Time's Person of the Year Is the 'Protester': Correct or Cop Out?

In 2006, Time magazine threw readers for a loop by naming "You" its Person of the Year. Some took it in stride, others felt it was a bit evasive. However, this year's Person of the Year isn't even a "person," per se -- it's an ambiguous, disjointed group of people. Time's 2011 Person of the Year is: The Protester.

Americans might be tempted to conclude that this is implied support of the Occupy movement, but that's not exactly the case. Time makes it clear they're honoring the global protest movement. Specifically, they're calling attention to the Arab Spring, which toppled despotic regimes throughout the Arab world, from Libya to Kuwait, Tunisia to Egypt.

The Occupy movement does claim to be inspired by the Arab Spring, and Time does mention it, but that's not their focus. The next person in line for the title was U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, for his "combination of hard work, good timing and possibly suicidal guts." How do you feel about Time's Person of the Year?

How about the Navy Seals that took out Bin Laden? These are brave, honorable men who brought pride to our country.

I remember responding to a Letter To Editor on WND last year where the writer stated that an article in Time looked like it had been researched on loo-paper--with the statement that that is the only purpose for which the magazine is anymore fit.

It de-stabalized Libya and made the world a little more un-settled. From that point I agree.

    This realization is astounding.
    I am...
    astounded.

but there are things to be gained here, and things to be lost, both good and bad. America's gotten stagnant.

its too soon to tell what the ramifications actually will be,
and for the most part a lot of the protests continue... Syria, Yemen, and Bahrain are all shooting protesters

As someone who has not been wrong with any political prediction for the past three years I'm going to say the ramifications are not going to be good. I do not think I'm going out on a limb very far to say that.

Joseph Stalin was Time Magazines’ ‘Man of the Year’ in ’39 and ’42; of course, this means nothing to historical ignoramuses, as Obummer’s popularity wanes. Time to the rescue, elevating public defecators, rapists and anarchists to credible status; and why, Time is predominately a left leaning periodical; has been and will always be; their man is dropping in the polls, hence, they’re compelled to excite more ‘feeding-frenzied’ liberals into voting for Obummer. It is all calculated and easily decoded; Time Magazine, bore me some more.

The Navy Seals killed one guy- they could have done it with a missile or a bomb. And they had lines upon lines of support- and the CIA had got the intelligence in the first place.

The Egyptian, Tunisian and Libyan revolutions were done without support, spontaneously and with the serious risk of painful death.

Many of my friends were among the 2011 protesters in Malaysia's BERSIH 2.0 pro-democracy rally that was peaceful yet attacked viciously by the Malaysian police. (Though, I've got to admit, not as viciously as some of the Arab ones...)

Only because of the addition of the OWS crowd. The OWS is interested in only one thing and that is perceived monetary inequality, not like the protesters who a putting their lives on the line to fight brutal and oppressive governments. The protesters in the EU fall into the same category as the OWS people.
