Joe Paterno was a great man and great college football coach; hopelessly stuck in the past for the last 20 years - unwilling to move forward to the present time. His old world views and ways of handling things; combined with his stubbornness and incredible arrogance - contributed to his stunning and shocking; and in my opinion... criminal negligence - of children being repeatedly raped by his assistant coach, on campus, over decades. His casual explanation that he didn't want to interfere with anyone's weekend with such things as child rape - was despicable behavior by a supposed leader who preached success with honor. His firing was deserved and I suppose that knowledge - that his egregious behavior and failure to save children from evil...caused him to be fired in shame - was what killed him...may god have mercy on his soul...

Ultimately, it was lung cancer that killed him, but the stress of the Penn State incident only spread up the process. I don't know how long ago Paterno was diagnosed with the cancer, but he would have had to been a Stage III or IV when the scandel broke. May he now rest in peace.

Smoking cigarettes killed Joe. And, if you smoke them, they will likely kill you too, and your spouse and children also if you expose them to your second hand poisons in the
    form of smoke.

I think it only helped to speed up the quality time he had left with his love ones. I hope that time was spent well with the people who truely loved him, because that is all that is important in those final hours is close friends and family.

when you have a terminal disease ,, and it's progressive , any negative stimulus isnt good ...stress will help allow your bodies defences to weaken ,, depends how long he's been battling cancer and how it's progressed ,,, but stress will definately hurt you ....and help a disease ..

Logically, no. He had an very agressive form of cancer, and we really do not know when he found out about it. They said it was shortly after he was fired, but they also told us it was a "very treatable form" which is not true, certainly not for an 85 year old.

However, as far as I am concerned, I blame his death on specific people. Firstly, the university's former president, Graham Spanier, who has been working for years to have Paterno removed as head coach, while he hid the Jerry Sandusky incident from the University's Board; a true scumbag. Secondly, the university's former senior vice president for finance and business, Gary Schultz, who had the Sandusky incident put on his desk (as he WAS the administrator whose job it was to deal with it), and he did, nothing; a very questionable human being this man. Thirdly, the university's former assistant football coach, Jerry Sandusky, who with his lack of morals, ethics, and basic human decency has tarnished one of the greatest college football programs, that was built over decades by the hard work of many good, decent people. May he burn in Hell. Fourthly, I blame the university's Board of Directors, who should all be replaced immediately, with basic Penn State alumni, no CEOs, no powerful and influential people, just e...

May he burn in Hell. Fourthly, I blame the university's Board of Directors, who should all be replaced immediately, with basic Penn State alumni, no CEOs, no powerful and influential people, just everyday alumni who love Penn State. And finally, anyone who worked to have Joe Paterno removed as head coach, I blame them also. They have been busy for years. They got their wish, and they killed the a good, decent man while they were at it. Congratulations you vile filth!

When you are granted a treasure such as Joe Paterno, you do not act like The Pennsylvania State University did. It is an embarrassment, to the university, its alumni, and to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. How Jerry Sandusky was dealt with, and how Joe Paterno was treated suggests there is something rotten in the state of the Happy Valley. That must be changed.

God bless Joe Paterno for his years of commitment to his student athletes, who he instilled the value of education first, before athletics. God bless Joe Paterno for his commitment to Penn State, his name will always be synonymous with the university. May God welcome you to the great football field in the beyond Coach Paterno, we were blessed to have had you for so long. May God comfort the Paterno family during this difficult time, especially his wife, and children. Your husband, and father was a great man, and will be remembered as such.

Unwarranted stress on the body is never good but especially not good when you already have an illness.

I think that he was a decent guy (probably a great coach and mentor) who basically tried to ignore a horrible situation and it came back to bite him . . hard. The cancer and cancer treatments may be what's put on the death certificate, but everybody knows that the Sandusky case took the heart right out of him. This guy may have done a million good things in his life but will now be remembered for the one thing that he didn't do. Just imagine where he is now and what he's dealing with in the afterlife.

i really don't know because he had cancer but your frame of mind has a lot to do with how your body deals with disease so with the stress he was under it very well could have made a proud man like him give up on life.

I suspect it was the other way around, think about it what if the board of directors knew he had cancer and thought to themselves this is the opportune time to clear their contentious and go public after all Joe Pa wasn't going to live much longer anyways better let him take the heat for it. Of corse none of this can be proven so take this with a grain of salt, I wouldn't want to be responsible for the latest crack pot conspiracy theory circulating through people's emails. So if you think different it's ok.
