U.S. lawmakers unanimously passed a bill that will require the Obama administration to design and implement strategies to address the violence perpetuated by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and invest in the reconstruction and reconciliation of northern Uganda.
The "Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery" bill addresses the humanitarian need to intercept the LRA, a Ugandan rebel group led by Joseph Kony that have infamously abducted over 30,000 children, forcing them to become LRA soldiers. The group is additionally identified by their reign of attacks in Iganda, the DR Congo, South Sudan and the Central African Republic. The bill gives the Obama administration 180 days to produce a comprehensive strategy that coalesces multilateral and regional partners to capture top LRA leaders, demobilize child soldiers and protect civilians from rebel attacks; and invest in sustainable peace efforts.
Co-sponsored by Republican and Democrat representatives, the "LRA Disarmament and Northern Ugandan Recovery Act" is the most widely supported legislation focused on sub-Saharan Africa in modern American history. The $20 million bill, awaiting President Barack Obama's signature, was passed with a unanimous vote, a rare and momentous victory for human rights activists.

+3Why? Please support your opinion!reply - Becca 2010/05/15 03:05:51The "Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2...i think it is definitely beneficial, obviously for the people of uganda. people may think i am too young to be discussing this, but just because i am young does not mean i don't have a valid opinion. the people of uganda have been suffering for years because of stupid decisions made on the part of many. they used to be prosperous and have fertile land, but that was taken away from them by their government. while this is a noble effort by the people of our government on the behalf of the ugandans, this will be very sacrificial for us, considering the current economic and military state we are in, thanks for reading :)reply
- Swany 2010/05/14 23:41:49I think the "Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery ...We should have been helping for a long time. But the fact is we will soon not be able to help ourselves. The spill that kills will show no mercy. For us and perhaps for the world there is no other issue right now.reply

+4who cares about this place? are you serious! what the hell is wrong with you! I care about this place, millions of people care about "this place", i call it my second home and so do many others! How dare you refer to the killing, mutilation, torturing, raping and mass murdering of fellow human beings as "fun and games"!!!! How dare you demean the importance of a group of people, i call family! The ugandan people need our help in ridding themselves of joseph kony and the lra. Educate yourself before you make such rash comments, please! I am embarrassed to call you a fellow american.reply - Dagon Lucy 2010/05/25 19:49:14

+3wat kind of sico r u this is not fun and games this is death and starvation and suffering and terror how would u feel if u were one suffering in the hands of the LRA HUH???????reply - Godweiser 2010/05/14 20:43:53I think the "Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery ...+1Needs to include a provision for napalming Joseph Kony, otherwise, you're just giving him time to recover and start up again. Kony has to die, it's that simple. Preferably, the leadership of the LRA gets decapitated. There's little support for these guys; most of their army is kidnapped children who have been brainwashed into the fighting.reply
