing of perservative and hormone-laced foods, the horrid living condition of livestock or the many products that don't have to list their ingredients.

I wouldn't care if someone wanted to close themselves in their home - without children - and smoked themselves to death. They'd have to sign a waiver of any organ transplants, too. However, when I walk down the street and have to smell the crappy smell of tobacco smoke coming out of someone's mouth, it's just plain wrong. I think it's a great idea to ban smoking. It sucks.

Smokers bring these things on themselves. If they were more respectful of others people wouldn't push for things like this. Seems to me that smoker's need a "nanny". I am pretty sick and tired of walking down the street on my way to work and having to smell smoke at 6AM everyday. And this is by a hospital! .

Once again... legislating morality never works, and all it does is open a pandoras box for massive unintended consequences that will make the results far far worse the their expectations of passing their so called feel good laws that violate ones personal choice. No matter how hard any state tries to regulate personal choice, it will never be successful and always make things worse. Soon we will be hearing about indefinite detentions and eventually genocide over civil disobedience for standing up for their personal choices. It always eventually comes down to this.

And smokers ARE druggies. Keep your damn smoke to YOURSELF. They have laws against drinking and driving, etc... If someone is in their house and they drink themselves to death WHO CARES? They are NOT hurting anyone but themselves.A smoker, however, is assaulting the lungs and health of another person, which to me is endangering their lives. Do you really want me to take this though a bit further? Ok, I will. If you are endangering another's life, then you need to be arrested. They arrest drunk drivers.

If smokers would be MORE considerate, people WOULD NOT push for laws like these.

Easy... I am referring to something you should be familiar with and its meaning.

" I would rather be exposed to thr inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it."

    ~Thomas Jefferson

For the record I am not a smoker, I would rather have the liberty to choose whether or not I want to be in a place where smokers are, as it is just as easy for people to vacate those premises. I do think it is perfectly fine for public buildings such as hospitals, schools etc.. to ban smoking. But to ban something that people can do in the open with no enclosures, it is as easy for people to make the decision that they can just leave if they do not want to be around it.

Regarding drunk drivers, there is no way to avoid them. There is a way to avoid a smoker. My point is too many laws regarding peoples choices will go far beyond the scope of helpinbg people. Being a RP supporter as my self, you should know this.

I am concerned about this and MY health.

443,000 deaths annually (including deaths from secondhand smoke)
49,400 deaths per year from secondhand smoke exposure

Let them smoke in an enclosed place and not have others have to be endangered by them, there are enough things in life to worry about already. I really don't care if they smoke themselves to death, just don't drag others down with them is all. If they were more considerate then this wouldn't be happening.

As far as being where smokers are, well they are everywhere. At the bus stop, in front of the hospital work at, in front of the gas station hanging out. I mean, I can't walk to work without having my lungs assaulted by smoker's smoke and I am sick and tired of it. After a while you get to a point of like, to hell with them especially since they don't care about others.
Where I wait for the shuttle to go to the parking lot where I park my car, I wanted to sit down on the bench but I couldn't because smokers were sitting there and it even had a NO SMOKING sign. This is in front of the hospital too. The security guard came out and told them all to leave. I mean, it's just right out disrespectful to non-smokers. I mean, I went for breakfast one day at a local place. I sat at the counter and as I was about to start eating, this jerk lit up a cigarette. I mean, what the hell? I asked him to please put it out and he had the worst attitude you ever want to know.

I completely understand your concern, and I am aggrivated by it like you. I used to be a smoker and quit around 4 years ago, so the smoke really bothers me. Fortunately, I don't live in the big city anymore so I am not nearly as exposed as you probably are. It is a very touchy subject and your concerns are definitley justified. My only concern is not necessarily what the law prohibits as much as what doors those laws tend to open. I don't know if there is a right or wrong solution, but I surely don't have any faith in government of any kind to solve these types of disputes.

That appears to be the million dollar question. Along with other bad habits people have and do in public. Maybe carry a bottle of some stink spray and when someone is smoking next to you, spray it in their direction and say you love the smell. LOL They will more than likely leave. I am sorry but I don't really have an answer for you or the smokers. Public designated smoking areas may be the coming solution in the future.. who knows?

You are comparing apples to oranges. If cigarette smokers would have been more polite and considerate from the beginning, we wouldn't have this conversation.

No... I am describing my concern for draconian feel good laws that eventually hurt everyone. If everyone was more considerate, we wouldn't have a lot of things happen in this world. But unfortunately you can't control other people's actions, and asking government to do it for you, disputes the very essence of what liberty means in this country. Back to the quote I reffered to above. What would you rather have? The inconveniences of too much liberty, or attending too small a degree of it. Please re read my comments to Dizzy. I have the same concerns being a non smoker, but I am not about to advocate laws to be passed against specific groups of people.

I don't have to read any of your comments. You lack the ability for common sense. Why don't you put your energy where is belongs. Like with guns, it's not the gun it's the person using it. Same with cigarettes. The rude inconsiderate cigarette smokers are the ones responsible for this. Get over yourself long enough to start telling the smokers to get a clue and stop being so phucking rude and inconsiderate. Who the phuck do they think they are that they can force others to inhale smoke and pollute others hair and clothes with that stench!!!!! Wake up!!!

Then you butt in this conversation, and tell me you don't have to read any of my comments? Smoking is an addiction like a drugs and it kills! Great idea,if the person can't stop smoking, maybe the government need to step in and ban it. If it's ban from everywhere, maybe it will help smokers cut down or stop smoking. "Don't pick up a cigarette children, if you like living,it's bad for your health"!
