For those unfamiliar with me, I'm a city letter carrier for the USPS. We have a custodian, a young guy in his 30's, that is allowed up to 10 days a month to just not show up. We have an automated call-in system that we use to call in to work and he doesn't have to use that either. Our office took him as a transfer to keep him from being fired at the plant that he was working at. His mother is good friends with one of our supervisors and she let him transfer. Our custodians make over $50k a year and have specific areas to clean. If it isn't your area, forget it, you don't need to pick up a piece of trash there!

We have another carrier that just misses a week here and there and is allowed to call in under FMLA two days a month. I'm no longer a union member because they do allow this kind of abuse. The unions always protect the weakest link!

I am very ready for unions to be a thing of the past - thanks for sharing this story. I see it is as bad as I thought it was.

I worked to get an GS employee fried for not following proper proceedures for handling classified material, it took 2 years! Thanks to their Union.

Wow! It galls me that the USPS keeps losing money while raising postal rates, with mind-numbing regularity! At the same time, they want to curtail Saturday delivery. This is a good example of government (in)efficiency, and they want to manage health care!!!

The USPS is a much different place than when my Dad worked there doing the same as you (1968-1994). H was also unimpressed with the Union.

I know of union factory workers that for years punched the clock in at one factory and then got in a company golf cart and drove across town to work at a completely unrelated factory all day, garnering paychecks from both places.

True, I know one factory that they worked an hour, sat in a break room for an hour and alternated for eight hours. They worked 10 to 12 hour shifts so they worked 5-6 hours, were paid 8 straight pay and all the rest was overtime. The only way they could get out of that union contract was to shut the factory down, so that's what happened. So the union got them some great benefits and then it got them unemployed!

Unions, who once had a place in society as a protector of the average worker, is now just addicted to the narcotic of power!

They have lost their way, thus the approbation of their members.

Why should I quit because some losers game the system and the union endorses it? Who would do the work if I, and others like me, quit?

Not true.
It was social pressure that got child labor laws passed in the 1800s....BEFORE all the unions.
People did not work on Sundays because of religious beliefs, not because the union said so. It was that way up to the 1960s.
Taking too much credit.
Read a history book.

70 years ago - we can throw up a statue, thank them for the labors laws and end the dinosaurs because they are not necessary any longer. And, before you start the 'what if evil business treats people badly again'; we can start a union in under 10 min via all the communications we have now. They are now useless blood suckers killing the economy

Thanks, Jackie, I'm not really worried about them. The really funny thing is that my shop steward, a woman, hates my guts but her husband who was the president of our union, still really likes me. He had a heart attack and I sent him a card and he called and personally thanked me and I don't think she had a clue.

LOL, I work more than 40 hours, I work Saturdays, my safety is in my hands, and I hope to God Democrats don't destroy my pension but they're really working hard at it.
