'Too Fat To Fly' Passenger Sues Southwest Airlines For 'Discriminatory Actions'

Kenlie Tiggeman, the overweight passenger who garnered national
attention last May after she claimed a Southwest gate agent told her she
was "too fat to fly," is now suing the airline.

Tiggeman, who lives in New Orleans and blogs about weight loss on her
website, AllTheWeigh.com, filed an injunction against Southwest in
district court on April 20, alleging that the Southwest agents "did not
follow their company policy and chose to discriminate, humiliate and
embarrass" her in front of "airport onlookers," and that the airline
uses "discriminatory actions ... toward obese customers."

I'm sorry but airplanes have to tip their hats to physics. There's only so much weight a plane can carry, and there's only so many seats they can widen before they become financially unviable. If you're a fatty you kill the industry because they can't make a profit.
Suck it up, and learn to suck it in. If you're fat, you need to pay for 2 seats. It's your choice. Be fat and pay more or be normal size and get life cheaper. Just pick one.

My mom, a larger lady, flew to Florida with no problem, on Southwest. A week later, she had to buy a second seat to get home. It was all up to the ticket agent to determine if she was too fat to buckle safely. She was humiliated and embarrassed beyond belief. Why don't they have an actual standard? Like a private area, away from other passengers, where a hefty person can prove they can or cannot fit into the standard seat. The guidelines are really vague and it is all up to whomever is in front of you at the time. I totally agree with her that it is discriminatory...but not just to obese people. Women gain weight in the hips and thighs, where men tend to gain weight in their stomach. Women get wider while men get deeper and they can more easily fit in the narrow seats.

Maybe normal size people should sue fat people for invading their space... Fat people just need to realize they are fat, overweight or obese and do something about it vs worrying about someone telling them the truth.. I know surgeons that tell their patients they are just too fat to proceed and if they want the surgery they need to lose weight.. Maybe the Truth hurts, but it's the truth..

it's not "discrimination," it's a matter of fitting you on the plane and actually being able to get the plane of the ground. dont wanna have to deal with that? go get a gym membership.

She doesn't look so big, at least not to the point that she couldn't fit into a seat.

I think "lose some weight fatty" is crude; however, having travelled extensively for business, I really don't like being sandwiched between two bulky passengers.

When your stuff is hanging over my seat, that tells me you need some of my seat. I paid for said seat. If I paid for that seat and part of your ass is on it, you should be paying extra. Because you decide to put more calories in your mouth than your bodies needs, I should not have to suffer. Because you don't want to get up at 5:15 am and run three miles before work when I do, is not my problem. Why should I pay for your lack of discipline.

Overweight people are always discriminated against in this country. It's one of the last groups you can pick on along with white men without any back lash.

Well, I don't agree with the statement "lose some weight fatty," but I am not taking her side. Southwest Airlines has a policy to buy two seats if you cannot fit into one. It doesn't sound like the issue was handled sensitively, and for that, I am sorry for Kenlie Tiggeman, but other passengers should not have to suffer because they're sitting next to someone who does not fit in the seat. Ms. Tiggeman was offered a refund by the airlines; that's all she deserves. Obesity is usually brought on by lifestyle decisions, and businesses should not have to accomodate for it.

How easy to judge. I have had very heavy people sit next to me and it is not pleasant but everyone seems so harsh.

I've had to sit next to a super obese woman on an airliner, and she too up about half of my seat. She also hurt my arm and shouder, and never said "sorry" or "excluse me." People that large should be forced to pay for two seats for the safety of other passengers.

I don't like the wording of that choice. But anyway, it's just a safety precaution. It's the same as elevators.

    Here's a thought ..
If you can't sit in one of those teensy seats
    (and yes, they are teensy)
IF you overlap and take up more space
(and smother the passenger right next to you)
The policies are clear .. purchase an extra seat ..
For planes now are booked full before takeoff ..
Flights are cancelled/combined if not full ..
IF the flight is not full .. then she could possibly get a refund of 2nd ticket
    (depending on airline policy)

Argh! Pressed the wrong one again!!!

It's sad that this lady was shunned in public, but then again, the airline company might be thinking of costs and money. I mean airplane seats are quite small.

I seriously doubt a SW agent said those words to her. They most likely told her that if she hadn't purchased two tickets to accommodate her large self that she would be unable to take that particular flight due to a full booking.

Their policy is that you need to make double seating arrangements and can get a refund for one of the seats if the flight is not solidly booked and your fat ass can be accommodated without disrupting, displacing or crushing another full-fare passenger.
