Total Government vs No Government ... where do you lean?

You know, it isn't Left Vs Right ... Democrat Vs Republican anymore!

It is a fight between those who are aligned with Total Government (Totalitarianism, Communism, Fascism, Dictatorship) and No Government (Anarchy). Sadly, both Democrats and Republicans are way to the left of what would be a center point between these two extremes.

The Constitution of the United States, for example, structures a Government that is way closer to Anarchy than the center point between Total Government and No Government.

This is how far our country has drifted away from its core values found in the Constitution.

That was too easy. The other options were totally unacceptable. Even 'none of the above' implies a greater document for liberty and freedom than the Constitution.

That is why we need to ensure we get off our complacent butts, research, get informed, stay informed & vote based on that research. If voting was a college exam the majority of "WE THE PEOPLE" would have failed miserably!

There is a reason that our founding fathers only allowed property owners & then the Military to vote ~ they were the actual stake holders in the outcome of elections...

There is a reason they mandated that upon voting on issues of national interest, representatives had to return to their districts. Only residents of a district could be elected to respresent that district. The only pay they would receive would be stipends.

I realize that a stipend is not realistic ~ so they should put their pay raises to a vote & let the citizens that pay them decide ~ Then they would have to prove their record to the citizens to whom they are accountable.

If Americans can't/won't get engaged & stay engaged then they need to push for term limits ... So they can go be distracted by the Celebrities & "NOT" screw the rest of us.

Government is a necessary evil. If we could do without it, we would. The problem with no government is that someone will always take control. Just not likely to be someone of our choosing.
On the other hand, when we don't take an active role in choosing our government and deciding what it is going to do, we get what we have now. Candidates that were assigned to us by the media and the party bigwigs. Officials telling us what we're getting instead of asking us what we want. The Constitution was designed to keep the government accountable and subject to us. When we give up any of that in exchange for an easier ride, we allow ourselves to drift further and further from the freedom we originally were supposed to have.

The answer is a happy medium between government regulation and free enterprise. Too much government regulation is bad, stifles capitalism, too little government regulation is bad, guaranteeing rampant capitalism. The Constitution spells out the framework of government for our Republic society.

If followed. I lean to the sode that says there is a place for government, but not in every aspect of our lives.

Get rid of FEMA, The NEA, The DOE, All Federal Welfare programs.
Keep the Armed forces, Border protection and Dept of the Interior. Everyone else is a waste.

The fact that there are so very many average Americans who support this big government nonsense amazes me! Those forms of government have not worked anywhere they have ever been tried; I am of course using the government of the U.S., which has been in place for 230 years, as the guidepost. What I also cannot understand is why those who feel that those other governments are so great, don't go there. This is a free country, and as such one is free to leave at anytime he/she pleases. I would advise, however, to think long and hard before you go because in some of those places they may let you in, but they won't let you out. Kinda like roach motels!

I place very little stock on the foundation of government to begin with. In its present form, even less so.

I would rather take my chances under a anarchy than live under the strong arm of the government.

If there could be a voluntary government, one which only collected the tribute its individual citizens deigned to give it, I would have no problem with that. But under these circumstances, such a government would cease to be a government in the first place, and would become a private business whose success was dependent on the satisfaction of its clients. So, I opt for Anarchy.

Well reasoned and well stated - The Constitution was designed to foster the beginning part of your comment but as in all mechanisms designed by man, if the structures that that are designed to support, balance, and regulate the mechanism break down or are ignored ... things go terribly wrong. In the United States, this is where we find ourselves today as it relates to the functioning of the Constitution!

I like your argument for anarchy ...

A third way, a transcendence of capitalism and socialism. It is explained as a compromise between laissez-faire and liberalism. Therefore, more social justices are maintained, such as free education, heath care, etc, but importing and exporting and partial aristocracy will remain also.

True social justice is libertarian socialism. Where everyone is equal and there is no government or aristocracy. But then again socialism doesn't work in practice. That's why I proposed a centrist left view, like under Bill Clinton or Tony Blair in the UK. How can you be self-reliant if you don't have financial security? How can you be self-reliant if society is built on contributing to the capital?

What you are attempting to describe is a ... UTOPIA, and they do not exist - EVER.

The reason UTOPIA's never exist is that these structures never account for, and go against, the myopic drive that is in every human being.

    Selfishness and ego.

Fools fall for intellectual "fools gold" of libertarian socialism and other forms of UTOPIA!

If a structure accounts for, and works with the self-interest in every human being, then one achieves something that is imperfect but works for all. There is a reason that the United States grew so strongly and effectively in the first 200 years of it's formation. It was the first country that embraced the essence of humans being able to carry out their lives in freedom and little Government CONTROL (ie: self-reliance).

Today, 233 years later ... we have lost our way.
