UFO? Meteorite? Mork from Ork? What landed in Namibia? Early Christmas presents accidentally dropped by Santa Claus? Nobody seems to know -- or at least nobody has said it publicly.
A large metallic ball fell out of the sky on a remote grassland in Namibia, prompting baffled authorities to contact NASA and the European space agency.

Locals had heard several small explosions a few days beforehand, he said.
With a diameter of 35 centimetres (14 inches), the ball has a rough surface and appears to consist of "two halves welded together".
It was made of a "metal alloy known to man" and weighed six kilogrammes (13 pounds), said Ludik.

I don't think alien life has visited Earth. I don't believe in Area 51 conspiracy theories. I don't humans in our lifetime will ever have contact with intelligent life from other planets... but this has people puzzled. It doesn't look "organic" or "natural" (if one can use those words about outer space).

Maybe some Earthlings made this 'space ball' and it didn't really come from space.

Scientists said they've seen other space balls hit Earth over the past twenty years. This particular ball landed in Namibia in November, but scientists tested it before announcing it publicly. That rules out the Santa Claus dropped gift theory.

The space ball 'poses no danger' according to the scientists. They say it has a hard shell of an unknown alloy but an empty inside.

Share your thoughts on how this got here, who/what made it, and what we should do with it.

(or you can read what "real scientists" think here: spoiler warning)

Looks like the liquid helium tank used to pressurize the fuel or oxidizer tanks, or drive pump turbines, in liquid fuel rockets. Usually you find them near the bottom of the rocket, between rocket's combustion chamber and the first fuel or oxidizer tank. They are made of materials that could survive a reentry into the atmosphere, especially if it they are empty.

It looks like debris but who can say whether it's something that we sent up and that has now fallen back to Earth or that it's something that's been traveling through space for eons and just happened to end up here. Just read the "spoiler alert" so it's probably from us to us.

I really don't know but I have no doubt we have been visited to think we are the only living beings in a universe that has no end to me is being very simple minded
  • Soundstorm william... 2011/12/23 04:40:43
    Soundstorm
I tend to believe it's simple minded to assume the probability that any life that exists among the stars would be technologically advanced enough and willing to go through the tremendous expense and peril to jettison any of their representatives on what is likely a one way trip to our remote and isolated planet for any logical reason. I'm not saying it's impossible of course. But if you were an inhabitant of a planet way out there what would it be worth to you to sacrifice your life there to come all the way to our world?

    Its called exploration
  • Soundstorm william... 2011/12/23 22:27:50
    Soundstorm
We've not talking about something that has a reasonable possibility of a return on investment as exploration was in the tranquil globally warm times of Leif Erikson.
  • william... Soundstorm 2011/12/23 22:44:38
    william raggett
I understand that but it is just natural thing to want to know. Why did we risk lives and took some to go to the moon. You don't know either if space travel maybe a very simple thing to someone with advanced technology but it isn't worth arguing about that is just my thoughts on the matter
  • Soundstorm william... 2011/12/23 23:10:48
    Soundstorm
Then again, most reasonable people don't consider curiosity something worth getting yourself killed over. Which is pretty much why I consider aliens explorers to our far flung world to be highly improbable. It's mostly just a fun mythology for people to indulge in and was a comforting distraction especially in the 1950s when there was mass anxiety over the likelihood of nuclear annihilation.

Thats fine but it doesn't change what i believe. It doesn't bother me that others don't
