The Devil is at work inside the Vatican. At least that's what chief exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth believes. Or at least that the reason he's giving for sins of the Roman Catholic Church. And by sins, I mean sexual abuse, child molestation, homosexual affairs and even murder.
It's an easy explanation, isn't it? Oh, those cardinals and bishops and priests were just giving in to Satan. Actually, they were giving into their own weak desires: lust, greed and cowardice.
Most people know the difference between right and wrong. A grown man, whether he's a priest or a janitor, knows you don't have sex with a child. People have a choice to do the right thing or do the wrong thing.
Sure, there is evil at work in the world. If you believe there is good in the world, then there is evil, too. There has to be a balance or else life in general wouldn't make sense. And to Catholics and Christians, Satan is evil, and God is good. But that old "evil Satan" doesn't make people do things they don't want to do. People choose to do what they want, you know, that pesky free will thing,
Unless, of course, you believe in demon possession, where a demon can take over your body and make you do evil things. Father Amorth would certainly know a thing or two about demon possession as he claims to have experienced 70,000 cases.
I don't profess to know everything there is to know about all things spiritual. But I've certainly seen some pretty scary things in my life that can't be explained. I've seen a 90-pound young woman lift two linebacker-sized men up in the air, while her eyes were rolled in the back of her head and her mouth made an incessant clucking sound. Not sure what to call that, but it definitely wasn't your everyday average normal.
Maybe there are demon-possessed people in the Vatican. Maybe not. But it is easier to believe that the "sins' of the Catholic church are caused by people who have lost their way and have chosen a path of darkness over light.
Instead of blaming Satan for the church's sins, the father should demand justice for the families hurt by the church as well as proper punishment for the ones who've inflicted pain and suffering in the name of the Lord.
Yes, evil is at work in the world, Father Amorth. But don't give Satan all the credit.
By the way, the dear father liked The Exorcist.

A priest (or anyone else, for that matter ) does not just suddenly decide to become a pedophile! Quite the opposite!
However, I do think the catholic church needs to ban all access to children by priests...This would stop the pedophiles from ever becoming priests. Problem solved.
I'm an atheist that was raised Catholic, and I think their is plenty you can criticize about all religions, but the frenzy that people get into concerning the Catholic church is not very even handed, since there is so much corruption and vice in every other type of church as well.
Since this entire piece rests upon these reasons supposedly given by Fr.Armoth-
"Oh, those cardinals and bishops and priests were just giving in to Satan"
And he didn't say them- nor anything like them-
It appears to be just Catholic bashing in general-
something for which I have no stomach.
Sounds like the mentality of a few recent American Presidents; except he's got a better chance of being removed.
Whooie, folks, batten down and buckle up, 'cause it still has a whole lot worse to become before that last great battle at Armeggadon. Couthness, civility, and good old honesty among mankind is politically incorrect, now . . . don't you know? Wake up, wise up, and change your own foolish ways, or rue the day of Judgment yet to come.
Can we stop believing in demons for a while and see what happens? All religion is a lie.
It is the best form of societal control ever invented and it serves its purpose well.
