After much speculation, Wednesday morning, TIME magazine revealed the name of the coveted "Person of the Year" slot on its New Year’s issue. The honor went to the Commander-in-Chief and President of the United States: Barack Obama.
Others up for consideration were the Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai who was shot fighting for women’s rights; Tim Cook who has doubled Apple’s profits since Steve Jobs passed away; and Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

The magazine says each year they pick “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year.” Time managing editor Rick Stengel, appeared on “Today” Wednesday morning and revealed the magazine’s choice and cover design. He explained that they went with Obama for several reasons, stating, “He’s basically the beneficiary and the author of a kind of a New America, a new demographic, a new cultural America that he is now the symbol of.” In addition, Obama is the first Democratic president since FDR to win back-to-back elections with more than 50% of the popular vote.
Some say the choice is predictable, bland and uncreative. Others feel he’s just plain old not worthy. And still more wonder since he was named TIME’s Person of the Year in 2008 after becoming the nation’s first black president, shouldn’t they give someone else a shot? What do you think? Do you agree with TIME magazine's choice?

The real irony is, if you read the Time article related to it, they essentially gave it to him for winning re-election in spite of a bad economy. So now Obama has gotten the Nobel for not being Bush and been named "person of the year" for doing a lousy job but being able to keep the position. Pretty low bar for awards if you ask me.
