The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights has warned Americans not to elect Republican Mitt Romney in next month’s presidential election, saying that doing so would be “a democratic mandate for torture.”

The UN’s Ben Emmerson was referring to Romney’s refusal to rule out the use of waterboarding in interrogating terror detainees, a practice that President Barack Obama has ended.

Colin Perkel of The Canadian Press reported Emmerson’s remarks from a symposium in Toronto on the impact of 9/11 on human rights:

"The re-introduction of torture under a Romney administration would significantly increase the threat levels to (Americans) at home and abroad," Emmerson said.

"Such a policy, if adopted, would expose the American people to risks the Obama administration is not currently exposing them to."

Your Sodaheadline is a flagrant fabrication, courtesy of Breitbart.com. Nowhere does your Canadian Press source indicate that Ben Emmerson, UN special rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights warned Americans not to elect Mitt Romney. FYI: A "rapporteur" is merely "a person appointed by a committee to prepare reports of meetings or carry out an investigation" (see http://www.thefreedictionary.... ).

It merely indicated that "Emmerson, took fierce aim at the Republican candidate's refusal to condemn waterboarding." There is NO "do not elect Mitt Romney" warning, as falsely claimed in your Sodaheadline!

Your Canadian source reported: "There is no doubt that the Romney administration would be able to claim — in the event of a Romney presidency — a democratic mandate for torture," Emmerson told The Canadian Press. "That would put Romney as the first world leader in history to be able to claim a democratic mandate for torture."

Emmerson said he planned to raise his concerns in an address to the UN General Assembly later this month. (See http://ca.news.yahoo.com/romn... ). By misrepresenting EMMERSON'S criticism of Romney's waterboarding position as a UNITED NATIONS warning not to elect Romney, you have dishonestly created a "straw man":

"A straw man, also known in the UK as an Aunt Sally,[1][2] is a type of argument and is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position.[3] To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.[3][4]" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

By misrepresenting a United Nations investigator's CRITICISM as a United Nations WARNING, you and Breitbart add to the conservative disinformation campaign against the United Nations. There are warnings from different people stating not to vote for either of these two men, for various reasons. People might regret voting for Romney, but it isn't like the other choice is much better. I'm observing at the moment.

Not me! I know which candidate is the more dangerous one. No one could pay me enough to vote for Obama under any circumstances. I see him as a greater danger to our nation than the UN and al Quada are.

There lies the problem; if that is the case, then why is the race between Romney and Obama? I would think the American people to be smarter after Bush/Obama and vote outside of the establishment's choices. I personally believe most people including the ones on the post are all talk. The same thing people stated after Bush, they are stating now with Obama.

I'm just going to keep doing non bias research and see if my inclinations are right.

I asked why was the race between Obama and Romney; why did you vote for Romney? The comment was garnered towards the American public perception of the two candidates.

Why did I vote for Romney? Is that what you want to know? Answer is: I did not vote for Romney. If your question is why was the race between Romney and Obama, the answer is because the 2 major parties have a strangle hold on every election, making it virtually impossible for anyone NOT of their party to have a chance. And furthermore, it will be that way until all of us are dead because the American public is too chicken to challenge the two major parties.

    “a democratic mandate for torture.”....

HAHAHAHAHAHA !!!! the irony of that statement is....well....reeking of IRONY....

I find it hilarious that the lefty progressive libs find 'waterboarding' soooo offensive...

    waterboarding

The idea of 'torture' is based on NOT killing them....and getting information...

But the progressive libs have no problem with 'drone strikes'...

    drone strikes

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has counted as many as 884 civilian deaths – including 176 children – in PAKISTAN ALONE as a result of U.S. drone use, which counters the government’s claims that drones are a precise tool that allows for minimum “collateral damage.” And a recent report by researchers at Stanford and NYU found strong evidence of “double tapping,” or drones firing on civilian rescuers following an initial strike on certain targets, in Pakistan.

I believe the left's thinking is akin to a wimp hiring a hit man - he wants somebody dead, is too weak himself to kill him himself, HATES the idea of killing, BUT if he can CLAIM he didn't personally do the killing, then all is well. IOW, do all the evil in the world, but have a fall guy handy to blame for doing your deeds.

I guess that I'm more in favor of standing up for my principles & having integrity & seeing what comes of that.

But walking around the world saying that we're better while acting as or more disgustingly all the time (& not just waterboarding) does not make one any friends out & about. It creates more enemies, which, in turn, puts more people in danger... plus, it's been proven that waterboarding & other torture techniques are not very effective.

That's a false dichotomy you're setting up. You can't prove at all that the information gained by waterboarding couldn't have been obtained in another way.

We don't have to waterboard people to save our own lives.

Beyond that, you can't protect American ideals by undermining them.

"you can't protect American ideals by undermining them." IF you are a member of the Democrat Party, if you support their policies, if you vote for their corrupt leaders, you have no moral authority to even say what you said. Democrats of today haven't a clue what "American ideals" are.

Both parties have done their share of undermining American ideals and values. Both are in the wrong for having done so.

I'm neither either, but I understand sometimes one cannot exist solely on sugar. I understand there are other ways of obtaining information, but when there is every reason under the sun to think an attack is imminent, it is folly to try to prove that point. We KNOW we are better than them, waterboarding or not. At least I know that - I don't have to prove it over and over and over at the expense of innocent American lives. That is what I mean when I say waterboarding is acceptable to me when it is necessary to save American lives - and I'll stick to that. If one's goal in life is to "feel good", that's O.K., but the contortions one has to go through to arrive at that conclusion when there is imminent threat is deadly. That is my thinking. Yes, both parties are guilty of all sorts of corruption, illegalities, lying, extortion, misleading, and malfeasance of office. I support neither, but when it comes to sacrificing American lives that could be saved by waterboarding one of the attackers for quick information, I'd do it in a heartbeat and I'd never feel guilt about it.

Let me ask you something in all sincerity.

Why did we try the Japanese for waterboarding American POWs during WWII if it's ok to do it? Why was it horrible torture when they did it back then, but acceptable for us to do it now?

Using the term "War on Terror" to permit torture is dishonest. Why is it that every other nation has its feet held to the fire but ours is exempt from the Geneva Conventions & other international courts? We are not building trusting relationships with our policies abroad.
Who the hell wants to be involved in wars all the time? Why do we think we have to push buttons & encourage war?

When we're in a legal war, declared by Congress, we still need to abide by our own values... or we lose our very justification for going to war in the first place.

The thing is, if someone is being tortured, it's been found to typically only firm the person's resolve. Whereas, other tactics have been shown to produce far more & quicker results.
I don't know why so many people are so insistent on using tactics that are proven not to be as effective as others. It doesn't make a lick of sense to me.
