Could the National Education Association (NEA) be Losing the Battle over TENURED, BAD Teachers?

the NEA .. for the FIRST TIME .. during its Association Meeting (4 July 2011)
The REALITY .. the NEED ... to have ..
"evidence of student learning .. considered in the evaluations of school teachers around the country"

(Link to an articlein re: Gauging Teacher Performance in NY State)
http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2011/05/30/testing-stude...

HOWEVER .. the NEA also made this STATEMENT As well ..
Clearly they are OPPOSED to using EXISTING Standardized Test Scores to Evaluate Teachers ..

(These are the words of Becky Pringle, Secretary-Treasurer of the NEA) ..
-- “N.E.A. is and always will be opposed to high-stakes, test-driven evaluations,”

AND .. interestingly enough .. the NEA during this 4th of July Weekend ...
(Quote from the Article itself)
-- "challenging the Obama administration’s promotion of charter schools and high-stakes standardized testing"
-- Spent time "... trying to close ranks and encouraging even those union members who are furious at those policies to embrace calls for change — if on their own terms"

OF COURSE .. we have the RHETORIC .. finger-pointing from BIDEN's Appearance at this NEA Conference too ..
(the usual /blame-game/ .. rhetoric)
“There is an organized effort to place the blame for the budget shortfall squarely on the shoulders of teachers and other public workers, and it is one of the biggest scams in modern American history,”
(Wonder if anyone has EVER pointed out to BIDEN the DEFINITION of BUDGET .. and why you should NOT MAX out the Credit Cards?)

Links to the Articles ..

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/05/us/05teachers.html?_r=1

NOTE THIS point of CONTENTION ... from TEACHER Members before accepting the /new/ policy as is ...
-- "Some teachers also balked at another section of the policy — the proposal that failing teachers be given only one year to improve, instead of the standard two"

Begs the question .. would ANY OTHER Profession give someone TWO YEARS to actually Perform BEFORE they are FIRED for Incompetence, Criminal Activity, Dereliction of Duty or any Misconduct?

A tragic failure of American education in this century has been a failure to teach children how to read and write and how to express themselves in a literary form. For the educational system this may not be too distressing. As we shall see later, their prime purpose is not to teach subject matter but to condition children to live as socially integrated citizen units in an organic society - a real life enactment of the Hegelian absolute State. In this State the individual finds freedom only in obedience to the State, consequently the function of education is to prepare the individual citizen unit for smooth entry into the organic whole.

However, it is puzzling that the educational system allowed reading to deteriorate so markedly. It could be that The Order wants the citizen components of the organic State to be little more than automated order takers; after all a citizen who cannot read and write is not going to challenge The Order. But this is surmise. It is not, on the basis of the evidence presently at hand, a provable proposition.

In any event, the system adopted the look-say method of learning to read, originally developed for deaf mutes. The system has produced generations of Americans who are functionally illiterate. Yet, reading is essential for learning and learning is e...

Yet, reading is essential for learning and learning is essential for most occupations. And certainly those who can read or write lack vocabulary in depth and stylistic skills. There are, of course, exceptions. This author spent five years teaching at a State University in the early 1960s and was appalled by the general inability to write coherent English, yet gratified that some students had not only evaded the system, acquired vocabulary and writing skills, but these exceptions had the most skepticism about The Establishment.

It chaps my butt when they raise an almost valid point

I agree two years is too long to give them to raise their performance scores, but the kids are tested only once a year, so it is difficult to really gauge if they are improving

So ,my solution is test the kids once a week like we did when I was in school. (may require occasional homework on part of child)

Notice this may also require teachers to grade homework assignments, and in order to accommodate this, I would have no issue about furnishing the teachers RED INK PENS in order to correct inaccurate answers.

This way teachers would have almost immediate feedback as to their levels of incompetence

YES! Great suggestion .. Weekly Homework assignments, Quizzes, Tests .. (all things that we used to require of students decades ago).

The Nea is completely funded by our tax dollars. We have Zero say in what they do. They take those tax dollars and use them to expand their power and push their agenda. Teaching our children At the bottom of their priorities.
    It should be defunded.

Others benefitting from NEA funding, according to the most recent filings, include Jesse
Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, Center for American Progress, Media Matters for America,

National Council of La Raza, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Amnesty International, the now-defunct ACORN,[45] and AIDS Walk Washington.[8]

It isn't a surpise that NEA takes the wrong tact on any question. They've backed mostly liberal progressives and have that bleeding-heart, any excuse will do approach to everything. I've been in education for many years and NEVER joined NEA because I have disagreed with them philosophically and politically.

The worst part of the the NEA is the Unions and tenure. The best part is--well I can't think of one yet--but I will get back to you!

The educational system in the United States is a disgrace. All due to the National Education Association (NEA) and the National Labor Relation Board. Both are government agencies and lead by socialist extremists. Get the federal government out of the individual state pockets and business. Get back to the basics of the constitution.

Take some time to spend with your children. No teacher can replace that.

hmm.... so they are against standardized testing... exactly what kind of testing are they willing to accept?

As for the 2 year chance to improve, why would any teacher who is confident in their ability to teach have a problem with that, seems to me the only ones would complain about that are those who expect to fail or doubt their own ability to teach and those teachers shouldnt be teaching in the first place.

I don't blame teachers, I realize we all have to make a living wage, but the unions that swarm towards them, and state workers have to face the fact that money isn't there to fund the nice retirements of these people ,and default is very possible ,resulting in lawsuits ,and possible bankruptcy. I feel the retirements should be frozen at this point ,like many private corporations have done ,and 401K's started, with reasonable steps toward retirement ,not giving raises like mad in the last years to get a bigger check at the end. We must all face the problem head on, before things get to the point of no return.

You got it, just look at the mid east, where most of the population learns from the religious leaders ,and all they learn is to hate others. I said before that this is dumbing down, like many others have said ,and it must stop here ,and the public unions have to learn like the private union sector has found, that overreach is not feasable.

Not every union blindly protects its members against any reasonable policy for continuing education, training, and discipline. Consider the Air Line Pilots' Association. if the NEA behaved like professionals, they wouldn't be losing so many battles.

Without Ritalin they are dead in the water. They have gone from teaching to behavioral modification and political indoctrination and activism. They have to commit fraud to continue their shill. Most couldn't pass their own curriculum.

As for their Union, and all Unions, it's time to end their tax exemption. They are heavy institutional investors, or should I say Speculators that disrupt the natural workings of a free market economy. They invest heavily in many Corporations, enough to have significant voting rights, and then rail against these corporations. Unions are nothing more than Hedge Funds or Corporate holding companies, with political party subsidiaries for their political activism. Their investments in Derivatives,, Mortgage Backed securities and many other high risk investments led to their pension funds having to bailed out with the stimulus package.

They are nothing but Corporations, should have to pay taxes and fall under the jurisdiction of the Securities and Exchange commission. If they loose on their investments, maybe the rank and file need to be more careful who the select to run their union, and the loss should be their loss alone.
