If the date coincided with todays dates and spoken of exact dates in the bible then I would go for it.Back then their calandars were different.

You're right. It's a pretty tricky deal. Ascension is always 40 days after Easter, which places it on a Thursday, since Easter was a Sunday. Jesus ascended to heaven 40 days after he rose from the dead.
The date of Easter is tied up with the date of Passover in Judaism, because that's when Jesus was crucified.
So since Passover moves around with those old calendars (and there were several conflicting ones!) Easter and therefore Ascension Day move around. God bless your every day, not just Ascension Day.

Hot dang you nailed it.If I am told to shower someone with gifts and thing unless the bible tells me to do so then why can i not sow affection, gratitude and friendship any day of the year? Why do I have to wait until Christmas day(manmade holiday)to give a gift?If they truely believe that christmas is Christs Birthday, then why go to a birthday party bearing gifts for someone human rather than the birthday man?I dont believe Christ wants material gifts,He want us :):):).
  • theprot... Darwin 2011/06/02 20:08:17
    theprothinker
You're right. The Bible never, ever told anyone to celebrate Christmas, much less giving gifts to somebody. In fact, Christ's mandates on how to treat one another (affection, gratitude, and friendship) NEVER expire and are to be practiced every day possible. The celebrations of Christmas, Easter, etc., are gifts FOR US in which we attempt to live our lives in the context of the life and work of Jesus, and for us to glorify Him in worship. In this, we cannot be constrained!

Very well put. When I want to give a gift I will not wait for a "special occasian".when I want to give thanks for Jesus Ill do it every day and do what I can to celebrate his existance.Altough its pretty tough now-days.

Always celebrate His existence and be thankful for your life and all the good things and bad - we definitely learn from both. God bless my friend.

I think there probably is a God. I'm not basing it on anything rational. It's just a gut feeling. But, I really don't speculate much beyond that.

In The Netherlands Ascension Day is legally considered to be equivalent to a Sunday

    What do people do?
Some devote Christians make a special effort to attend a church service on Ascension Day.
For others it is just a day off work to enjoy an early morning walk, or cycle ride in the spring weather, or carry out household maintenance.

    Public life
and many people do not have to work. Post offices, banks and many businesses and stores are closed.
Some stores, particularly in stations, airports and areas that attract a lot of tourists, are open. Public transport services run a reduced service and there may be no services in rural areas.

    Tradition:
On Ascension Day, people went out into the fields just before sunrise.
They then walked or danced barefoot in the dew (dauwtrappen).
On this day, the dew was supposed to have special healing and purifying properties.
Now, particularly in the northern and eastern of the Netherlands, some people go out early to walk or cycle in the natural surroundings.
For Roman Catholics it is often the day children celebrate their First Holy Communion.

Can't look at the video because it can't be played:

Interesting, thanks. In Germany they always celebrate "Father's Day" on Ascension Day, either killing two birds with one stone or an attempt to minimize the celebration of the religious observance. Sadly, in Germany, "Father's Day" is a day when many of the dads get good and drunk. Doesn't say much for the joys or opportunities of Fatherhood!
