The United States Preamble- A Brief Study

The Constitution of The United States of America is a simplistic document by design. I hope to do a study of each section or article in a series. I want to start with the Preamble of the Constitution and move forward. Each with it's own Hub. If this has been done before I apologize but my take on things might differ and the more ideas that are out there, the better.

The Preamble- We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

This opening statement is so powerful that to merely skip over it for the "meat" of the document is to disregard the opening ceremonies of every major event in a life. It is to forget the birth of a child, the anniversary of a marriage or the discovery of the continent in the historical context of an American life. While conception of this document was labored over in the Declaration Of Independence and later Articles of Confederation, its birth and that of the nation started...

    We use 17 pages presently for a Constitution and the idiots on the Hill write bills that are thousands of pages? Go figure.

    No need to apologize for re-doing this. A lot of people have not read this document and most of those who have read it don't understand it. This includes Congress and other government officials.

    When enough people understand the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, we will have a more educated citizenry and better elected officials.

    Originally, the Preamble began, "We the States ... "
    The Founders in their wisdom changed it.

    Yes they did, a great point to bring up. All power originates with the people, but the people had already established independent governments in the states which is why they were represented in the Senate and the people in the larger House of Representatives.

    Good post - good educational material. Unfortunately, very few people nowadays really take the time or care about "the founding of our country" and what "stress and strain" the founders must have been under to do the "incredible". The amount of time, money, lives and "honour" (old English spelling) these people expended is astounding.

    Fortunately, I think "middle America" (at least a portion of it) is FINALLY "waking up"~~!! The "road we are on" can only lead to destruction.~~!!

    The most important part is the first few words. WE THE PEOPLE. And now its We the Government. And of course we are expected to go along with what they think is going to be for WE THE PEOPLE.

    I've recently heard, and read, that reading the Preamble, in proper english, it stipulates a security (commercially bondable document), for the debt of the Revolutionary war, and the articles of the Constitution are the terms of the bankruptcy of the republic.

    it is interesting to note the preamble and view it as a missions statement of an organization and the constitution as the policies and procedures for that organization. The words were chosen carefully in this preface for good reason and to of he most striking are provide for the common defense. Provide means to procure supplies or means in advance; to take measures beforehand in view of an expected or a possible future need, especially a danger or an evil. So we are to procure supplies in advance and take measure beforehand for our common defense. Another definition is to make ready for future use or prepare. Promote, is used for the the general welfare. Not the word provide. Jefferson chooses these two different words for different reasons. Promote means to contribute to the prosperity of or to aid it does not mean provide. Nor are they synonyms. Further, in looking at the definition of welfare as applied to a state and not a person, from the 1828 version of Webster's we see it means the enjoyment of peace and prosperity, or the ordinary blessings of society and civil government.
    Words for the preamble were chosen carefully and ordered accordingly to emphasize what the government was to do an what it was not to do. This should be a greta discussion
