Thousands of surgeries may be cut in Metro Vancouver due to government underfunding, leaked paper

- VANCOUVER — Vancouver patients needing neurosurgery, treatment for vascular diseases and other medically necessary procedures can expect to wait longer for care, NDP health critic Adrian Dix said Monday.

Dix said a Vancouver Coastal Health Authority document shows it is considering chopping more than 6,000 surgeries in an effort to make up for a... Read full article »

I'm not surprised at all it's just the same in Britain. Americans have no idea what it's like to be diagnosed with cancer and then be put on a waiting list for 6 months to begin treatment.
Medicare is in deep financial trouble we are told so how would another government run health system be able to make it?

With Canada's low GDP comparatively its no surprise they don't have the capital for their government to fund this system so well. With a more stable budget and less wasteful spending on wars we shouldn't have been a part of, we could have easily funded health care for all Americans except for those of you who fear death panels, you guys can keep your private option.

The saddest part of this article is even with these cuts, their system is still working better then ours. We have so much higher costs for what, so we can have a lower life expectancy (Can: 78 for men, 83 for women; US: 74 for men, 80 for women)? Also the rising health care cost are the number one cause of bankruptcy. The number one cause of bankruptcy in Canada is joblessness, which is saying something since they have lower unemployment then America (7.8% compared to about 10% in the US).

Topgun what is the average age of the American soldier, that is factored into our life expectancy, what is the average age of people killed in our streets by violent crimes, copmare that to other countries. That is what the proponents of Socialized Health Insurance doesn't point out. If the government takes over part of the Health Insurance in addition to what they already have their aim is to do away with the private sector. Listen to Obama that is what he wants. One payer system.

You make a good point but with the higher standard of living in America and the higher percentage of GDP being spent toward health care, you would think life expectancy despite your observations would tip in the favor of the United States.

Neither system [Canada or the US] is perfect but that doesnt mean we can't seriously improve ours.

I agree, I just don't believe that a government take over is the answer, regulate it, yes absulutely, run it, that would be the biggest mistake the people of the US would ever allow the government to do.

Canada's system is better in some aspects, and America's system is better then others. It would be foolish to adopt their system but not foolish to learn something from it.

definately and there's always room for improvement, our health insurance and health care systems both can be greatly improved, that's for sure and it is badly needed or we wouldn't be in the mess we're and chewing each others heads off and it will still not ever be perfect

America's health care delivers thousands of premature and low birth weight babies that would never have lived under socialized health care. When these babies die at 2 days or 2 hours old, the average life expectancy drops. Or we could do like Cuba and simply not count any child that does not live five years in calculating average life expectancy. Your figures make America look bad, as long as no one asks how the numbers were arrived at and what factors other than government control of health care affect those numbers.

I was comparing our health care to Canada not Cuba but ok. America does deliver a lot of premature babies, you say they would never live under socialized health care? That's odd since industrialized nations with socialized health care have lower infant mortality rates, which mean less are dying at young ages so more babies are living. The main causes of infant mortality, other then major birth defects, are prematurity and low birth-weight.

That's a geat article, thank you for sharing it. I'm thinking before readin the article of two things, when i readi it was like BAM!

We are constantly trying to manipulate nature if some people men and women both are not meant to have chilren naturally why not adopt? Instead we try to circumvent the natural order of things with firtility clinics. I was glad to see that in the article the other, I'll paste below is again man in it's mind treying to upset the natural order of things. Science is all mighty, don't worry if baby is a primie thay do wonders now a days and here it is:

"The authors say many pregnant mothers live under the illusion that a pre-term birth is no big deal. They believe modern medicine will sort everything out and their bouncing baby will thrive, even is he/she is born premature"

If we were switching to a single payer healthcare plan, then of course we may have something to be highly concerned about. But the inference you are trying to draw from this article, clearly breaks down because we are not switching to single payer....Really it's a bunch of words that are explaining a problem that are not here in America, rather Vancouver...Therefore it is just a farce.

the good thing about using their own words against them is they can't refute it. This has been the plan all along. Liberals know Americans are vehemently opposed to government run healthcare, so they try to sneak it in the backdoor.

They've been trying to do that for over 40 years. Meantime they've been sneaking in pork and earmarks that have been bankrupting the country so has the GOP but Libs surely get the trophy
