When the election of 2012 comes around, it may not be the economy which decides the outcome as an American soldier has killed up to 16 Afghan civilians without cause. The soldier served up to three tours in Iraq and this was his first tour in Afghanistan.
President Obama has acted quick to apologize for the murders but following the incident of US soldiers burning copies of the Koran last month, the Afghan people are not accepting this.
The Taliban is swearing revenge and nationwide support for the Taliban has now grown to an almost all time high since the war began as the Afghan people want the United States out of Afghanistan.
NATO has sworn to get to the bottom of this as the accusations were that a group of US soldiers were drunk and opened fire on the civilians then doused the bodies with a flammable liquid and set them on fire.
If these events are true as reported, then the one soldier in custody would be a scapegoat used by the US government to try reducing the level of the crime as it clearly is saying only one soldier was involved which does not fit the reports by numerous eyewitnesses.
As this is taking place, polls in the US reveal that like Vietnam, the majority of Americans are now in favor of a US pullout and opposed to the US being in Afghanistan. Also like Vietnam, we have a US President in power whose supporters, by in large, thought he was going to remove our forces from a foreign conflict we were told by our government was necessary and we were winning.
It is increasingly clear and proven that the US presence in Afghanistan is feeding support for our enemies and that should Obama pull out US troops in 2014, President Obama has guaranteed the Taliban will regain control over Afghanistan with the US pullout meaning there is no longer any justification for keeping our troops there.
The issue with Obama is he won the Nobel Peace Prize and almost everyone expected him to begin a pullout but instead he escalated the war in Afghanistan... exactly like Nixon did in Vietnam. The parallels with Nixon's Presidency does not end there as cries for Nixons impeachment were already present before he won re election... then came Watergate and Nixon left office.
The bulk of support for Obama in the Afghanistan War are extreme leftwing Democrats and Neocon Republicans.
It's time for withdrawal, to turn the situation over entirely to NATO and bring our soldiers home before reprisals for these murders explode as the Afghan President wants a public trial and any effort to deny a trial by the Afghan government itself will cause this already horrible situation to explode.
For Obama supporters, if you don't demand the US pullout of Afghanistan take place now before the election, rather than the pull down of troops he sent there after being elected, you will likely see this issue be the issue which kills his re election campaign because while they are relatively silent... millions of Americans who opposed the Afghanistan War under Bush and who vocally hoped Obama would end the war will not vote to re elect him.
Maybe Obama didn't start the war in Afghanistan but the democrats supported the war effort and no amount of blaming Bush will get Obama out of this.
Pullout of Afghanistan... end US involvement in the war and put NATO in command over an international effort to fix this mess that has only gotten worse since Obama became President.
Then there's Syria and Iran to worry about.
