US War On Drugs Loosens: Should Kerlikowske be fired?

Roger May 14, 2009 20:04:30

The White House Drug Czar, Gil Kerlikowske, wants to loosen the "War on Drugs." The new drug czar thinks that calling it a "war" on drugs makes people thinks it's a war on them. The Obama administration wants to take a different approach on drugs; they want to focus on treatment of the issue, not incarceration. HOW? The drug administration also said that authorities would no longer be doing drug raids on medical-marijuana shops where it's legal.

I think the term "War on Drugs" was one of the first steps towards "Newspeak" that we, as a nation, have suffered.

It wasn't a "war," it was a policy.

As a policy, it's been a dismal failure preventing the importation and distribution of "drugs" and a social disaster.

It's "high" time the nation as a while looked at this policy deeply and we worked towards a consensus.

    Happy

The war on drugs is more profitable for the govt. because of the forfiture laws, you know get caught with some weed or something else they take your money, if you are in a car they will take your car, if you are in your house they will take your house. So the war on some drugs will continue.

I have a better plan that has benefits for other problems.
Legalize pot and coke and we create a huge tax revenue stream and save tens of millions in waste trying to stop the unstoppable. Let if operate just like cigarettes and alcohol. Legalizing coke can lower the obesity in the country.

Ever since the Nixon administration began the "war on drugs" the more money we tax payers have put into these programs the more drugs there are and the drugs have become more potent and deadly. Stop fueling this ridiculousness by supporting failed programs that only make the problems worse. Stop putting pot growers in prison and allowing the corrupt bankers who have been laundering the drug cartels' money since the beginning to go free. If you really want to see a difference in drug crime start hanging the bankers and you'll see a reduction in the drug flow in every country not just ours. Further, alcohol is still the drug of choice and deadliest drug in America we all should have learned more from prohibition, if there's a market for it and legitimate business people are not allowed to market it then a black market always emerges to push the desired product bringing crime and death and destruction with it. It's time to approach this subject with an effective remedy not more of the same failed policies.

Recently Portugal decriminalized all drugs. The result has been less crime, lower teen use, fewer new AIDS cases and more people entering drug treatment. The Taliban is making a fortune off of heroin. The South American drug cartels are making a fortune off of cocaine. Somebody seriously needs to come up with some new ideas because the old ones aren't working.

The hardest thing about the war on drugs is there are tons of inmates in prison who are in there because of drug related charges. I think we should do rehab programs for those busted for drugs, and place them in facilities who are like prisons but they are there to sober up. O and legalize Marijuana. Just control it like controlling Alcohol, where you have to have a license to sell it and be of age like 18 or 21, and have repercussions if get pulled over, and such.

The war on drugs is a war on our civil liberties. Drug use hasn't changed in the last 40 years and high school kids have no problem getting pot. HELLO!!!! No matter what your view on drugs, this war on drugs obviously isn't working. End the BS and start trying to educate people.

Demand for illegal drugs is the driving force behind the problem; without attacking demand, there will always be enterprising souls willing to supply it.

As a person of color I seen my where I lived changed from a nice clean area to a drug den in the 70's and my friends turn dope heads and die. I seen people I never seen before come in to the area where I lived and destroy it, and the police come in and arrest and beat people for no reason and people getting shot young and old, going in the grave. And to hear the white people on T.V. saying that the black people was the blame for the drugs, no we are not. Because the people of color didn't have the money to go to other countries where the drugs where made, my mother and the other people in the area where I lived only made about $200.00 every two weeks or less and a house filled with children to care for. When we got our civil rights that when the drugs came in where we lived. the goverment had something to do with it. and they can stop it, but as long as they have the same people in office fighting drugs, drugs will always be in America. They know when the drugs come in and they know when they are sold and they know who has the money. When there is a drug bust in a state or county, the police department gets new car and equipment and new building go up in that city or state, open your eyes and look for the new stuff.
