This morning on public radio there was a discussion of the impact of "likeability" on peoples's vote. Does a candidate's "likeability" affect your vote?

Yes, I have to "like" the candidate to get my vote
No, I don't care- I just want someone who is competent

A recent Gallup poll reported that Americans find President Obama more likeable than Mitt Romney, but it remains to be seen whether a cheery disposition and sense of humor will carry the day in November. What makes a politician likeable? Can personality overcome other perceived deficits?

Not for me personally; but for many people its a factor.

Many people don't vote on the issues or a candidate's track record.

Instead, they base their decisions on their emotions.

Likeability plays a very small role for me.

The discussion mentioned Jimmy Carter, whom most people admired personally but who was a mess as President.

Unfortunately that seems how people vote - we now live in the "American Idol" present. People don't really care about what they can or can't do - just if they LIKE the person.

Where is all this "likeability", regarding Obama? I don't find him to be the least bit likeable.
I think people confuse his "cunning" and "guile" with "likeability. I have absolutely no use for someone who wishes to transform America into his version of "fairness" which involves doubling the size, scope and coerciveness of our central government, and in the process will likely bankrupt the nation.

It's not supposed to be a popularity contest. If a candidate running has talking points that I agree with, that aren't too one sided then I will choose them based on that. "likeability" is just IMO a way for people to be lazy and not research what the candidate actually stands for.

It's annoying that people treat elections of all levels like high school prom nominations

would you vote for someone who exhibited the background and qualities to perform the responsbilities of the office but whom you thought was arrogant?

I'm not sure. It depends on how his or her arrogance affected their ability to get the job they are elected for. Arrogant people don't usually get much work accomplished.

If they are going to continue with the popularity contest, can we make them duke it out MMA-style? Lol

I think it is going to have some affect. It is not a major contributor to my decision.
