  • Professor says doctors use 'death pathway' to euthenasia of the elderly

  • Treatment on average brings a patient to death in 33 hours

  • Around 29 per cent of patients that die in hospital are on controversial 'care pathway'

  • Pensioner admitted to hospital given treatment by doctor on weekend shift

  • NHS doctors are prematurely ending the lives of thousands of elderly hospital patients because they are difficult to manage or to free up beds, a senior consultant claimed yesterday.

Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly.
He claimed there was often a lack of clear evidence for initiating the Liverpool Care Pathway, a method of looking after terminally ill patients that is used in hospitals across the country.
It is designed to come into force when doctors believe it is impossible for a patient to recover and death is imminent.

It can include withdrawal of treatment – including the provision of water and nourishment by tube – and on average brings a patient to death in 33 hours.
There are around 450,000 deaths in Britain each year of people who are in hospital or under NHS care. Around 29 per cent – 130,000 – are of patients who were on the LCP.
Professor Pullicino claimed that far too often elderly patients who could live longer are placed on the LCP and it had now become an ‘assisted death pathway rather than a care pathway’.

He cited ‘pressure on beds and difficulty with nursing confused or difficult-to-manage elderly patients’ as factors.
Professor Pullicino revealed he had personally intervened to take a patient off the LCP who went on to be successfully treated.

He said this showed that claims they had hours or days left are ‘palpably false’.
In the example he revealed a 71-year-old who was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia and epilepsy was put on the LCP by a covering doctor on a weekend shift.

Gee that is interesting, they told me my regular health insurance would be secondary when I reached 65 and medicare would be primary and I had no choice. That is what the retirement specialist told me when I retired from the Federal Government.
Maybe I will look into this a bit more. Thanks

"It has failed everywhere else"? That's funny, because not even European conservatives want to get rid of universal health care.

Well.. You HEARD from the British Doctors.. NOW listen to the American ones..

According to an absolutely stunning new poll, 40 percent of all U.S. doctors plan to bail out of the profession over the next three years. Yes, you read the correctly. 4 out of every 10 doctors in America say that they are getting out in the next three years. Considering the fact that the United States was already facing an acute shortage of doctors in the coming years, this has the potential to destroy the U.S. health care system. Not that the other elements of Obamacare weren't going to completely wreck it already, but if hordes of doctors start running for the exits this is going to create a health nightmare of unprecedented proportions. The greatest medical system in the history of the world is degenerating into a complete and utter wasteland.

The new poll mentioned above was a Merritt Hawkins survey of 2,379 doctors for the Physicians Foundation which was conducted back in August.

This is part of Obamacare, if the Supreme Court allows it to stand.
Look forward, not only to this sort of official decision-making, but to the suicides of the elderly who are denied certain treatments because of their age, prescribed pain medications only.

The British Health Care System is quite different from the American. A large part of the cost is assumed by districts over the taxes and since 1991 also by foundations, a smaller part by health insurances, and certain expensive treatments, including prevention, by the patients themselves. So, most patients have access to basic medical care, within the budgets. The latter are often tight for hospitals, which puts a limit to certain services and causes long waiting times for patients, and the people who can afford the cost for expensive treatments will, of course, benefit from faster, more efficient services. In European countries, where health and accident insurances (mostly private companies) are obligatory, the coverage of treatments depends on the premiums paid by the individuals, cost-sharing or deductible agreed upon and additive insurances. There are, of course, special treatments and private clinics which are accessible only to rich private or sponsored patients.
It is indeed criminal to kill off patients before time, because their treatment is too expensive, too long, palliative or because a patient is difficult, only due to a tight budget.
I do not believe that an obligatory health insurance would have effect on such practise in either sense, unless the cut prices of care.

Do you mean the British or other European governments?
In the U.K., I remember that the Queen herself decided to pay taxes some years ago, and that certain new taxes were added. Like in other European countries, taxes were raised. Furthermore, several public institutions were privatised, but especially with the transport systems, there were problems with safety and poor quality and too high cost, as the private owners massively reduced their personel. As today, England is struggling like most of the European countries with huge deficits, mostly due to overspeculation, erroneous investments and also fraud, I am wondering if these measures will help, unless they introduce more sustainable policy.
As to my country, several initiatives to cut down the cost of the medical sector were turned down by several votations (the last one included the introduction of one single health insurance with drastic reductions on the coverage of medical treatments and medicines - also turned down - took place last Sunday, 17 June). As to tax cuts, there have been certain efforts, but in many cases some privileged people or companies got the big benefits. I should add that the poorest are exempted from taxes.

"Denial of Reality" occurs frequently, for instance when Conservatives conveniently "forget" that the cost of health care is FAR HIGHER in America (17% of your GDP vs. 6-11% in all other Western countries which have universal health care).
