Tim Wise touches on 2 very important points about our demographics in this country. The shifting of assumed entitlement and the degradation of white privilege in this country. While it's hard to talk about these issues without getting too hostile, Tim at least was articulate enough in his post to sort of transcend his own rawness and hostility.

Thanks for posting this PE. Good stuff.

I find it difficult to take Don Lemon seriously when he trims his eyebrows like that. Apart from that, I think we can agree that Tim Wise speaks for the vast majority of Americans.

Considering he starts with the disclaimer that this isn't against ALL of the "white right", it's amazing that only the ones who have an issue and take umbrage with his statements are the ones who do most of the bitchin' here. Check out the comments starting from the 5:44 mark for those who'd call him racist. That argument is false. The man touches on some very sensitive issues here that requires one to take true stock of themselves and their lifestyles and beliefs. These are the people that Mr. Wise is referrring to. For all the talk of the elimination of this 'entitlement' and that 'entitlement', it seems the one entitlement that isn't on the table for the extreme right, or even open to negotiation, is the sense of entitlement many of these people have when they issue their cry of "wanting my country back"!

Tim Wise isn't so wise. He is working VERY VERY HARD at causing dissension among people of all colors.
Racism ends when EVERYONE puts down the gloves and picks up a coffee and talk it over. (beer in my case TYVM)
color is boring, the conversations about color tend to be 10 to 15 seconds long.

Funny how white folks wanted to talk about race to justify genocide, Jim Crow, slavery, segregation, lynching and discrimination but when these evils are pointed out as the root cause of many of the social problems that plague the black community and how we still experience white bias and racism all of a sudden it's causing "dissention" and you blame the victims. You want to talk only if you can dictate what the talk should be about that makes you comfortable. You pompous arrogant piece of rat feces

That is such ancient history, and it is histroy misrepresented. We could also dicuss how democrats in the later 1800's, as slavery was ending completely, wanted blacks to only count as 3/4ths of a person. But in America, times change, attitudes change and here in th esouth, we have so much mixed blood, mixed families and a lack of racism to the point that it is a boring subject. The only folks I ever see treated badly, are those who are acting badly to start with-like trailer park trash at the Dr's office swearing, and demanding service, free, on their meidcaid card, or the hood rat with his pants lelted below his rear, acting like a new york gangster thug-THOSE two types DO get treated according to how they act.

Racism, not nearly the issue anymore. The OVER USE of the racism card?? Completely played out, and using color as any sort of measure of a person, long gone. People get taken at face value, periiod.

Your American History is a little off. The 3/5th clause was added to the constitution in 1787 and the democrats of that time were actually democratic-republicans, well technically they were anti-federalists but that is neither here nor there.

My apologies but I dispise revisionist history.

    and speaking of genocide?????
    who is killing who?
are you talking about Rwanda? Somalia? that is African against African genocide. White man has nothing to do with it.
The Genocide of white europeans against white jews?
the genocide that Islam calls for against jews?
RACISM I have seen, at a truck stop in Louisianna. black man shows up for work late, he gets harassed by a couple of white waitresses. who had to bus the tables (poor bitches) he say's Sorry, My kid was sick. Apparently he said it too loud cuz a jackbooted motorcycle cop strolled up and said don't you be harassing these ladies now 'boy'
THAT is RACISM and it makes me sick.
WHY can't you understand or believe that the average conservative IS ON YOUR SIDE?

union losses in the civil war
    Battle deaths: 110,070
    Disease, etc.: 250,152
    Total 360,222

360,000 white men dies for your freedom, and you still want money?

how about all the politicians since then, mostly white, who worked hard on your behalf to make sure you could NEVER AGAIN be thought of as less than me?
do I ask gratitude, HELL NO! I am not that ignorant.
ALL I ask is that you understand that the past is not a weapon, it is what we must learn from so that we do not repeat the mistakes our ancestors made.

FYI. none of my ancestors were on this continent except from my Great Grandmothers side, she was a Monocan Indian. the rest got here after 1880.
so would you punish all whites? even those with no roots in slavery?
  • PLANETE... A Carpe... 2010/11/14 03:00:30

Reparations are not a form of punishment. It's justice.
  • A Carpe... PLANETE... 2010/11/14 03:27:33

reparations are very specifically used as punishment in a court of law. it is justice when it fits the crime, yet there are no living criminals from the era you claim the injustice from, further, there are no longer any living victims from that era as well.
so any reparations you seek can only be described as REVENGE for an injustice done to someone else. over one hundred years ago.

you still have not addressed my question, how will you separate out the white people who are the descendants of slave owners from the white people who came to this country after the abolition of slavery?

or are white people guilty just because they are white?

The corporations, banks, insurance companies and clothing retail stores, not to mention America as a super power who got rich and powerful off slave labor and our destruction are still around.

Reparations has a deeper meaning than the cheap definition and implication you give it.

    Word Origin & History

    reparation

late 14c., "reconciliation," from L.L. reparationem (nom. reparatio ) "act of repairing, restoration," from L. reparatus , pp. of reparare "restore" (see repair (1)). Meaning "act of repairing or mending" is attested from c.1400. Reparations "compensation for war damaged owed by the aggressor" is attested from 1921, from Fr. réparations (1919).

We need to be restored spiritually, economically, mentally, and socially. We are in need of repair. It will happen with or without the help of those who benefitted from our misery. Reparations are not so much needed for the benefit of blacks but for the benefit of whites because it is justice. Do you actually think that God will not bring justice down on America for her evils done to the Black man and Woman and Native Americans? No Justice, NO peace.

"Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever.” - Thomas Jefferson

no man comes to god, except through me.
sounds very much like god is going to judge us all as individuals.
so, as I had no dealings, either in this life, or any ancestors lives, then I can have a clean conscience on this subject when i finally meet my judgement.
also understand, America did not become rich off of slave labor. even at the time when slavery was prevalent in America, the rest of the world (europe) saw us as no more than a third world nation. America did NOT become rich until AFTER WW1.
if you wish to be fulfilled economically socially and mentally, get an education, get a job, and bust your ass as hard as I do.

please come up with more rationalizing of why all white men are guilty.
because all you have said to me so far, summed up, is I am to be pitied because i have an ancestor who was a slave to white men.

I REFUSE to pity anyone who is in a condition to take care of themselves.

Your white leaders are doing you an injustice by not giving us justice. All white people are the beneficiaries of the oppression, enslavement and exploitation of the black and indigenous people. Just like OJ was found innocent of killing his ex-wife and Ronald Goldman yet was held responsible in the civil suit. Whites of today are innocent of slavery but they are responsible to right the wrong since they are enjoying the fruits of what happened in the past on stolen land. Since the tighty righty whitey's like to espouse to black people and liberals the virtues of personal responsibilty, they need to start taking their own advice. But of course hypocrisy is a consistent characteristic of the Right Wing Nutballs.
