  • Professor says doctors use 'death pathway' to euthenasia of the elderly

  • Treatment on average brings a patient to death in 33 hours

  • Around 29 per cent of patients that die in hospital are on controversial 'care pathway'

  • Pensioner admitted to hospital given treatment by doctor on weekend shift

  • NHS doctors are prematurely ending the lives of thousands of elderly hospital patients because they are difficult to manage or to free up beds, a senior consultant claimed yesterday.

Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly.
He claimed there was often a lack of clear evidence for initiating the Liverpool Care Pathway, a method of looking after terminally ill patients that is used in hospitals across the country.
It is designed to come into force when doctors believe it is impossible for a patient to recover and death is imminent.

It can include withdrawal of treatment – including the provision of water and nourishment by tube – and on average brings a patient to death in 33 hours.
There are around 450,000 deaths in Britain each year of people who are in hospital or under NHS care. Around 29 per cent – 130,000 – are of patients who were on the LCP.
Professor Pullicino claimed that far too often elderly patients who could live longer are placed on the LCP and it had now become an ‘assisted death pathway rather than a care pathway’.

He cited ‘pressure on beds and difficulty with nursing confused or difficult-to-manage elderly patients’ as factors.
Professor Pullicino revealed he had personally intervened to take a patient off the LCP who went on to be successfully treated.

He said this showed that claims they had hours or days left are ‘palpably false’.
In the example he revealed a 71-year-old who was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia and epilepsy was put on the LCP by a covering doctor on a weekend shift.

Using the worst examples of this sort of health care is really silly.

WE as a country are not even following the British model of this,.. so why is this in anyway indicative of our health care plan?

Socialized medicine in America won't work. PERIOD! OBAMACARE will be nothing but a huge debt to Americans and thousands of doctors and others in the field will leave or retire if it were to happen. Canada has it, yet they come here for care in droves. It would be much worse here seeing as the doctor to patient ratio would be much worse here.

No it isn't. I am in my 60's. It isn't happening. I am healthy, fit, and have great health care. People today are in better shape than they ever were before because we have preventative medicine. I just went to my 45th high school reunion. Most people looked great. We exercise, eat right, take our lipitor and go visit our doctor's regularly for check ups.

ALL insurances are socialized medicine. I have an HMO through work. I've had it for years. Obama just want the uninsured to be insured. Otherwise we, the people foot the bill in taxes.

By the year 2016, the Obamacare "penalty" tax will reach roughly $2,000 per year for a two-person household.75% of the financial burden of Obamacare's new taxes will fall onto Americans making less than $120,000 a year The great Middle Class, in other words, will bear this new tax more than anyone else.

In effect, what has really happened here is a great swindle: Obama got the middle class to support his legislation by promising it was NOT a tax, and by promising it would LOWER health insurance costs. In reality, however, it RAISES health insurance costs, it IS a tax, and the majority of that tax burden falls squarely on the very same middle-class voters who put Obama into office under false pretenses. That's a swindle, by any definition.

Not surprisingly, this realization doesn't sit well with many middle class taxpayers. While the original emotional appeal of Obamacare was nicely packaged and seductively marketed to the masses, the sobering, post-honeymoon reality slaps us all in the face like a wet fish: Smack! This thing is another huge tax increase on the working class! And on top of that, it gives the IRS scary new powers to pry into our private finances. How did you all think compliance with Obamacare was going to be enforced, anyway? It's going to empower the IRS with even more agents!

      What a load of rot!!!.
I am considered an Old Age Pensioner.During the last 2 years I have been diagnosed and treated for Breast Cancer and severe Psoriasis. Our N.H.S. has given me all that my illnesses required and at a very speedy rate. My Cancer was diagnosed and operated on in less than a month. My Psoriasis was treated with Phototherapy 3 times a week for 13 weeeks and is still being looked after by the excellent N.H.S.
Nowhere in the world can such wonderful treatment be given when it is needed most totally free of charge. We do not need medical insurance to get the immediate care our medical conditions require!

If obama'scare gets implemented and all health care is controlled by the regime it will decide who lives and who dies.
I am aware for quite some time that in Western Europe elderly are being persuaded to accept euthanasia so as not be a burden on the relatives and society at large. Simply put, the very people who worked hard to create the prosperity in their countries are expected to just roll over and die.
I am also aware that often euthanasia, often without consent, or simply refusal to do anything to save the life of an elderly patient is the way the government saves the money.

I agree with your assessment of how this obama-death-trap will impact the Average Hard Working Middle Class.
However, this should have NOT been a surprise to anyone in my opinion.
This man was shady from the beginning; his language from his first campaign was too good to be true.
It was and is the responsibility of those that voted to educate themselves on this man’s actions, which wasn’t much there to begin with.
We as individuals are responsible for our own actions and although I agree even for me romney is a gamble we must be willing to take what we dish out, that’s why I said that one MUST educated themselves before voting.
I personally do NOT trust romney; he blows whichever way the wind blows.
Nevertheless, obama is just out to destroy the Middle Class whether he’s aware of it or not, but one MUST educated themselves and live with the choices one has made.
Lastly, I was very aware that this “free or affordable” healthcare was nothing more than a trap from the onset.

I have experienced socialized medicine in Europe. Good luck with that..... As the number of years you have left to live and contribute to the bottom line diminish, so do your chances of getting adequate care. When the equation is 100% negative / 0% positive (when you become an expenditure with no return to the system), you can kiss it good-bye.

I'm confident the Supreme Court will strike this law down as unconstitutional. First, it's unlawful for the government to require one to buy anything, and that's just a starter.

On my last trip to Ukraine I saw a man with a huge goiter on his neck (looked like a second head), when's the last time anyone saw that here in America? Elective surgeries (non-emergency, non-life threatening, quality of life improving like hernia repairs, etc.) can take years to get to.

I have a number of stories I can relate that I have witnessed that concern children with disabilities in state custody but the Progressives would call me a liar because it doesn't fit in with their vision of utopia.

It,s sad that someone even considers euthanasia for another person based on those reasons, especially our elderly who we should be grateful for gving us life early on. It is similar to the thinking of the nazis. I hope it never becomes the norm in America.

A few things wrong with your comment. Being 'elderly' isn't as much fun as it's portrayed in TV commercials. Years ago my husband said that he couldn't wait to become an 'old man'. On the other hand, I was bound and determined to kill myself before I became an 'old lady.'
So euthanasia isn't for everyone, but it IS the answer for some of us. My doctor promised me that I would live only as long as I want. Don't take that away from me.

That pretty well backs it up that the Government is trying to rid itself of he baby boomers. What really gripes me is that the wife and I have two health insurance plans but when we hit 65 next year medicare becomes the primary and there is no way for me to tell them to take their medicare and put it where the sun don't shine.
