USA: Should church and state remain separate?

It is widely known that Rick Santorum stated that President Kennedy's speech about separating church and state made him feel like he was "going to throw up." Should America keep religion out of government? Should God be taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance?

intermixing the two would be a horrible, horrible idea ... when another religion becomes the majority religion, the rest of us would be totally screwed ...
