It is a part of our history. My husband is from West Virginia and he has confederate flags on his truck, boat...ect. He loves it and we fly it proudly.

It may represent Southern Heritage but it also represents slavery, lynching, rape, torture and dehumanization just as the swatiska represents German pride and Jewish torture. Glory and shame in one symbol. To those who were not dehumanized it represents glory and an insensitivity to those who were. Sad that we care more about retaining things no matter how it destroys other people.

Since the Civil War was about States Rights not Slavery, it is a symbol of heritage not hate. As a localitional southerner, I see a lot of folks are still stupidly convinced, without reading the history, that the Civil war was only about slavery, and they hate the confederate flag becuas they are too ignorant of the truth to know or understand that it represented the States who did not want the federal government telling them what to do, how to do it, when to do it and whom to do it for. It was about maintaining the constitution, states have many and broad individual rights, and the fed has few. Since that defeat of the confederacy, the fed has been stealing state rights, controlling every state by refusing federal highway or interstate commerce funds if they did not comply, forcing massive and expensive legislation on them and over burdening them with stupid things like welfare, drinking ages, school interferenceand many many others.

It was about our sovereign freedoms, and the states have been taking it on the fanny ever since.

Have you ever heard them argue that the issue of protecting State's Rights is racist? They do it with the circular argument that the Civil War was fought by the South to protect States who wanted slavery. Its been a while since I researched all this but I recall deciding the war was over the Southern States being shut out of Congress when the Northern States decided to slap a tariff on the exported Southern Argi-goods. It was a twist of Taxation without representation.

However, you are exactly right. It was a State's Rights issue. The South tried to be strong in numbers to force the North to back off their economic pressures. The North refused, rightly concluding the addition of the emotional slavery issue would be a perfect rallying cry, and forced the South into a war for Her survival.

They didn't think we would fight.

BTW my ancestors fought in both sides of the Civil War, and it wasn't about slavery that they fought.

This flag is part of my Southern heritage, as much or more than the way blacks call themselves African-Americans and wear African-inspired clothing. Now, I don't call myself a Southern-American, just an American, but I am very proud to be a true Southerner. I mean, after all, I was actually born and raised in the South, whereas the "African-American's" were born here in the U.S. My respect for the Confederate flag has nothing to do with slavery, rather my pride for my Southern heritage.

Racist tend to be the only ones who deny the shame of this flag. It was held high at lnychings, cross burning, rape of black women, on plantations that whipped the flesh from the backs of their slaves etc etc. It is flown high at Klan rallies. Maybe once it was a flag of glory for SOuthern soldiers but it quickly disintegrated to its present state. It is a part of history but that does not mean that it should be flown with the American Flag. It is not unworthy of that honor and the negativity of it should not be flaunted in the face of those who were destroyed under that flag.

Unlike the "X" flag, the mexican flag, whatever flag that is in your picture, the confederate flag was designed for the confederate army which was fighting for the individual rights of states. Since the loss, the da*n federal government has been dictating to the states and enslaving them and the citizenry with a bloated federal government and welfare/nanny regulations that create a standard by which many do not work, and still get paid. Slavery to the federal government is still slavery.
