TIME Magazine Names President Obama 'Person of the Year': Does He Deserve the Title?

After much speculation, Wednesday morning, TIME magazine revealed the name of the coveted "Person of the Year" slot on its New Year’s issue. The honor went to the Commander-in-Chief and President of the United States: Barack Obama.

Others up for consideration were the Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai who was shot fighting for women’s rights; Tim Cook who has doubled Apple’s profits since Steve Jobs passed away; and Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

The magazine says each year they pick “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year.” Time managing editor Rick Stengel, appeared on “Today” Wednesday morning and revealed the magazine’s choice and cover design. He explained that they went with Obama for several reasons, stating, “He’s basically the beneficiary and the author of a kind of a New America, a new demographic, a new cultural America that he is now the symbol of.” In addition, Obama is the first Democratic president since FDR to win back-to-back elections with more than 50% of the popular vote.

Some say the choice is predictable, bland and uncreative. Others feel he’s just plain old not worthy. And still more wonder since he was named TIME’s Person of the Year in 2008 after becoming the nation’s first black president, shouldn’t they give someone else a shot? What do you think? Do you agree with TIME magazine's choice?

I cannot recall the name of the Afghani teenager who was shot for trying to attend school, but come on--isn't THAT person more qualified.

The real irony is, if you read the Time article related to it, they essentially gave it to him for winning re-election in spite of a bad economy. So now Obama has gotten the Nobel for not being Bush and been named "person of the year" for doing a lousy job but being able to keep the position. Pretty low bar for awards if you ask me.

I think I actually read somewhere that that girl, and those like her, shouldn't get attention because it endangers them. Their ideas is really what people should be spreading.

I can see that (though I doubt the Taliban subscribes to Time), but my point is that I can come up with dozens of other names more qualified than the current White House occupier.

He was elected to a second term. That is no small achievement.
  • Rick EyeLuvH... 2013/01/30 16:34:22

He was not "elected". He stole it, really, not like you on the left accused Bush of in Florida, he really did it. There is a ton of evidence to prove it, but if it's not a liberal being wronged, it's not ever taken seriously. So, he wasn't "elected", he stole it, and it was no small achievement, it cost $1billion .

No, you have to get into the Liberal media bubble to hear their lies. It doesn't matter what media bubble you tune into, you will never get the whole story, however, if you look at the "state of the Union", it's not hard to see, he has done way more damage then anything else! Your profile picture shows the Romney looser picture, well with Obummer, America is the looser.

I disagree. With Obama, all of the American people are the winners. With Robme, only the privileged would have been.

And who would have thought Time Magazine was a Bush Ass kisser in 2004 and part of the conservative media who adored him, so sad and so wrong:

    Rick
As presidents go, Bush was not perfect, that's true, but there is no getting around the FACT that he was a whole lot better then our current infiltrator. You can even blame Bush for everything, but if Obummer was any good, he would have turned things in the right direction by now. It has been 4 years and we are far worse now then we were when he started. I'll take Bush over this rag head ANYDAY!

nothingbutthetruth, he had a billion dollar donor along with his multi million dollar donor, that helps. But what really pushed him over the top was the brain dead, clueless, America hating, indoctrinated, entitlement whores that voted for him.

Well, all those people you mentioned brain are not dead, that's for sure! Because they were thinking straight and collective when they voted for him. About the latter, if you have mother, sister or a daughter, you must remember they are women too!

He get's special recognition. That is why you see Mr. Hobbs on the cover. Calvin refused this honor and would not appear on the front page unless he appeared with Mr. Hobbs. If you notice Calvin is humble. He took the time to bow in front of Mr. Mr Hobbs and he recognized him for all the important things he has done. Calvin knows if it were not for Mr. Hobbs he would not be the man he is today nor would he have been able to achieve this honor.
