Utah: 200 Teachers Turn Up For Free Gun Training Following Newtown School Shooting…

Of course if the Dems get their way the teachers won’t have access to anything more powerful than a muzzleloader.

(Reuters) – Kasey Hansen, a special education teacher from Salt Lake City, Utah, says she would take a bullet for any of her students, but if faced with a gunman threatening her class, she would rather be able to shoot back.

On Thursday, she was one of 200 Utah teachers who flocked to an indoor sports arena for free instruction in the handling of firearms by gun activists who say armed educators might have a chance at thwarting deadly shooting rampages in their schools.

The event was organized by the Utah Shooting Sports Council in response to the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, this month that killed 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The council said it has typically attracted about 16 teachers each year to its concealed carry training courses. But Thursday’s event near Salt Lake City, organized especially for educators in the aftermath of Newtown, drew interest from hundreds, and the class was capped at 200 for space limitations.

“I feel like I would take a bullet for any student in the school district,” Hansen, a special education teacher in a Salt Lake City school district, told Reuters after the training session.

“If we should ever face a shooter like the one in Connecticut, I’m fully prepared to respond with my firearm,” she said, adding that she planned to buy a weapon soon and take it to work. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/28/us-usa-guns-teacher...

Teachers are NOT security guards. They shouldn't be relied on to protect our kids.

I'm glad that training was offered free, and these BS gun-free school zones are being lifted in some places.

Teachers aren't security guards, it's true--but neither are home-owners. :) The fortitude of any given individual to act does matter, but I think your intuition is correct that the deterrent effect of losing the victim disarmament zones is the most important. Unfortunately for us who argue this view, we don't have the mind-reading ability to count the events that never happen. We just know they're there by comparing statistics for the two situations, which of course support our view.

Actually, home owners have to be their own security guards, unless they hire others for their own security.

The police don't have to come when you call 911.

The government has no duty to protect you. Police officers can only enforce laws after they are broken, and may take too long to come and rescue you from the person breaking into your house. Thought crime doesn't exist - so thinking about hurting you is not illegal, but doing it is, and you can only arrest people after they've hurt you, or after they've tried to hurt you and someone stopped them.

Right there with ya, man. My point-of-view is that teachers (and every adult else) are in the same situation--that of being the security guard for their immediate vicinity. Some folks choose not to act on this responsibility. They are at personal liberty to do so because everyone has a right to choose their own approach to risk. And they're at practical liberty to do so when they're in the company of other individuals who do exercise their rights--and criminals don't know which are which.

With regard to the point that police officers are (legitimately) reactors and not proactors, I agree 100% there, too. Not only would the attempt to prevent crime by watching and fore-judging people be an ineffectual waste, it would turn the country into a giant prison.

If the crazies learn more people are armed and dangerous they are less likely to act on their craziness. Hmm.... maybe that is what needs to be shown to Washington, we are more than willing to defend our rights and families.

Great idea as long as the teacher carries well concealed and very securely and never tells any students that she packing heat.

When I got my concealed handgun license in Texas, I was told that was a felony. I think they've since changed that law, but still - you're right, that's not how you carry a gun responsibly.

It works for me. But the question is, will they use the gun when needed.? It seems that these tragedies are only committed in Gun Free Zones, as prescribed by the Progressives. The way I look at it, is that if your trained and authorized to carry, concealed or otherwise. And your implementing your 2nd Amendment Rights, they you should be able to carry anyplace you like, withing common sense reason. Such as common sense would tell the law abiding that you don't carry into a bar, police station, or jail, or a court room. And maybe a bank.

awesome. all teachers should be trained in anti-terrorism tactics and pack a gun. it's the world we live in. we won't protect our own but we will give Egypt all the firepower they desire.

IIRC, The first target at Sandy Hook was the office where several faculty members attempted to tackle and subdue the gunman. All failed, but if one had a gun, then he/she could have shot him and fewer people would have died. It's not 100% certain (sometimes the bad guys win no matter how well armed the good guys are), but the chances of survival are significantly greater.

Nothing wrong with teachers learning to use guns, but a better solution has to be trained and armed security officers in the schools, and not just visible ones.
A security force of armed plain clothes retired police officers that rotate through the schools and are alert to any threats or potential violence would be better.
Teachers should be teaching, and it is more likely that a teacher with a weapon would put it in a locked drawer in her purse rather than have it available. That would also make the gun a target for some students to see if they can steal it.

Why not have a plain clothed armed guard monitor a double entrance way. At the first door is a metal detector. If it's activated second doors can not open. Always maintaining the ability to exit. This way no gun gets in. And no guns are stored there either.
Who's to say an unbalanced teacher won't go bananas on us one day.
