Angie Zapata, who was born as Justin Zapata, was beaten to death by 32-year-old Allen Andrade after coming to him as a transgender. Allen Andrade is being charged with first degree murder, a bias-motivated crime, car theft, and identity theft.

Allen Andrade's trial is among the first implementing a new hate-crime law in Colorado. Colorado is one of the few states that has gender identity protection in its hate-crime law.

Angie Zapata, who was 18-years-old, was born with male genitalia and had more recently began to live as a woman. Should homosexuals and transgenders like Angie Zapata be protected by the hate-crime law?

That is just horrible!!! OMG! All the guy had to do was say he wasn't interested and move along. To actually have so much hate that they would kill someone and so brutally is beyond me.

uuumm, anyone who is killed because of who they are / what they look like is a hate-crime. It is sooo sad that people think that to solve their problems they need to hurt others. It doesnt matter who they are, no innocent person deserves to die. And if you think they are not innocent just because they are different then you are sadly mistaken!!

We should treat every crime equally, regardless of any other factor. Hate-crime laws should not exist.

Hurting someone who is a white suburban housewife is less punishable than if she was the same exact person in every way except that she was gay???

Equal Crime, Equal Justice, Equal Punishment, Period.

I don't believe we need a "hate crime law" to hang that sorry SOB. Murder is murder. We have far too many laws already. Pretty soon I won't be able to wipe without permission from my government. Read "Liberty and Tyranny", by Mark R. Levin...then you might want to check out the "5000 Year Leap", by W. Cleon Skousen. We are loosing control of our country. Wake Up People

I know how this will sound, but I really think killing someone is already against the law. My issue with this sort of law is that it's just a political act to make it look like politicians are doing something.

To be direct. I'd feel a lot better about these laws if I felt better about the politicians making them.

Crime is crime. I don't believe that the punishment should differ. If someone murders my son to steal his wallet is he any less dead than a homosexual or transsexual who is murdered? Equal protection under the law!

Punish the act not the reason, Motive is not even required to convict someone of anything.

Should throwing a pie at a conservative speaker on a collage campus be punished more than simple assault. As it is the hatred of the thrower against the conservative that prompted it. In addition to a potential federal violation of the 1st amendment.

Oh that's right, Conservatives aren't to have any rights in the hope and change era... are we?
Law now means nothing. lord Obama wants to disregard bankruptcy laws to give the Unions that assisted in ruining the US auto industry a controlling interest. Funded of course by taxpayers, while giving the bond holders that have 1st rights in bankruptcy nothing. And threatens them from the White House, if they do not go along. It's a brave new world alright.

I had a girlfriend, that was beaten, raped, and murdered by an 18 year old crack head who had stalked her. He was caught and got life without parole. I think if I had killed his sorry butt, it would have been justified enough.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!! that means you can do anything that expresses your self! (that doesnt include killing if you were wondering) so stop being cruel to people who are just expressing themselves!!!!!!!!!!

They are still human beings, regardless of their choices in life. Even if being gay was a sin (there's been some debate about that), the fact remains that “all have sinned, and thus fallen short of the glory of God.” Translation: God is the ONLY one qualified to pass judgement in these matters, & we all deserve to be treated equally, whether we're straight or not. No one should have to fear for their life due to who've they've chosen. pass judgement matters deserve treated equally straight fear life whove
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” John 8:7

Hell yes, they are a group of people who are targeted for harassment based solely on their sexual preference and life style, if the hate crime laws are good for African-Americans, Latino, Jewish, Catholic, or any other group then it is damn sure good for the Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, and Bisexual community.

Hate-crime laws should protect against all types of hate crimes. This should not even be a discussion.
Law makers need to get their act together and stop worrying about getting re-elected and worry more about making laws that benefit the people of America.

That poor woman. Personally, I hate transphobia. It sickens me. The statements he made show just how cruel he was.

To say that the law shouldn't protect people based on gender identity is terrible when crimes like these exist. To all those who think she was deceiving people, the sister did comment that she often let her boyfriends know her status over the phone, and many comments indicate that she was somewhat open about it. I get the feeling the guy was just confirming his suspicions and it wasn't that much of a shock to him. It's disgusting.

Why is so much hate directed towards transgender people? Society can't seem to accept transgender people- they see them as sick, confused, or just transitioning because they can. Nobody is an 'it'. I think it's really awful how little people understand.

If you don't equate crimes like these with crimes against race, consider that religion is protected by these laws. They're crimes based on groups of people. We can't allow these atrocities to continue.

Why should there be hate crime law? If someone's beaten to death, it doesn't matter why unless you're trying to catch who did it. The point is that the crime is done and a PERSON was a victim, not a transgender or a homosexual or any other minority. The criminals should be punished the same no matter who the victim was.

I commend your accepting stance... Transgendered people are so hated for something they can't control. They have to live with that dissonance between who they are and their body every day- and it makes me think about that kid who hanged himself over this... Sad that a ten year old should be driven to suicide.

i dont see why they wouldnt...hate-crimes are to protect everyone for whatever reason they are being attacked...hate crimes should protect people who believe that i dont know...the world is going to end in 2012. I dont really know why somone would want to commit a hate crime against those people but they should still be protected. If people hate them and attack them becuase of who they are then they should be protected
