United Nations says US should return stolen land to Indian tribes?

~ The Rebel ~ 2012/05/05 15:49:02

UN's correspondent on indigenous peoples urges government to act to combat 'racial discrimination' felt by Native Americans

A United Nations investigator probing discrimination against Native Americans has called on the US government to return some of the land stolen from Indian tribes as a step toward combatting continuing and systemic racial discrimination.

James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, said no member of the US Congress would meet him as he investigated the part played by the government in the considerable difficulties faced by Indian tribes.

Anaya said that in nearly two weeks of visiting Indian reservations, indigenous communities in Alaska and Hawaii, and Native Americans now living in cities, he encountered people who suffered a history of dispossession of their lands and resources, the breakdown of their societies and “numerous instances of outright brutality, all grounded on racial discrimination”.

When did Panetta say that? And how Did the UN receive the authority to make decisions on peace and war?

this has been well known for months. ever since Libya. Mr constitutional law expert has figured out that the constitution really doesn't mean anything and he can do as he wants... haven't you seen that yet?

aaaand we would listen to the U.N. ...why?

If Obama did listen to them, and it's 50/50 that he does at this point! (I'm also thinking he will listen especially if they promise him a dictatorship), I suggest we all head south to Mexico since they don't mind coming here uninvited..that is of course after tearing down our homes and all infrastructure, gardens, farm lands etc, oh, and level all cities. They can start from scratch!

All you Americans who are in disagreement with the UN in reference to giving back "stolen land" are hereby requested to to speak up for Israelis on the same issue. In reference to Israelis they truly are the indigenous people of their region.I know you Americans go back to the Pilgrims but the Pilgrams did arrive by boat long after the Native Indian population. In any case this is your chance to back the truth for Israel. If you do not you are hypocrites.

If we go back far enough, every country now in existance, took their land from someone else, but it is my personal belief that the land belongs to those born and raised on it in the present, not the past.

Suppressed history tells of slavery, rape, murder, cannibalism, etc. amongst the Indians.

Hollywood and revisionist history tells us that they were all peaceful and just talked to the wind while the white man destroyed them.

    Regardless of who says it,

It's a nice thought, and all things considered,

MIGHT be a step in the right direction, in terms of racial descrimination...

Whether it's feasible, it this point, I'm not so sure, and may be harmful on the whole ~

Encouragement to the recovery of Native American Cultures, lest it vanish, completely,

needs to happen in some way, shape or form though, as we will suffer greatly without it...

well they don't have an official military so they can only help out in small more local ways, When the UN wants to go to war they ask NATO but NATO isn't always willing so the corrupt regimes of africa can't really be stopped by the UN personally.

Then let's not say the UN accomplishes a damn thing towards keeping the peace even when they send in UN Troops. The world can do without the UN just like it did the League of Nations. Another Progressives failure.

Well if the UN had established a military branch recruiting soldiers from all the member countries then it might be more powerful, they still have sanctions that hurt Iran's economy you know.

sanctions have led to the demise of Ahmedinejad. He's out of favor and will be gone in 2013. The other contenders are even worse than he is and more in favor of religious control of the govt whereas Ahmed. tried to lessen the grip of the mullahs on govt. The price of basic foodstuffs has skyrocketed since sanctions began and the people are getting ready to revolt.
