I must say after I was injured I was put on Paxil for depression and All I wanted to do was sleep until noon. I have always been an early riser. I threw them away they tried me on two more things and I threw them away. I have seen some things work for people and it helped them.
But I do feel all doctors are very quick to write out prescriptions.
I strongly feel that a lot of peoples problems is processed food and society.

the VA gives them out like candy, and the suicide rates with solders keeps going up. there are better meds but law enforcement doesn't like them. the problem is going to get worse until people speak up for the better care of our Vets.

I've wrestled with depression for most of ,my life. Last summer, I hit the end of my rope and finally asked my doctor to let me try antidepressants, so she put me on Celexa. I swear by it! I don't feel drugged at all, and I don't spend my days crying anymore. She wants me to think about weaning off of it, but I don't want to!!

You need to spend more time being thankful for what you have instead of being depressed about what you don't have.

Look, I think you mean well. But, many people are persistently depressed because of a chemical imbalance in the brain. So that kind of advice will not solve the problem. Medication is a must in those situations.

It isn't about what I have or don't have. Depression runs in my family - my mother, her mother and grandmother all suffered with it. I'm very thankful for what I have, thank you. And even more thankful that I can now enjoy it.

So long as people in this country continue to believe that "pills are magic" and will solve all of your problems....people will take them.

People kill 42,000 people a year on our highways every year....and we do little or nothing about that....

Thought you might get a kick out of this: My daughter has a young stud horse that jumped the fence and cut its leg; I took her to the vet to pick up some stuff to treat it and the vet told her they have an Anti Psychotic Medication to stop it from jumping the fence. Unbelievable. Fortunately , my daughter was raised on information regarding medications and she just laughed and told them No Thanks.

I don't take pharmaceuticals. Doctors are drug dealers with Licenses. They kill more people each year than street drugs.

This is probably because about 80% of antidepressant-related deaths are due to suicide and not substance misuse (the data collected by np-SAD).

Wanna feel better take a pill, wanna sleep take a pill, wanna lose weight take a pill. Even though some medication is essential some is a quick way for Doc to move you through the office when the diagnosis is hard to make and for the drug companies to ring the big bell on Wall Street.

I've been there. Doctor gave me pills to sleep and now it has been about 6 months and no pills and I am finally starting to sleep on my own without pills. Some pills are more trouble that they are worth. I hated being a 'legal' addict and held hostage to my doctor for a refill.

Yea if you have a doctor that will refill the scrip without having to "see you" and ring up yet another office call on the HMO. My ex went in to the doctor around the time most women go through the pause after many many different scrips some of which would turn her from being Mike Tyson like aggressive to just having a 1,000 yrd stare I would have to call it a total missed diagnosis. After much prodding she went to another doctor who took her off all the crap which became an issue in itself and prescribed a couple of hormonal supplements and she moved through it with no other problems. So yea I understand completely one of her meds was also for sleep, she would sleep daily for at least 12 hours and some mights as much as 14 to 16 hours kind of hard to maintain an average adult schedule when you have the sleep habits of a cat.

Yeah, If I sleep that much nothing 'ever' gets done. Now I am getting about 8 hours in a 9 to 10 hour bed session and getting up ready to go with no funny chemicals in my system. Much better.

Serious exercise works too. That's why my profile pic is with my bicycle. 2 to 10 hour rides and I can get too tired to need pills.

I think some people assume that a pill will fix them so they run to the doctor real quick and ask for that quickie solution. Too bad its all b/s and some things can be fixed with a sometimes painful (foods people do not want to eat) cheaper sloution is out there. Doctors have come to assume people want that rather than trying to discuss what will happen to their patients after they start taking them.

Meds are powerful, we have a pills will fix it society. Three is a need for meds for some people and some issues, but we over use them. Do I want a federal ban on them no, we the people need to get smart.

Anything can be "spun" to fit an agenda....

I must say it is sad and surprising to see so many conservatives on this thread who would take away someone's choice in deciding if they need these medications.

There are huge lists of possible side effects. The public is in fact informed just from watching commercials.

I submit to you all....and I could back it up with facts were I so inclined.....that thousands and THOUSANDS of people would be dead or in a mental hospital padded room without some of these meds.

I agree with you, some need the meds and some are life saving for sure. But when I go to the doctor because I don't feel well and they tell me I got the blues and want to give me a pill that takes 2 weeks to get in my system? Not to mention all the side effects that they don't know about right away, such as all he heart problems associated with some medications that weren't found out about until years and years later. I just told them "no thanks" and never went back to them. It's just so awful how they boost up the meds... Come on now, a pill that will make you eye lashes grow? Geeze They made them stop cigarette commercials and the beer industry can't sponsor sporting events anymore. I say take the medications commercials off the air. I for one am sick and tired of seeing them. I know, I'm rambling... I'll stop now.
